Heartbreak.
In a dense, enchanted forest, there lived a girl named Olivia. She was adopted by a kind, loving family who lived on the outskirts of a small town, far from the mysterious woods. Olivia was an extraordinary girl, though she never knew the full extent of her uniqueness. Raised among humans, she believed herself to be just another ordinary werewolf, like the rest of her adoptive family. She had no idea that her true origins were far more mysterious and powerful. As Olivia grew older, she caught the eye of many in the werewolf community, but it was the Alpha of her pack, a strong and proud wolf named Marcus, who marked her as his mate. Olivia and Marcus had known each other since they were children. Growing up in the same pack, they shared many of the same experiences, from learning how to shift for the first time to participating in their first hunts. Olivia had always admired Marcus for his strength and leadership skills, even as a young wolf. He was the son of the previous Alpha, and it was clear from a young age that he was destined to take over the pack. Olivia, on the other hand, had always been different. She was more reserved and quiet, preferring the company of nature to that of the more boisterous wolves in the pack. Though she was a skilled hunter and swift on her feet, she never exhibited the same raw power or aggression that other wolves did. In a pack that valued strength above all else, Olivia’s calm demeanor and introspective nature were often mistaken for weakness. Marcus, despite his early fondness for Olivia, began to distance himself as they grew older. The more he trained to become Alpha, the more he surrounded himself with wolves who mirrored the qualities he believed were essential in a leader—strength, dominance, and ruthlessness. Katrina, in particular, embodied these traits. She was fierce, bold, and had no qualms about asserting her dominance. To Marcus, she seemed like the perfect candidate for Luna, someone who could rule by his side and reinforce his authority over the pack. Despite his growing attraction to Katrina, Marcus couldn’t ignore the bond he felt with Olivia. He knew she was his mate, and for a time, he struggled with this knowledge. He couldn’t understand why the Moon Goddess would pair him with someone so different from what he believed a Luna should be. Olivia was kind-hearted, empathetic, and had a deep connection with the natural world, but Marcus saw these traits as vulnerabilities, not strengths. Katrina, sensing Marcus’s internal conflict, began to manipulate the situation. She would often speak ill of Olivia, subtly planting doubts in Marcus’s mind. “Olivia is sweet,” Katrina would say, her voice dripping with feigned concern, “but can she truly lead a pack? Can she stand up to our enemies, or will she crumble under the pressure?” Over time, these words began to take root in Marcus’s thoughts. As Marcus’s ascension to Alpha approached, the pressure on him to choose a Luna grew. The pack elders, who also valued strength and dominance, subtly pushed him toward Katrina. They saw her as a strong mate who could help solidify Marcus’s rule. Olivia, in their eyes, was simply not up to the task. They mistook her quiet strength for a lack of power, never suspecting that she was, in fact, far more powerful than they could ever imagine. The day Marcus decided to reject Olivia was overcast, with dark clouds gathering on the horizon, mirroring the storm brewing in his heart. He had spent days wrestling with his decision, torn between the mate bond that connected him to Olivia and the expectations placed upon him as the Alpha. He knew this conversation would break her heart, but he convinced himself it was necessary for the pack’s future. Olivia was tending to a small garden near the edge of the forest when Marcus approached. She looked up, smiling as she always did when she saw him, though there was a flicker of concern in her eyes. She could sense something was off, but she couldn’t have imagined what was coming. “Marcus, what’s wrong?” she asked, her voice soft with concern. She wiped the dirt from her hands and took a step towards him. Marcus’s heart clenched at the sight of her. How could he do this? But he steeled himself, reminding himself of what he believed was best for the pack. He couldn’t let his emotions dictate his decisions. “Olivia,” he began, his voice tight and controlled, “we need to talk.” Olivia’s smile faltered. She sensed the seriousness in his tone and felt a knot form in her stomach. “Of course,” she replied, trying to stay calm. “What is it?” He hesitated, looking away from her as if he couldn’t bear to meet her gaze. “I’ve been thinking a lot about our future… about the pack’s future.” Olivia felt a cold wave of anxiety wash over her. “Marcus, what are you saying?” Marcus finally met her eyes, and the pain in his expression was evident. “Olivia, you’re kind, and you’re good. You have a gentle heart, and you care deeply for everyone in the pack. But… I don’t think you’re strong enough to be my Luna.” The words hit Olivia like a physical blow. She stared at him, not comprehending at first. “What do you mean?