“A new agent?” Sage asked, her laptop placed on the coffee table in front of her as she sat on the living room couch, facing the two males on her laptop screen.
It was around 6 in the evening when the two agents finished their work hours in the station. As soon as they’d arrived, they mentioned the newly added agent in their case to the two boys. Confused and surprised, the first thing they did was conduct a video call between them, eager to tell the youngest about the shocking news.
“Uncle Brook said she’s from Gviere,” Daexoen said.
Styx nodded, “She’s from the aviation unit,” he told them, “Dad said she was relocated because of how the case took a more ‘drastic’ turn,” he added, air quoting the word drastic as if mocking the term.
Daexoen laughed at the other’s sarcasm, “Turns out we’re incompetent in this case,” he said, trying to joke around the harsh reason for a needed addition.
The two boys laughed it out, continuously throwing jokes and remarks to lighten themselves with the cruel and unforeseen reality of a new agent being included in the case. However, Sage quickly turned around, feeling as if there was someone in the room with her. The boys’ laughter and loud teasing are muffled as she tries to analyze the room. The boys on her screen were now long forgotten when she seemingly thought she saw a faint shadow on the kitchen floor, faintly visible from where she was at.
“Sage?” Daexoen suddenly called out, causing the female to look back at the two, “What’s wrong?” Daexoen added, now with a more serious and still expression.
“Sage, is there a problem?” Styx added, now as serious as Daexoen.
The youngest looked back at the shadow she thought was there, but it seemed there was nothing at all. She looks back at the two serious yet also worried males in front of her. Unfortunately, before she could open her mouth to answer, her phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the caller, confused as to why her aunt was calling her at 7 in the evening. She was sure that they wouldn’t be home or even driving home by midnight or so.
“Auntie?” She greeted the person on the other side of the phone. The two boys sat quiet, waiting for the youngest to finish her call.
“Sage,” her aunt greeted her, “I’m sorry but it looks like we won’t be home for sometime,” she told her niece, somewhat worried about leaving the young female alone.
“Oh, and Jansen?” She asked, looking at the two boys who were now focused on her.
“He’ll stay at his friend’s house for a period of time to finish their projects,” her aunt replied. “Sage, we might not be home for a couple of weeks.”
Sage went quiet at her aunt’s revelation. It wasn’t that she couldn’t handle herself on her own, it’s just that she hadn’t been alone that long after the incident. She just looked at the two males who were also returning the look. They grew a little worried at the youngest’s silence. However, they didn’t want to interfere with the phone call she was on.
“Would you be alright? Being there alone?” her aunt asked, feeling a bit guilty for leaving her niece. She didn’t expect to be gone this long, but their business needed them to be on site with one of their branches outside the country. It was a sudden decision. If they had known first hand they would have brought the youngest along.
Sage sighed, looking over once again at the two, “I’ll be fine alone, auntie,” she saw how the two males leaned in closer to their screen. Triggered by the sentence, the female said.
Not wanting to disturb the phone call the female had as well as having the female overhear their conversation, Daexoen quickly grabbed his phone, texting the other male about his own concerns.
Daexoen: Alone? Did I hear that right?
Styx: Yes. Would she be alone the entire night?
“I understand, auntie. You don’t need to worry.” They heard her saying, obviously attempting to end the conversation she was having. “I’ll see you soon. Take care, auntie. Tell uncle as well.”
As soon as the female ended the phone call she was bombarded with questions from the two worried males, “Alone? You’re alone?” Daexoen asked, his voice a bit higher than normal.
“You’re alone for the night? When are they going home? How about your cousin?” Styx continuously asked her as well.
Sage sighed at the two, “My aunt and uncle are both out of the country. My cousin is at his friend’s place doing a project.” she answered them, reaching out the bowl of fruit she was previously eating.
“And when will they be back?” Styx asked.
Sage shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know.”
The two rose from their seats, “You don’t know?!” The two exclaimed in unison.
The female looked at him shocked at their sudden outburst, “What’s wrong?” she asked, surprised at their weird reaction.
