Chapter 1 - Alina's POV
When I was little I used to be curious about the outside world, wondering what magical places and adventures I could find. My mother would always tell me stories about her travels from before she met my father, but she always left out the awful parts. My kind used to live farther down south on the coast of the Deep Forgotten Sea, the homeland of my kind. Then the demons came and wiped out everyone of my kind except for my ancestors, who escaped and have been living in hiding among humans ever since. We used to live in the city with humans until the demons showed up 10 years ago and not only destroyed the city, but also killed my mother. I was 7 then. My father took me up to this cottage by the ocean on the outskirts of the Marsh Wood Forest and we have been here ever since. We live off the land and sea, catching and growing everything we eat. Our home is a quaint home with pale colored walls, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. We never know if we will have to leave in an instant again, so having anything with sentimental value doesn't seem right. "Alina, where are you? It's time for dinner." my father shouts from the house, pulling me out of my thoughts. I don't even know why he bothers shouting, he knows I can hear him from a mile away. One of the many perks of my kind. "Stop shouting, dad. I'll be right down." I shouted back, as I jumped down and swung down the branches of the gigantic oak tree by our house till I reached the ground. Once I reach the ground, I skip over to him and give him a hug. My dad is human and my mom was a shifter. My dad, Rick, is 46, 5"5", with brown hair, hazel eyes, beige skin, and has a stockish build with thick arms and legs. As for me, I literally look like a copy of my mom, being 5"7" with jet black hair, storm grey eyes, beige skin, skinny figure with an ass and boobs to die for, and, of course-being a Gonakadet Shifter. Unlike other shifter species, gonakadet shifters are born with two spirit animals, one water spirit and one land spirit, and have their first shift at the of two. Our water spirit is an orca and our land spirit is a wolf. We can find our mates anytime after we turn 15 and age slowly. My mom used to tell me how our homeland, the Deep Forgotten Sea, was the source of the balance of the world and our people were charged with tending to the source of magic in the world to keep the balance. Going inside our cottage, I see dad making sandwiches again for dinner, while I prefer to have a cooked meal. Dad's cooking is the equivalent of a health hazard. Last time he tried cooking, he made burned squid with peanut butter and rice sauce. Yuck. Even the animals wouldn't touch it. While eating, dad starts discussing what we need to do to prepare for the winter that's coming. Winters in 4 months and I am looking forward to frolicking around in the snow in wolf form and swimming in the glittering icy ocean in my orca form. My only worry during winter is for my father. He's getting old and winters are hard for him, but that dosen't stop him from trying to make me laugh and embaress me even if theres no one else around to see. Two winters ago he almost froze to death, so now I only go outside for food, since I can keep myself warm, one of the many perks of being a shifter. "Dinner was good, thank you." I said as I got up and took our plates to the sink. While rinsing off the dishes, I say "I'll be going into the forest to run, I'll be back in a few hours." Dads gives me a stern grin and runs his hands through his hair as he says "Becareful and try not to be gone too long." "Yes dad, see you later." I told him in a goofy voice, as I ran out the door and immediately shifted into my wolf once outside the door. Another perk to being a gonakadet shifter is that we don't need to remove our clothes when shifting as they don't shred when we shift, which comes in handy. Tonight is beautiful, the full moon's light shining bright and lighting up the night, the crisp cool air against my fur. My wolf Liliac is deep dark midnight glossy blue fur that shimmers and glitters and has storm grey eyes just like mine. She is protective, stubborn and fierce. My orca's name is Shelly and she's huge with black and white coloring. Shelly is caring, humble, and affectionate. Both of them are my best and only friends, besides my dad. I honestly feel sorry for my mate when they meet me as I am sure they will have their hands full. While Liliac is having fun frolicking throughout the forest, me and Shelly sit back and chat. All of a sudden, something has caught Liliac's attention. "What's wrong, Liliac??" Shelly asks her. "Someone's here and I smell blood." she replied cautiously. Liliac has a better sense of smell than us and someone being in her range and catching her attention isn't a good thing. "Is it a demon?" I asked her nervously. The closest living settlement is the Green Wood Werewolf Pack, then the Glide Wing Dragon Clan, and then some human settlements, but all are over 60 miles away. No one ever comes this far north, so why would someone be here now? "No, smells like another wolf and lots of blood and the other I am not sure. Whoever they are, they are either wounded and dying or covered in blood and could be dangerous. Either way, we need to check them out in case they pose a threat." Liliac replies. "Agreed, but we need to be careful. We don't know who these people are, so keep your distance, Liliac." Shelly tells her worriedly, as Liliac runs towards the north.
