Five years ago, Elara Vale did the unthinkable.

She erased herself from the memories of the man she loved.

Kael Draven was destined to become the most powerful Alpha in the northern territories. He was also becoming dangerously like his father, a ruthless ruler whose obsession with control had nearly destroyed his bloodline.

When Kael discovered a forbidden secret buried inside his family's history, he begged Elara to erase his memories of that night.

And of her.

She obeyed.

Then Kael publicly rejected her, and Elara disappeared from his kingdom.

Everyone believed the future Alpha had simply stopped loving her.

Only Elara knew the truth.

Five years later, Kael is no longer the young man she remembers. He is a feared Alpha who rules with absolute control, trusts almost no one, and has no memory of the woman who once knew every part of him.

Elara returns to his kingdom under a false name.

Wren Ashby.

She claims to be nothing more than a healer's apprentice.

She has one purpose: find out why people connected to the forbidden ritual are suddenly dying before someone discovers the secret she has spent five years protecting.

But the moment Kael sees her, something inside him reacts.

His mind doesn't know her.

His wolf does.

He is drawn to her presence, unsettled by her lies, and increasingly obsessed with the feeling that he has lost something important.

Then a dead man is pulled from the river with a wound identical to one Kael suffered five years ago.

A forbidden Draven security insignia is found beside the body.

And carved into the corpse are four terrifying words:

HE REMEMBERS NOTHING.

As more people connected to Kael's forgotten past begin dying, Wren is forced deeper into the Alpha's inner circle.

Kael begins investigating her.

She begins investigating him.

Neither realizes they are hunting the same secret.

Then Kael finds an old ring hidden among his possessions.

A ring he cannot remember receiving.

Wren recognizes it instantly.

It was the ring he gave her before everything was taken from him.

And when Kael touches her, fragments of a forgotten life begin breaking through.

A kiss beneath the moon.

A bloodstained ritual chamber.

His father's voice.

Elara crying.

And Kael himself whispering the words that changed both their lives:

"If I become him, don't let me remember."

The closer Kael gets to the truth, the more dangerous his own memories become.

Because the secret hidden inside the Draven bloodline is worse than either of them imagined.

Something in the Alpha bloodline grows stronger with prolonged stress and unchecked power. It can turn control into obsession, anger into violence, and fear into something far more dangerous.

Kael's father tried to contain it.

He failed.

Now Kael fears he has inherited it.

And Elara knows the one thing Kael doesn't:

She didn't simply erase his memories.

She knew there was a way to restore them.

She chose not to tell him.

When Kael finally discovers what she did, their fragile second chance shatters.

He doesn't hate her because she erased his memories.

He hates her because she made the decision for him.

Five years ago, she believed love meant protecting him from a truth he couldn't survive.

Now she must learn that love cannot be built on someone else's stolen choice.

But before Kael can decide whether he wants his memories back, he must survive a political war for his throne.

The man behind the cover-up is not trying to destroy him.

He believes he is saving the kingdom.

Rhett Cassian has spent five years hiding the truth because he knows what happens when an Alpha loses control. He has seen an entire village fall apart because its leader failed.

He will do anything to prevent history from repeating itself.

Even if it means sacrificing the people he swore to protect.

Even if it means forcing Kael to remember.

And when the truth about Kael's father finally comes to light, Kael discovers the most terrifying part of all:

He may not have erased his memories because he was afraid of becoming his father.

He may have erased them because he already knew exactly what he was capable of.

Now Kael must choose.

The throne or the truth.

Power or freedom.

The man he became or the man he once was.

And Elara must face the choice she has avoided for five years:

Does she still love Kael enough to let him remember everything, even if the truth makes him hate her?

Because this time, she cannot decide for him.

This time, Kael must choose.

And when he finally remembers her, he may discover that forgetting Elara was never the greatest loss.

Remembering her might be.

