Chapter 1 Unhappy New Year
It was Friday night and Jasmine was just about to head out to the neighborhood NYE party. It was unusually warm for a Georgia night in December, which reminded her of home. She was from Florida, and it would be an understatement to say she was a little homesick. She left her coat on the chair, and headed into the living room where Michael was sitting waiting on her to get ready. “All done” Jasmine said as she emerged into the room doing a small spin. Just in time to see Michael end a phone call. “Who was that?” She wanted to know. They had been on rocky times since Michael got a promotion at the law firm and had spent less time at home. Erica, from the office he replied. Instantly Jasmine rolled her eyes. Erica did not like her and made it very clear the day that Jasmine moved from Florida to marry Michael. “Don’t start.” She’s just touching bass about the case. It’s been a hard couple of weeks and we need to nail down the details of the case. “Are your friends coming to the party?” Yes. Why? She asked. Without answering her question he turned to the door, but before leaving he looked over his shoulder. “ I have to go to the office and pick up some important documents I’ll meet you there . I’ll have the driver come take you to the party. Jasmine sighed. Really Michael? On New Years. You really can’t get them in the morning? No, and I wish you would stop being so clingy. I will come to the party after I pick up the documents. He didn’t even wait until he finished his sentence. Just picked up his phone and walked toward the door. By the way you look beautiful. A casual compliment before he walked out the door had been his way of saying sorry without actually saying the words. Great. Sh*t. now I’m all alone on New Years. This was not the life she was expecting when she agreed to marry the man she had secretly loved since she was twelve. Although in grade school he hadn’t paid her any mind either.
