The Jade Phoenix's Samsara episode 1
Of the myriad realms beneath the heavens, none were as serene and eternal as the Nine Heavens of the Divine Realm. Here, amidst the swirling mists and celestial palaces, time flowed like a gentle stream, and the air hummed with ancient power. It was a place of order, rules, and profound loneliness.
The story begins not with a bang, but with a flicker of memory—a dream of agony and regret on the Bridge of Emptiness. A voice, heavy with finality, echoes: "Yingyuan, this is my first and last time standing on this Heavenly Gallows for you." The image of a dying agarwood ember, its light scattering into boundless dust, paints a picture of a love that ended in utter desolation. "If I knew it would end like this," the voice laments, "the lotus should never have bloomed."
Five Hundred Years Earlier
The scene shifts to a time of celebration. By the sacred Jade Pool, a marvel is revealed: the last descendants of an ancient bloodline, the Four-Leaf Lotus. Two lotuses, sprouted from the same root, sharing mystic power, are more potent than any panacea. Their blooming is such a significant omen that the Supreme Majesty himself hosts a grand festivity, inviting envoys from the Spirit, Demon, and Hades' Realms to witness it.
Yet, peace is fragile. The Demon Realm elder, Shuohua, sees the lotus not as a symbol of harmony but as a perfect gift for his king's upcoming birthday. Tension crackles in the air as Marshal Huode of the Divine Realm dismisses the Demon King as an unworthy "youngling." The confrontation escalates until the elder makes a move to seize the lotus for himself.
The crisis is averted by the majestic, unseen presence of Sovereign Lord Yingyuan. From the shadows of his solitude, he dispenses wisdom and justice without violence. He allows the elder to live, sending a message of the Divine Realm's unwavering commitment to the peace accord established after the War of Genesis. The other realms, cowed by his authority, reaffirm their loyalty.
As a testament to this newfound peace, the twin lotuses finally blossom, taking human form under the blessing of the Supreme Majesty. Yingyuan is given the honor of naming them.
· The older sister, refined and poised, is named Zhixi.
· The younger sister, with a simpler, visceral beauty, is named Yandan.
Five Hundred Years Later
The twins have grown into vastly different fairies. Zhixi is the prodigy—the youngest Vice Curator of the prestigious Magical Pavilion, an important official hailed by all. She is diligent, powerful, and carries the high hopes of the entire Divine Realm.
Yandan, however, is the opposite. She is a lowly immortal attendant who feeds the fish at Xuanxin Cliff for the amiable but lazy Celestial Deity Beiming. She has no interest in divine arts or ascension exams. Her greatest passions are reading mortal-world plays, writing stories, and dreaming of becoming the best author in the Six Realms. She is carefree, cheeky, and perfectly content to live in the shadow of her illustrious sister, whom she adores.
Their bond is their anchor. Zhixi, ever the responsible older sister, chides Yandan for her laziness, worried about the gossipers who bet on her failure. But her love is undeniable; she secretly collects beautiful "starry powders" from a grand Star-Catching Ceremony (which Yandan missed) to gift to her sister. Yandan, in turn, has a secret dream of her own: to win the upcoming Jade Pool Festivity with a show-stopping play and ask the Supreme Majesty to let her endure the mortal hardships on Zhixi's behalf, to protect her sister from the dangers of the trial.
Yandan's simple life is punctuated by a peculiar mystery. Every day, someone flips a divine tortoise on its back at Xuanxin Cliff. No one can catch the culprit. One day, Yandan sees a fleeting figure—a man with a familiar back—escaping the scene. Intrigued and annoyed, she makes it her mission to catch this "Tortoise-Flipping Man."
Her investigation leads her to a weiqi puzzle that has stumped Celestial Deity Beiming—the "Six Crown Puzzle" created by none other than Sovereign Lord Yingyuan. With a clever mind honed by strategy games, Yandan solves it instantly. Beiming, impressed, strikes a deal: she solves Yingyuan's daily puzzles for him, and in return, she gets perks like leaving work early to hunt for the tortoise-flipper.
Armed with a basic divine arts manual from a worried Zhixi, Yandan and her merman friend Luming set a trap. But the mysterious figure is cunning and evades them with ease, leaving only a taunting note: "Stupid." Enraged, Yandan vows to redouble her efforts.
Her life is further complicated by two new "fish" in her pond—the silver dragon Aoxuan and the green dragon Zhaolan, sent to the Divine Realm to benefit from its energy. After a mishap where the grumpy silver dragon bites her, Yandan rescues a peculiar, contemptuous-looking black fish he had knocked out. She scolds the fish, promising to "teach it how to be a decent human" one day, unaware of the irony in her words.
The Undercurrents
Beneath the surface of Yandan's comedic misadventures, the strict, hierarchical nature of the Divine Realm is clear. We meet Yingdeng, the current Curator of the Magical Pavilion, who achieved her position by reporting her predecessor, Sixuan, for the forbidden crime of romantic pursuits. She viciously looks down on Yandan and even mocks Zhixi, highlighting the political intrigue and harshness that exists even in paradise.
The legend of Sovereign Lord Yingyuan looms large. He is a recluse, a one-man army whose mere existence keeps the Demon Realm in check. He is a figure of immense power and mystery, so remote that most deities have only seen his back. Yandan, despite her flippant remark that she doesn't like "vile persons" who act all mighty, is secretly curious about the man who saved her life centuries ago.
The episode closes on Yandan, more determined than ever. She has a purpose: to write her play, to protect her sister, and to catch the elusive man who flips tortoises and occupies her thoughts. The agarwood ember of the opening dream has not yet begun to smoke, but the twin lotuses are in full bloom, their fates already intertwining with the solitary sovereign lord, setting the stage for a samsara of love, sacrifice, and heartbreak that will shake the very foundations of the Six Realms. The first dream of the agarwood has ended, but the immortal samsara has just begun.