Chapter One: The Body in the River
POV: Elara The dead man surfaced before Elara had time to see Kael's face. One moment, she was standing at the riverbank with five years of carefully buried memories pressing against her ribs. The next, a pale hand broke through the black water. A guard shouted. The river rolled. Then the corpse turned slowly in the current, and Elara saw the wound beneath his jaw. Her breath stopped. She knew that wound. She had seen it five years ago. On Kael. "Don't touch him." The command came from behind her. Elara froze. She knew that voice. Five years had changed its depth, sharpened its authority, stripped away the warmth she remembered. But her body recognized it before her mind could protect her. Kael. She turned. He stood twenty feet away in a black Alpha's coat, surrounded by armed guards. For one terrible second, Elara forgot how to breathe. He was broader than she remembered. Harder. There was a faint scar cutting through his left eyebrow, and the boy she had once loved had disappeared beneath the controlled stillness of a man who commanded an entire kingdom. His eyes found hers. Gray. Cold. Searching. Nothing happened. No recognition. No shock. No whispered name. Nothing. Elara had spent five years imagining this moment. In some versions, Kael remembered everything the instant he saw her. In others, he hated her. She had never imagined this. A stranger's gaze. "Who are you?" Kael asked. The question struck harder than any rejection could have. Elara lowered her eyes before he could see what his voice had done to her. "Wren Ashby," she answered. The name came easily now. It had taken her months to build it. A false birthplace. A false family history. False papers. A respectable healer's training that contained enough truth to survive questions. One name had been removed. Elara Vale. She had buried it with everything else. Kael looked at her for another moment. "You're the healer?" "Yes." "You were called here?" "No." That caught his attention. Elara looked back toward the river. "I came because I heard someone had been found." Kael's jaw tightened. "Then you came at the wrong time." "Perhaps." His gaze narrowed. "Everyone else has been ordered away from the body." Elara glanced at the guards. "They're looking at the wrong wound." Silence fell. Kael stepped closer. Five years. She had imagined touching his face a thousand times. Now she could see the faint pulse beating in his throat. She hated herself for noticing. "What wound?" he asked. Elara pointed toward the corpse. "The one beneath the jaw." A guard crouched beside the body. "Alpha, it appears to be a bite." "It isn't." The words left Elara before she could stop them. Kael looked at her. "You're certain?" "Yes." "How?" Because I have seen it before. Because your blood was on my hands. Because five years ago you were lying on a stone floor with that same wound burning through your skin while you begged me to make you forget. Elara swallowed. "Because an animal tears." She crouched carefully near the riverbank. "A blade punctures. This was made with pressure." She pointed. "Look at the edges." The guard leaned closer. Kael said nothing. Elara forced herself to breathe. The wound was nearly identical. Not merely similar. Identical. A narrow crescent beneath the jaw, surrounded by darkened veins. The same mark had appeared on Kael five years ago. The same mark she had spent years trying not to remember. "Move aside." Kael's voice was quiet. The guards immediately obeyed. He crouched beside the corpse. Elara watched him examine the wound. His expression did not change. But then his nostrils flared. His eyes lifted. They locked onto hers. Something moved between them. Not a sound. Not wind. Something older. The river suddenly went silent. Elara felt heat crawl beneath her skin. Kael's pupils widened. His hand moved toward his chest. He looked almost confused. Then the moment broke. The river crashed against the rocks again. Kael straightened. "What was that?" Elara forced her face into neutrality. "I don't know." It was the first lie she told him. It would not be the last. Kael stared at her. Then his gaze dropped to her wrist. Elara realized too late that her sleeve had shifted. The old scar was visible. Three thin white lines. Kael's expression changed. "Where did you get that?" Elara pulled the sleeve down. "An accident." "When?" "Years ago." "How many?" She looked directly into his eyes. "Five." Something flickered across his face. Recognition? No. Pain. His hand went suddenly to his temple. "Alpha?" One of the guards stepped forward. Kael raised a hand. The guard stopped. Kael closed his eyes. For one terrifying second, Elara thought he was going to remember. She could almost see it happening. A forest. A younger Kael. His hand around hers. His mouth against her forehead. His voice promising that no matter what happened, he would find her. Then another image. Blood. Fire. A ritual circle. His terrified eyes. Elara, if I ever become him... Kael's eyes opened. The memory was gone. His breathing had changed. "Have I seen you before?" Elara's heart cracked quietly. "Perhaps." "That's not an answer." "It is the only one I can give you." He studied her. The Alpha in him rose visibly. The guards became tense. Even the river seemed to wait. Kael stepped closer until there was barely a foot between them. "People don't come to Draven territory without a reason." "I have one." "What is it?" Elara looked at the corpse. "Work." "That's not what I mean." She said nothing. Kael's eyes remained fixed on her. Then something strange happened. His wolf surfaced. Elara saw it in his face. His pupils sharpened. His breathing deepened. His entire body became unnaturally still. The wolf recognized something. She knew it. She had felt Kael's wolf against her skin before. Five years ago, that wolf had known her better than Kael himself. But Kael's expression remained blank. His wolf knew. His mind did not. The realization terrified her. Kael suddenly reached for her wrist. Elara flinched. His fingers closed around the place where her pulse beat. The instant his skin touched hers, pain exploded through both of them. Kael gasped. Elara did too. A flash tore through her mind. Kael laughing. His hands around her waist. A ring. A moonlit balcony. Then blood. His blood. Her hands trembling over his chest. His voice. Erase me. Elara ripped her wrist away. Kael stumbled backward. The guards immediately drew their weapons. "Stand down." Kael's command was harsh. The weapons lowered. But he was staring at Elara as if she had become something he could neither understand nor trust. "What did you do?" "Nothing." "You touched me." "You grabbed me." "Then why did I see—" He stopped. Elara's heart pounded. "What did you see?" Kael's face hardened. "Nothing." Another lie. He turned toward the corpse. "Search him." The guards obeyed. One found something beneath the dead man's coat. A small metal clasp. He handed it to Kael. Elara saw the insignia. Her blood turned cold. The Draven security crest. Old. Discontinued. Used only by the inner guard five years ago. Kael examined it. "Where did this come from?" "No idea," the guard said. Elara stared at the dead man's hand. There was something beneath his fingernail. Black thread. She crouched again. "Wait." Kael caught her arm. "Don't." She looked at his hand around her wrist. He released her immediately. Elara reached down with two fingers and removed the thread. It wasn't thread. It was a strip of black leather. Stamped into it was a symbol she knew better than her own reflection. A crescent crossed by three lines. The symbol of the old containment ritual. Her stomach dropped. Someone had found the survivors. Someone was killing them. Kael watched her face. "You know that symbol." Elara closed her fingers around the leather. "No." His eyes hardened. "You're lying." She looked at him. For one heartbeat, she saw the man she had loved. Then he disappeared behind the Alpha again. Kael stepped closer. "Tell me who you are." Elara could not answer. Because beneath the dead man's collar, another wound had opened as the body shifted. A narrow crescent. Three dark veins. Exactly like the mark she had once seen on Kael. Exactly like the wound that had appeared the night he begged her to erase his memories. And beneath it, carved into the dead man's skin, were four words. HE REMEMBERS NOTHING. Elara's blood ran cold. Kael leaned closer to read them. Then he looked at her. "Why," he asked softly, "does this have my name written all over it?"
