Chapter 25 • New year
Dimitri, wise after his earlier adventure with Phrossou, was careful to limit the danger of his mixed feelings for her and her more straightforward ones for him. He made plans. On Monday, he would go to the cinema with Ahmet to see the new film, Rebel without a Cause, with James Dean and Natalie Wood. On Tuesday, with Kevork to play tennis at the Club if the weather was fine. On Wednesday, Pavlos was coming over to his house for a major game of chess, and on Thursday, he was going to take Laeta, who hadn’t bought her presents yet, out shopping. From Friday to Sunday, he had decided to give Phrossou time off to go to her village. He felt perfectly capable of managing on his own - and above all, he felt safer.
