It was late when my birthday dinner over, so I stayed at dad’s. I was just settling in for the night when my sisters came into my room and laid down on my bed with me.
“Do you think Wyatt will bring you something for your birthday?” Autumn asked me. Wyatt is a boy down the street, has had a huge crush on me, and every year, he would bring me my favorite flowers, sunflowers, with zinnias and lavender.
“God, I hope not,” I answered her. “He is like a lost puppy when I am around.”
“You don’t like him,” Arica said. I rolled my eyes at her.
“He’s alright, but he is not my type,” I told her. I yawned, and I was ready for bed. “We can talk in the morning before I leave.”
“We will be gone by the time you get up,” Autumn told me. “We have softball tournaments all day tomorrow.” My sisters have always loved playing softball, and they are the few top players in the state, Autumn as a shortstop, and Arica as a catcher. They have already received scholarships from all over the country, and they have already decided where to go.
“Well, give me hugs, and good luck tomorrow,” I told them both. They both hugged me, then leaving my room. I leaned back against the headboard and I sighed. I turned off my light, rolled over to stare at the moon’s reflection in the lake, and I fell asleep.
The next morning, dad was in the kitchen, drinking his coffee, and looking over some contracts. He is a lawyer here and town, and one of the best.
“Good morning, dad,” I smiled, kissing him on the cheek. I went over and got a glass of orange juice.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” dad said, smiling at me. “Do you want any breakfast?”
“A bagel will do,” I answered, placing one in the toaster. When it was done, I put on some strawberry jam Teresa got from the farmer’s market. I went and sat down next to dad, eating my breakfast.
“Are you ready to go home?” he asked me.
I got my stuff gathered up, including all the presents everyone gave me, and dad drove me back to mom’s. When we pulled up to the house, the whole place just felt chaotic. Dad and I looked at each other with concern, and we went into the house.
Mom was rushing around, gathering things for spells and potions. Dad grabbed mom by the arm, stopping her in her tracks. “Nora, what is going on?” he asked her.
“Noah, get home, NOW!” she ordered him. “I had a vision, and the outcome is not good. Go home, and you and Teresa get your house protected!”
“What did you see, Nora?” dad asked her with concern. He had fear in his eyes.
“They are back, and this time, they will attack you and Teresa if you don’t put up the protection spell.” Mom gave him some herbs and stones for the protection spell. “Summer, get your bag into the truck now! You need to go to Mountain Moon.”
“She can come….” Dad began, but mom interrupted him.
“If she goes back with you, Summer will be in danger. She is safer with the pack and Sienna’s coven.” Mom rushed off and into her herb room. Dad and I followed her, and there. She dug around her herbs and pulled out a couple of vials. Then she got into her stones and handed everything to dad.
“You know the protection spell! Do it when you get home or else you and your family will be in danger,” mom warned him.
“What did you see?” he asked.
“If I tell you, you will try to change the outcome. But it will not work. Go home, and put the protection spell up!” mom told him, shoving him out the door. I ran out behind dad, hugging him quickly before he got into his car.
“I will see you soon,” he told me, and got into his car, and drove down the driveway. After dad was out of my sight, I ran inside the house. Mom was rushing around, gathering her herbs and stones.
“Summer, pack what you can and put your bags into your truck. Then pull it to the end of the driveway and hide it the best you can.” She handed me an envelope. I opened it and it was full of cash. “Use the cash to get to Mountain Moon, and there is a letter to Tovi and Alpha Lykeon. Leave your cards here. I don’t want you to use them and get tracked to where you are going. Anything of yours that is witchcraft, pack that, too!”
“MOM! What is going on?” I yelled at her, making her stop her rushing.
“They are back, Summer,” she said, placing her hands on my face. “They are back, and they will take us again. You need to get away now!” I looked at her with surprise. I thought The Hunters were taken care of years ago.
Rushing to my room, I grabbed my bag under the bed, hiding the money inside. I pulled out another bag and packed it with more clothes and the presents I got from my dad. I took everything out and placing them in the back of my truck, covering them with a tarp. Then I took my truck to the end of the driveway, backing it into some brush. I pulled branches and bushes in front of it, hiding it well from anyone. There was cawing all around me, and the raven’s numbers were increasing in the sky. This is a bad omen.
Quickly, I ran back to the house, and mom was packing as much of her stuff as she can. She loaded her station wagon with all of her herbs, potions, and stones.
“Summer, I want you to listen. When night falls, I want you to go to our secret passageway, that would take you into the woods over there,” she told me, pointing behind me. I know the passage way comes out past the barn, under some bushes mom plants a few years ago. “When you get out, run as fast as you can to your truck, get in it, and go as fast as you can. Do not stop unless it’s for gas. Stay away if you hear any noise here. Do not come back for me! I will find you at Mountain Moon!”
“But I don’t want to….” I stammered, but mom interrupted me.
“No, if you stay, you will be in danger. They want the both of us,” she warned me.
I spent the rest of the afternoon helping mom, getting her stuff loaded up in her station wagon. We made a small dinner of veggie and mushroom soup and quickly ate. When darkness fell over us, mom lead me to the secret passageway in her herb room and removed part of the floor.
“Get in, and go straight to your truck,” she ordered me. “They will be here soon.”
Suddenly, there was a loud bang. They were trying to kick the door down.
“Go!” she hissed. “I will find you at Mountain Moon! Stay there when you get there!”
She pulled me into the passageway and covered the entrance. I heard a loud crash and footsteps thundering throughout the house.
