Whispers in the Moonlight I
The carriage rocked on a rutted path while the wheels struggled overgrown weeds invading the deserted alley. Lily Harper grasped the ancient leather seat, her heart racing with exhilaration and dread. After weeks of constant travel, she had finally reached the gates of Eldoria, a far-off paradise buried in mystery and rumour. Lily exited the carriage at a squeaking stop into the cool evening breeze. Unlike her London lab, where the clinical environment is, she smelled exotic flowers and moist ground. Moonlight cast lengthy shadows like phantom figures on the spun and twisted wrought iron gates. Lily pushed the gates wide, feeling the ancient hinges groan in protest, chilling her spine. Eldoria was an odd community where the living were meant to be separated from the dead by a thin veil. The locals told stories of ghostly appearances and voices carried on the breeze. More fascinated than terrified, Lily, the eager botanist for the future, was. Lily slung her backpack over her shoulder and a notebook into the yard. Moonlight flowed into dappled patterns, dancing across the overgrown paths under the dense canopy of giant trees. As they opened in brilliant colours, the petals of exotic flowers shimmered with a fantastic luminosity. Lily started to see magic as she travelled more. From a symphony of whispers carried by the gentle breeze, the air pulsed with an ethereal force. She stopped before a delicate, light-strobing great bloom. She felt the smoothness of her palm and the stillness laughed wildly. Lily gasped, her wide eyes reflecting shock. Beside the bloom, a small child no older than six materialized, his body gleaming akin to moonlight over the sea. He laughed a little and had absolutely perfect eyes. "Hello," he said, sounding as distant bells do. "Do you like my floral arrangement?" Though alarmed, Lily felt strangely peaceful. Her whispery, almost clear voice remarked, "It's beautiful." Your name is? He chipped, "Toby," and his laughter floated over the treetops. He pointed to the dazzling blossom, "And this is Luna." She enjoys conversing with me. As Toby described the garden and its secrets, Lily was amazed. Though she had always been drawn to the remarkable and unfathomable, this was something she had never seen before. Actually, Eldoria was a lovely paradise where boundaries between several worlds were blurring. Lily was too focused on chatting to Toby to see the dark figure staring at the edge of the clearing. It moved with amazing grace, making the air quiet, high, and shrouded. Lily turned her head, and the man trailed into the mist with residual discomfort. Though slightly uncomfortable and curious, Lily followed the figure since her curiosity overtook her fear. She still shuddered as she turned to follow the mysterious man. Her name was spoken, and then her shoulder was grabbed coldly. Lily whirled about, her heart pounding in her chest. She was tall and commanding, silently strong with ageless knowledge. She had never seen a guy quite like the one before her. His evening-colored eyes seemed to pass straight through her soul. Time and experience moulded his features; his long black cloak hung like a shroud. Presenting himself as "Professor Alden Grey," his deep smirk broke across the calm of the grass. "Protective of Eldoria." Lily had wild ideas. This had to be the enigmatic Professor Grey, the hermit whose life has been dedicated to revealing the secrets of Eldoria she has investigated in old botanical archives. But the diaries had not equipped her for the man's commanding presence; he seemed to be the garden's ancient riddles. Lily faltered, "I... I didn't hear you approach," hardly audible above a whisper. He closed Professor Grey's mouth with a knowing smile. "Eldoria has a way of revealing her secrets just to those ready to listen," he said. It seems you have found a spot few mortals ever see." His eyes wide with surprise and mischief, he gestured at Toby, now fixed on Lily's skirts. "Not everyone can see small Toby," Professor Grey said. "He is a spirit bound to this garden by a forgotten memory". Lily opened her mouth and closed her throat. Though she had questions, hearing them confirmed made her shiver. She turned to Toby, his ghostly form gleaming in the moonlight, and felt sympathy flood her. Not a creation of hers, he was an actual human caught on this fantastic planet. "What did he lose?" Tensed in voice, Lily questioned. Professor Grey's expression turned austere. Reacting as though he possessed secret knowledge, he said, "That, my dear Lily, is a story for another time." Nevertheless, know that Eldoria is a realm where memories linger, spirits find comfort, and the line separating worlds is unclear. This is quite a beautiful place, even though it is rather dangerous. His keen eye kept locked on Lily. "You have a unique ability, Lily Harper," he stated in a seductive voice. The capacity to bridge the gap between life and death, also a sensitivity to the invisible." Eldoria was expecting your arrival. Lily's thoughts whirled about. She had always felt close to the natural world and sensitive to the delicate energy passing under its surface. This was unique, though. Could she really converse with spirits to reveal the secrets of this magical garden? Professor Grey seemed to read her thoughts. He said, "Come," stretching out to her. There was a lot of learning to do and not much time to lose. Lily Harper, you hold the key to exposing Eldoria's secrets.
