Chapter three
"Your majesty, the vampires are getting more unpredictable by the second and we can't sit around waiting for them to murder us all."
My mom, Queen Elvenia, sighs, knowing they're all right but her pride can get the better of her. She never likes being told what to do.
"Yes, I know." She says. "We will find a way to deal with them."
"How do you propose we do that?" Another councilman says.
"Don't forget you are speaking to your queen, show some respect, councilman." Another one says, hushing up the other one. If I knew how dramatic this council would be, I would have brought snacks to watch the show.
My mom clears her throat, looking at me then at the table.
"We will deal with these creatures accordingly, they haven't been a threat to us before and they won't be now." She replies, practically glaring at everyone.
"Your majesty, if I may-"
"No, you won't." She stands up, forcing everyone to stand up and a riot starts. Everyone's voices pile on top of one another's until my mom's powerful voice silences them all.
"We won't speak of this again, go."
I can feel the tension of the room as the councilmen force themselves to leave, my mom turns to me as my siblings play.
"These vampires they all speak of are much deadlier than they think. There have been instances of vampire attacks, I didn't say it because it would cause panic. You must understand that when you become queen."
"But mom-"
"I invited you to the council meeting to allow you a look at what your nobles will look like when you inherit my throne. Panic is what everyone is accustomed to, fear is what we all feel as long as vampires continue to spread their disease."
"So how can we get rid of them?" I ask and she sighs.
"Unfortunately, we can't." She answers. "All we can do is hope that they don't think of hunting us down. The witches need to be more worried, their blood is much more potent than ours. The little savages would love more than anything to tear into the spell masters and feed till they can't anymore."
"Well, what happens when the witches are all hunted and they don't have a food source anymore? Won't they turn to us?" I ask and my mom scoffs.
"Darling, they don't even know we exist. But if they were to find out, witches are like humans. Minus the mind games they play. They breed and die off anyway, there will always be more witches and there's the human race to look to. Unlike witches, the human race can turn on each other as well. But the vampires will turn to the human race before they even find out about us. By then, we will take power and eradicate the vampires for good."
"How?-"
"No need to worry dear," she says. "It would take millennial for the vampires to find out we exist. Way after yours or my time."
I nod, knowing that asking questions gets me nowhere. She dismisses me and I see my older brother, eating grapes on the picnic area we have and laughing with the rest of our siblings. He sees my worried expression and pats the space next to him for me to sit.
"What's wrong, Aluer?" He asks and I sigh.
"The vampires."
He scoffs. "The vampires are not an issue."
"But they are," I say to him and he rolls his eyes. "First they'll hunt down the witches and let's say it takes hundreds of years for them to survive. But when they die off, the vampires turn to humans but they're so bland. Like when humans take drugs, they can't get enough of it. That is what witches are to vampires. The magic running in their veins make their blood more powerful, humans aren't going to be enough for them and they'll wonder what other creatures out there have blood as powerful as that. Werewolves smell awful so they'll never go near them and that's when they find out we exist and it's a massacre."
"I think you give the vampires a lot more credit, they're senseless savages." He replies. "They are consumed with the hunt and their instincts drive them crazy. They don't think before they kill."
"They've had years to master their abilities and that's my point, they will kill through witches and humans faster than we could imagine. It won't be long before they know we exist and try to kill us all."
"Aluer, you are too paranoid. Did you watch too many fighting games when you were little?"
"I'm serious," I punch him in the arm as he laughs. "Why did we have the fighting games? They seem a little barbaric to me."
"Don't let mom hear you say that."
I roll my eyes, knowing he'll never understand what I feel. We should be more worried and when I'm queen, I declare we destroy the vampires completely or come up with some kind of cure to help the humans who turn vampire.
"The 74th fighting games is commencing now!" One of the councilmen I saw at the table during the meeting announces, my mom nods at her throne, looking at me with excitement. I nervously smile at her but she doesn't notice my demeanor, my siblings stand up and we all enter the fighting pits. Two young kids with menacing snarls and mean glimmers in their eyes circle one another, a huge fence made of twisting branches traps them with each other.
The fighting games has always repulsed me, how someone can just kill without remorse. Reminds me of the vampires that slaughter anything they see. I watch as everyone is enthralled in the chaos, my mom is watching intently and the rest of my siblings are cheering them on. I look around to see if anyone is watching me as I slip away, if my mom won't do anything about the vampires then I will. I can't sit back and watch as millions are murdered when there's something I can do about it.
