Returning to the Scene of the Crime“The California border’s west and you’re taking me east,” Ed said. “I’m gonna run out of time.” “You know where we’re going yet?” Miss Sugar Skull asked. “You’re not listening to me, are you?” Ed said. They passed a sign for a rest stop and it dawned on Ed. “I’m not going there. No way,” he said. “Or what?” Miss Sugar Skull asked. “Nothing, forget it,” Ed said. He shifted his weight. Grabbed the wheel with his left hand, grabbed her hand with his right, fast, as if it held a prison shank coming for him. He pulled hard expecting to turn the car around. The wheel didn’t budge.