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I need someone who can lead by my side, someone who the pack will respect and follow without question. Someone… stronger,” Marcus continued, his voice wavering slightly. “I’m sorry, Olivia, but I don’t think you’re that person.” Tears welled up in Olivia’s eyes as she struggled to process what he was saying. “But… we’re mates, Marcus. The Moon Goddess chose us to be together. Isn’t that enough?” Marcus looked away, his jaw clenched. “I’ve tried to convince myself that it is. I’ve tried to see you as the Luna this pack needs. But every time I look at you, I see someone who’s too gentle, too soft. The pack needs a leader who can be fierce, who can command respect through strength.” Olivia’s tears began to spill over, and she took a step back, shaking her head in disbelief. “So… you’re rejecting me? You’re rejecting our bond because you think I’m weak?” Marcus’s heart twisted in his chest. He hadn’t wanted it to come to this, but he couldn’t deny what he believed. “I’m sorry, Olivia. I, Marcus, reject you as my mate.” The formal rejection cut through the air like a knife. Olivia felt as if her world was crumbling around her. The bond that had connected them, that had always given her comfort and strength, suddenly felt like it was ripping apart, leaving a void in its wake. “How could you do this?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I’ve loved you my entire life… I thought you loved me too.” Marcus looked pained, but he didn’t relent. “I do care about you, Olivia. But this isn’t about love; it’s about what’s best for the pack.” Olivia’s heart ached with a pain she had never known. “You think Katrina is what’s best for the pack?” she asked, her voice laced with hurt and disbelief. Marcus flinched at the mention of Katrina’s name. “She’s strong, Olivia. She’s the kind of Luna the pack needs. This isn’t about her or you—it’s about the future of everyone we care about.” Olivia’s tears fell freely now, and she could no longer hold back her emotions. “You’re wrong, Marcus. Strength isn’t just about power or aggression. It’s about heart, and loyalty, and caring for those you lead. I would have stood by you through anything… but you’ve thrown it all away.” Marcus felt a pang of regret, but he forced himself to stay firm. “I’m sorry,” he said again, but the words felt hollow. “This is how it has to be.” Olivia looked at him, her eyes filled with pain and betrayal. “You’ll regret this, Marcus,” she said, her voice trembling. “One day, you’ll realize what you’ve lost.” With that, she turned and ran, her tears blurring the world around her. Marcus watched her go, his heart heavy with guilt and doubt, but he didn’t call out to her. He told himself this was the right decision, that he was doing what was best for the pack. But deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life. As Olivia fled from the garden where Marcus had shattered her heart, her tears blurring her vision, she barely noticed where she was going. All she wanted was to escape the pain, the unbearable weight of rejection that pressed down on her chest. She was so consumed by her anguish that she didn’t hear the footsteps approaching until it was too late. “Olivia, dear,” a voice called out, dripping with mock concern. Olivia froze, recognizing the voice immediately. She wiped her tears quickly, trying to compose herself, but when she turned around, she was met with the smug, satisfied gaze of Katrina. Katrina stood there, arms crossed, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. She was radiant, as always, with her fiery red hair and piercing green eyes that now glimmered with malice. “What’s wrong, Olivia? Did Marcus finally see reason?” Olivia’s breath hitched as she realized that Katrina must have known this was coming, perhaps even encouraged it. “Katrina… please, just leave me alone,” Olivia managed to say, her voice thick with emotion. She tried to move past her, but Katrina blocked her path. “Why should I?” Katrina taunted, her smirk widening. “You know, I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Watching you flit around the pack like some lost little puppy, thinking you could ever be Luna. It’s pathetic, really.” Olivia’s tears welled up again, but she refused to let them fall in front of Katrina. “You don’t understand,” she whispered, trying to hold herself together. “Oh, I understand perfectly,” Katrina snapped, her voice cold. “You’ve always been weak, Olivia. Too soft, too gentle. Marcus saw it, the pack saw it, and now you finally see it too. You were never meant to lead. You’re not cut out for it.” Olivia’s heart clenched at Katrina’s words, but she couldn’t bring herself to fight back. A part of her had always feared that she wasn’t strong enough, and now those fears were being thrown in her face by the very person who had taken everything from her. Katrina took a step closer, her voice lowering into a cruel whisper. “Marcus has finally chosen a real mate. A Luna who will make this pack stronger, who can stand by his side and lead with power. And that’s me, not you.” Olivia’s lips trembled as she looked up at Katrina. “But we were mates,” she said, her voice breaking. “The Moon Goddess chose us…” Katrina laughed, a sharp, mocking sound. “The Moon Goddess made a mistake then. Or maybe she just wanted you to see how out of place you are here. Marcus realized it, and that’s why he rejected you. He’s mine now, and I’ll make sure he never regrets that decision.” Olivia’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. “You can have him, Katrina,” she said, her voice shaking but determined. “If he’s willing to reject our bond so easily, then maybe he was never really mine to begin with.” Katrina’s smile faltered for a moment, surprised by Olivia’s words, but she quickly recovered. “Good,” she sneered. “It’s better this way. Now you can slink off and disappear like the weakling you are, while I take my place as Luna.” With that, Katrina turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Olivia standing there, trembling with a mix of sorrow and anger. She watched Katrina go, her heart still aching, but somewhere deep inside, a small spark of resolve began to flicker. Katrina’s words had hurt, but they had also ignited something within her—a determination to prove that she was more than what they thought she was.
