3. Motel Rooms in Las VegasOscar drove the Charger too fast through the motel parking lot. A neon vacancy sign flashed in front of the old, low-rise building. A procession of about a dozen ghost- and skeleton-costumed people danced among the parked cars under the two a.m. sky. Ed struggled to make out the colors of their costumes but they all seemed gray. “Careful. You’re going to hit them,” Ed said. “Who?” Oscar asked. The costumed dancers were gone. Oscar stopped the car by the little office and they piled out. An old man drank from a bottle labeled Rattle-Shake Chocolate Milk. “Two rooms, please,” Cat-Suited Woman said. “Two?” Oscar asked. “One for the boys? One for you two?” “No. One for us.
