Chapter 1: The Girl the Moon Goddess Forgot
Chapter 1: The Girl the Moon Goddess Forgot Lyra's POV (Part 1) The morning of my eighteenth birthday arrived with the soft golden rays of the rising sun spilling through my bedroom window. Birds chirped outside, their cheerful songs blending with the rustling leaves of the ancient oak trees surrounding our cottage. Most people would have smiled at such a peaceful morning. I did. After all, this was the day I had been waiting for my entire life. Every werewolf counted down the years until their eighteenth birthday. It was more than a celebration of becoming an adult. It was the day our wolves awakened, the day we finally heard the voice of the other half of our soul, and the day the Moon Goddess revealed the mate destined to walk beside us for the rest of our lives. No werewolf ever forgot that day. I certainly wouldn't. Excitement fluttered in my stomach as I threw my blanket aside and rushed to the window. From there, I could see the heart of the Crescent Moon Pack already bustling with activity. Warriors decorated the main square with silver banners embroidered with the crescent moon—the sacred symbol of our pack. Women arranged long wooden tables for the evening feast while children chased one another through the streets, laughing without a care in the world. The Awakening Ceremony was more than a tradition. It was the most sacred event in every werewolf's life. I rested my forehead against the cool glass and whispered a silent prayer. "Moon Goddess... please let today be everything I've dreamed of." A knock sounded on my bedroom door before it opened. "There you are," my mother said with a gentle smile. "Happy birthday, sweetheart." She walked over and wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her tightly. "Thank you, Mom." She pulled away just enough to cup my face. "You've grown into such a beautiful young woman." I laughed softly. "You always say that." "Because it's true." For a brief moment, something flickered across her face. Worry. It disappeared so quickly that I almost thought I had imagined it. "Come downstairs," she said. "Your father has been waiting to wish his little girl a happy birthday." "I'm coming." After washing up, I slipped into a simple cream-colored dress my mother had sewn for me herself. It wasn't as elegant as the expensive gowns worn by daughters of high-ranking pack members, but I loved it. My parents had worked hard to make this day special. That mattered more than fancy clothes. The smell of freshly baked bread, honey, and roasted sausages filled the kitchen. My father looked up from the table and smiled. "There she is." He stood and opened his arms. "Happy birthday, Princess." I laughed and hugged him. "I'm too old to be called Princess." "You'll always be my little princess." I rolled my eyes playfully. My parents weren't nobles. They weren't rich. My father served as one of the pack's hunters, while my mother worked in the healer's garden, growing medicinal herbs. We lived a simple life. But it was filled with love. As we sat down for breakfast, my father studied me carefully. "Nervous?" "A little." He chuckled. "I'd be worried if you weren't." My mother reached across the table and gently squeezed my hand. "No matter what happens tonight..." She paused. "...remember that nothing can ever change how much we love you." I blinked. "Why does everyone keep saying things like that?" She forced a smile. "I suppose I'm just being emotional." Before I could ask another question, the front door burst open. "Lyra!" I laughed before even turning around. Only one person entered our house as if she owned it. Ella. She hurried across the room, her golden curls bouncing wildly. Without warning, she threw her arms around me. "Happy birthday!" "Thank you." She pulled back, grinning from ear to ear. "I barely slept last night." I laughed. "Why?" "Because tonight is Awakening Night." She clasped her hands dramatically. "What if my mate is tall?" "What if he's handsome?" "What if he's both?" I couldn't help laughing. "You've been planning your future husband since we were twelve." "And you haven't?" Heat crept into my cheeks. "I..." She gasped dramatically. "You have someone in mind!" "I don't." "Liar." "I'm not lying." She folded her arms. "Then why are you blushing?" I looked away. "It's nothing." She leaned closer until our faces were inches apart. "Raymond." I nearly choked on my drink. "Ella!" She burst into laughter. "I knew it!" I buried my face in my hands. "Please don't shout his name." "Why not?" "Someone might hear." She lowered her voice but continued smiling. "You've liked him forever." "I don't like him." "Oh?" "I just..." Words failed me. Raymond Ashford. The Alpha King's only son. The future Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. He was respected by the warriors, admired by the elders, and adored by nearly every unmated girl in the pack. Strong. Confident. Kind when he chose to be. Every time I saw him leading the younger warriors through training, I found myself watching a little longer than I should. Not because I expected anything. Only because dreaming was free. "I know it's impossible," I admitted quietly. "Ella, girls like me don't become Luna." Ella gently nudged my shoulder. "You don't know what the Moon Goddess has planned." I smiled faintly. "I guess we'll find out tonight." The rest of the morning passed quickly. After breakfast, I helped my mother prepare food for the celebration while Ella chattered endlessly about dresses, mates, and the ceremony. Everywhere I looked, people smiled with excitement. No one noticed the small knot of nervousness tightening in my chest. By afternoon, the entire village smelled of roasted meat, fresh bread, and sweet berry pies. Children played games beneath colorful banners while elders gathered beneath the ancient oak tree, sharing stories about the night they had met their own mates decades ago. Every story ended the same way. "When I looked into their eyes... I knew." I couldn't stop imagining what that moment would feel like. Would my heart recognize him before my mind did? Would my wolf call out to him? Would he smile at me the way my father smiled at my mother? Without realizing it, I touched the small silver moon pendant around my neck—a birthday gift from my parents when I turned sixteen. "Moon Goddess," I whispered, "please let me have someone who will love me." As the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains, the pack horn echoed through the village. The ceremony was about to begin