“So you mean to tell me that you’re alone for how many weeks?” Daeoxen asked, making the female nod mindlessly, “While this bullshit of a case is still going on?!” His tone suddenly raised, Sage jumped in shock, not expecting the sudden outburst of the male.
“Are you freaking kidding us, Sage?!” Styx also exclaimed.
The two instinctively stood up from their chairs, “Don’t leave the living room. Stay where you are.” Daexoen said, as he leaves the camera’s vision, followed by the disappearance of Styx.
Sage raised an eyebrow, “What? Why-”
Her sentence was caught off when she saw the doors of the two males' bedrooms open and the two bolted out running, forgetting the video call they were having.
Daexoen quickly ran down from his room, surprising his uncle who was with his cousin. Resting on their living room couch and watching a movie.
“Daexoen, what’s wrong? Where are you going this late at night?” His uncle asked, seeing the boy hurriedly wearing his shoes.
“Sage’s alone. I’m staying over there,” he quickly said, before bolting out the house door.
Before the agent could answer, the male ran out of the house, ignoring the calls of the two.
His uncle tried to catch up with him but to no avail. He just watched the vanishing figure of his nephew. Chuckling at his desperate arrival at the female’s house. He grins as he walks back inside the living room, greeted by his niece.
“He ran? Isn’t their house like two blocks from here?” she asked, noticing how the agent sat back on his usual seat. “He forgot you had a car, didn’t he?”
He laughed, “I guess he’ll have to realize that when he gets there,” he answered, focusing his attention back on the screen.
“And you’re not worried?” Vienna asked, “He's going to a girl’s house.”
The agent shook his head, grinning at the movie scene they were watching, “I passed by his room, heard him talking to the other two. I’m sure Styx is also on his way there as we speak.”
Vienna raised her eyebrow, “Then aren't you worried Sage will have two guys staying at her house alone?” She asked, causing the agent to laugh at her question.
“You’ve spent half a day with the three of them, haven't you?” he asked, gaining a nod from his niece. “Then you’ve seen how they treat each other. I doubt the two would do anything to her.”
Vienna looked back at the three closeness when they went with her to the academy just this morning. The two were practically caging the youngest from anyone that they passed by. And then a sudden memory popped up. The conversation she had with her cousin.
“Right, I doubt” she mumbled to herself, indulging in the movie they put on.
On the other hand, Agent Brook wasn’t wrong when he said Styx was practically running at the same speed Daexoen was at.
“Where are you going? Why are you in such a rush?” Agent Kleio asked, noticing the speed his son was at as he came down the stairs.
“I’m heading to Sage’s. Her family is out of the country,” he quickly said, before running out of the house.
“Wait Styx, I could–” he paused as the male had already gotten out of their door, “--drive you” he chuckled, grabbing his phone to call his partner.
“Hey, let me guess. Styx’s just ran out?” Agent Brook greeted, expecting the phone call from his partner.
He chuckled, “Daexoen too, huh.” He replied, earning a laugh from the others.
“As expected, let’s just meet them tomorrow morning.” Agent Brook answered.
“Sage’s alone huh. I guess it’s better for the two to be there.” Agent Kleio said, worried about the youngest’s safety.
Agent Brook nodded, although knowing Agent Kleio wouldn’t be able to see it, “Exactly. They’ll call if they need us.”
“I guess. I’ll end the call then. See you tomorrow.”
“See you.” he answered before ending the call.
Meanwhile, Sage continued to stare at the empty camera screen of the two males' bedroom. Confused at the sudden disappearance of the two, when suddenly loud continuous knocks were banging on her front door. Still shocked by everything that had just happened, she mindlessly went near the door. As she opened it, two exhausted bodies fell in front of her.
Their chests raised harder and their breaths grew heavy. Cold sweats and aching legs were then felt by the two boys lying on her cold floor.
“Styx? Daexoen?” She mindlessly called out to them, confused at their sudden appearance in front of her. “What are you doing here?” She asked them.
The two exhaustingly tried to kneel in front of her, trying their best to stand up, “You were alone” they tried to say in chorus, breath almost running out.
