I was born the Vance heiress, built my career under the name S.V., and spent years engaged to Julian Sterling. I thought endurance would earn his loyalty. Then the Vances brought Chloe home and handed her everything carrying my name. Tonight, Julian asks me to sign away my designs. When shattered glass cuts my arm, he covers Chloe and leaves me bleeding. Later, he locks me in a freezing cellar to teach me obedience. By the time he opens that door, I have chosen a separate road. He simply has not noticed yet.

Chapter 1 The Trust Fund I Reclaimed
The document stopped beside my hand on the mahogany table. One clause carried the whole demand: I, Seraphina Vance, would surrender every right and claim attached to the design identity S.V. My father cleared his throat and studied the papers. “It’s for the family, Sera. Chloe needs this. It will stabilize her position.” Julian sat across from me, one hand resting near the unsigned document. His cool gray eyes stayed on my face. He expected the tears and argument that would let him step in, lower his voice, and decide the outcome for me. I kept my hands in my lap until the room grew uncomfortable. I pushed another folder across the table. “This one is for me.” He opened it. The first document annulled our engagement. The second gave up my claim to the Vance inheritance. My father jerked forward. “What is this? Are you insane?” “There’s one condition. My mother left me a trust fund of twenty million dollars. It unlocks with your signature or when I marry.” I placed a card with the routing numbers on top of his proposal. “There won’t be a marriage. Sign the release and wire the full amount. Then I’ll sign your papers.” Julian read both documents again. Curiosity replaced the bored look he had worn when I came in. “You’ve been planning this.” I let my father’s lawyers answer for me. For ten minutes, they compared signatures, reread my mother’s trust, and made two calls from the far end of the room. My father repeated the question. Each answer was the same. Then my phone pinged with the wire transfer notification. The full amount had arrived. I used their pen and signed beneath the clause that stole my work. “I’m done with the Vance name.” I stood and looked at Julian. “And I’m done being your fiancée.” Neither man followed me out. I drove to Vance Tower instead of the airport. The family kept its private data center on sub-level three, behind a retina scanner and a palm print reader. Both still recognized me. For now, I had every clearance attached to the Vance name. Fans hummed behind rows of locked server racks. I connected an encrypted drive to the mainframe and opened the ghost protocol I had spent six months building. Once started, it would move my files and poison everything left behind. I had tested every stage except the final deletion on an isolated system. The anonymous Zurich server received my original CAD files, biometric signatures, and the records that proved S.V. belonged to me. On the local system, each transferred file was corrupted, overwritten with junk data, and placed in the permanent deletion queue. Anyone searching the Vance servers later would find filenames and useless strings. The progress bar climbed. *34%.* My first sketch, a clumsy bird brooch from when I was seven. *67%.* The diamond weave that had won my first anonymous award. *92%.* The Midnight Bloom necklace now hanging around Chloe’s neck. My hands shook from adrenaline and an empty stomach. I had eaten nothing all day. *99%.* The reinforced door slammed against the wall. Julian stood there with two security men. He crossed the room and looked from my drive to the progress bar. He ignored the code on the screen. An unauthorized drive in my hand told him enough. He tore the main power cable from the rack. The fans fell silent one row at a time, and emergency lights washed the room red. He caught my arm. His grip tightened, then eased when he noticed my hand shaking. “You skipped lunch again.” He sounded irritated by the fact. “Reckless.” The familiarity caught in my throat. Julian remembered the tremor I got when I skipped a meal. He could spot it in the dark and still help my family take the work that had kept me awake for years. For one second, his thumb rested over the pulse in my wrist as it had a hundred times before. Then he looked back at the dead servers. His fingers closed again. “This tantrum is over. You are my fiancée, and I am your curator. I will not have my collection embarrassing itself.” He glanced at the guards. “Take her.” The security men pinned my arms behind me and dragged me away from the rack. I twisted once to look at the dark progress screen, but Julian blocked my view. He put me in the back of his Rolls-Royce, then sat close enough that his knee pressed mine. The leather felt cold through my dress. “I will break that defiant spirit of yours, Seraphina. If I have to lock you away, I will.” The tires ground over the manor’s gravel drive. When the front door opened, Chloe was waiting in the entrance hall. She stood in the warm entrance hall and gave me a small, pitying smile. Midnight Bloom rested at her throat beneath the chandelier, polished and fitted as though she had owned it for years. Her fingers covered the hidden clasp I had engineered for the necklace.
