Chapter two
I look up at the twinkling stars, they're beautiful but I find myself wondering about the sun. What would it be like to feel the warm sunlight on my face, seeing the sunset or sunrise on the beach. My dad has compelled us a beautiful mansion on a warm beach, but I can't even imagine the heat when the sun's out.
"You're out here again?" My best friend, Erica, asks. Joining me outside to look at the stars.
"Yes, I love the look of the stars." I reply, looking up at the stars. She sits next to me with a groan, allowing her tired muscles to relax. We've been hunting all night and the sunrise will come up soon.
"How's it going?" I ask and she shrugs.
"Dad says he might've been able to convince her to make us daylight rings."
"Daylight rings? I thought that was some kind of fairytale humans made up to give clueless vampires false hope."
"Me too. But it's true, witches are a lot harder to convince humans because of their stupid spells but dad feels like he's been able to persuade her. Wanna see?" She says and I shrug, nodding.
"In a minute, I just need to see the stars before they disappear and I won't be able to see them till tomorrow."
She nods. "Try not to fry, dad will have my head if you die for a stupid reason."
"So not for a good reason?"
She rolls her eyes. "Come in soon, or you'll miss the fun part." She laughs and I chuckle.
She leaves me to my thoughts and skips back inside. Thoughts of a better life consume me, ever since the witches poisoned my mom against us I've had a hatred for witches I can't describe. They've taken everything from us and I've vowed to myself if I ever met another witch I would make their life hell. I've been able to kill a witch or two but they're so hard to come by, you can't tell if they're humans too. They hide in plain sight and think we are some dumb animal, they don't know we've gotten smarter and learned to control ourselves more frequently over the years. It was easier when they never knew we were there, we would drink and indulge to our life's content.
Witch blood is so much more potent and delicious than human blood, the magic in their veins make their blood more desirable and that might be why we hunt witches more than humans. They're tasty but not as much as witches, werewolves smell bad so I've never tasted their blood, maybe it tastes good too if I could ever get past the taste. We've come across a faerie or fey once in a while, unlike witches they have immortality within them but taste just as good as witches. We don't hunt faerie or fey because they're mostly fairytales, my family only believes since we've seen them. They're world is hidden behind an invisible wall but you can find them if you know where to look.
I can see the early morning rays of sunlight come in and jump to my feet, knowing the sunlight will burn me to a crisp if I stay any longer. I make my way inside, the sun-proof windows staying pure to their creation. My dad compelled a worker to make us sun-proof windows and like a charm, he got to work right away.
I hear screams from downstairs and I smile, reminding me that's my best friend's passion. She used to be a nurse so she's used to dead bodies, our compassion died with our humanity. We feel nothing except excitement when it comes to torture, Erica can atest to that.
I make my way downstairs, my dad is watching with pride as Erica slices along the women's chest.
"Please, stop!" She screams, the basement my dad had for us is soundproof so our prey's screams can't be heard when we're thirsty.
"Okay, okay! I'll do it, just stop please. He has my baby!"
Erica chuckles, holding on the torturing as my dad intercepts.
"If you want her to stop and for my brother to let your son go, then you will make us daylight rings."
"Please, I don't know how. I never even knew daylight rings existed and that they were rumors."
My dad sighs, allowing Erica to resume.
"Okay! I'll do it!" The woman pleads and Erica seethes, I look at her with understanding knowing she wanted to cut her some more. The smell of the woman's blood is almost too much to bear and it takes everything in me to control myself.
"Wanna taste?" She asks, showing me the blade with thick witch blood still on it. She licks one side and I find myself unable to resist. My dad is watching and the woman looks at us with disgust, I hiss at her as she recoils. I hate when people watch me eat, it makes me angry but also a little insecure. I'm only 16 and I need to feel confident in myself.
I lick the other side my friend hasn't touched, relishing in the taste of it. I have to sit down since the taste of witch blood hits me a like a ton of bricks. Erica laughs and my dad chuckles, he looks at the woman and she looks down in fear.
"We'll start at nightfall."
To this I jump to my feet, feeling a little woozy from the blood I tasted.
"But dad, I want to see the sunset tonight."
"You'll get your chance, but for now we need rest. It's been a long day of trying to convince her, we need our strength for tomorrow night."
I sigh, knowing he's right. I glare at the woman's head and she recoils into a little ball on the floor, Erica and I chuckle. She puts her arm around me and we make our way upstairs, my dad separates from us to go to sleep and we make our way upstairs. I can't even contain my excitement for how tomorrow will go.
