28. Magic!

Jamie   As soon as I woke up, I was out of bed and running up to Bree’s room. When I skidded to a halt in the doorway, I was relieved beyond words that she was still here. She was okay.    I walked a few steps closer and could hold back a snort of laughter. She hadn’t taken a shower since escaping yet and had fallen asleep in a bowl of chocolate ice cream. She was an absolute mess, but a beautiful one.   She opened her eyes, fixing them on me instantly like lasers. "You interrupted my dream!" She said in a pouty voice.   That just made her look even funnier, and I couldn’t help but smile.   "What's so funny anyway?" She demanded. I could tell that she wasn’t the kind of person who woke up happy every morning, she was a give-me-at-least-an-hour-and-some-coffee kind of person.   "You fell asleep in the ice cream bowl, your face and hair are covered in chocolate now."   Bree picked her head up and touched her hair, which was sticky with ice cream. She sighed. "Where's the shower?"   I had no idea, so I pointed out the only door in her room beside the one I came through and hoped I was correct, she went in quickly. Almost immediately, there was a very loud gasp.   “You okay?” I called through the door.    “I’m a complete mess!” She wailed, “How could anyone want me as a queen, I look like a gorilla who had a mud bath!”    “You looked fine to me!” I said, and almost immediately regretted that. Was that an okay thing to say? I hadn’t spoken to anyone in a long time, never mind a girl, was that still an okay thing to say?   There was a shrill squeal from inside, and my heart sank into my stomach. Did that mean I said something wrong?    “Um, what…?” I asked hesitantly.    “This closet gives me any clothes I think about!”    Oh. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. That was it. ⇎     I sat in Bree’s room waiting for her, partly because I had nothing better to do but mostly because I was still afraid I’d lose her.    About fifteen minutes after Bree had gone in the shower, Chayton came in and narrowed his eyes at me. “What are you doing here?”    “I could ask you the same question.”    “I’m checking on Bree.”    “Best not; she’s in the shower.”    He gave me the coldest glare I’ve ever seen but didn’t respond. He sat on the end of the bed farthest from me. Within the next ten minutes, he was close enough to be repeatedly elbowing me. I ignored him for a while but eventually gave in to the temptation to elbow him back.     When Bree finally came out, my mind stopped. She was wearing an orange shirt with pink stripes, which made her eyes shine a brighter green. Her hair was shiny and clean, the honey color shone in a way I hadn’t seen in Sanguis, and she was just so indescribably beautiful…      "You guys are so immature..." She rolled her eyes as she saw us elbowing each other.   "Yes, we are," Chayton said with a grin as he elbowed me harder. I kept a smile on my face, even though that actually hurt.   Chayton jumped up quickly and appeared at Bree’s side inhumanly fast and picked up her hand. "You look like you could be a queen now." He kissed her hand then stuck his tongue out at me.   There was a hot feeling in my stomach that spread through the rest of my body, physically painful anger that made me want to hurt Chayton. Selfish! He shouldn’t touch her, he was bad, bad, BAD. I kept most of the emotion in, but I knew Chayton saw the hatred in my eyes.  He leaned down to kiss her lips, and I jumped up. I felt like I was twitching, I wanted him away from her so bad… Not safe, not safe, not safe… I walked in to see them sitting at the table making out. My breath stopped and I felt like I might pass out.   “Nope yourself! Nobody kisses me, I just got clean!” Bree squealed and pushed him away.    I let out a breath, feeling oddly detached all of a sudden. Bree’s voice farther away, vision unfocused, all previous emotions like a mist below me that I couldn’t currently touch. Like I was numb to the world.    Something touched my hand, snapping me back. “Hey, you alright? You looked like you were gonna say something, then just zoned out. For about five minutes.”    “Fine. I’m fine.” I said, wondering what’d happened myself. I still felt like I was in the mist, like nothing was real.    “Well, nothing happened while you were gone.” She joked.   “Good,” I muttered, trying to let myself breathe again.   “Why you little-“ Chayton lunged at me, knocking me down, and I rolled out the door, Chayton still on top of me throwing punches. My breath was still gone, a detached feeling lingering, but I wasn’t about to hold back the anger that resurfaced. I hadn’t even said anything worth beating me up over!   My fists flailing wildly, trying to hit him. A few times they did, and I heard satisfying grunts. Until we landed on the main floor, and Chayton growled, “Mine. Got it, you stinking dog?” And pushed me down the next flight of stairs. "Sabrina!" I heard Chayton yelling from upstairs. He sounded tense, more than I’d ever heard him sound. Something was wrong up there, and it couldn’t be that he tried to kill me.    I lay at the bottom of the stairs for another minute, trying to catch my breath and make sure nothing was broken. I hated that guy, but most of the anger seemed to be knocked out of me.    Finally, I got up, feeling bruises all over my body but nothing more serious. Once I got back up,  both Chayton and Bree were at the window. I hurried over and wished I hadn’t looked out the window.   In a big circle, up against the force field, were more vampires than I could count. In the front was who must be the king; a strong, tan man who looked to be in his late twenties and was clothed in red and purple clothes, a large golden crown perched on his short blonde hair.   "Oh... My...." Bree whispered in a very shaky voice.   "They know you're here..." Chayton whispered, horror in his voice.   "W-what should I do?" She stuttered.   "I don't know... I guess decide if you'd rather be queen or stay within this circle until you die..."   Well, that's a nice choice. Thanks for being so helpful, you giant leech!   "They're positive Bree’s here? We can't just stay here until they give up?" I asked desperately, trying to find another way.   "They're sure... If the king is here, they're sure... Plus they know this is my secret hide-out and I helped Bree escape so..."   "Can I go out and talk to them?" Bree asked.   "If that's what you really want..." Chayton said.   “Um, no way!” I cut in. Was she crazy? If she went out there, they’d find a way to kidnap her… And I couldn’t fight them all off.    “Hey, let her make up her own mind!” Chayton said.   We glared daggers at each other but neither of us made a move, just waited for the other to.   "I'm going out there to talk to them..." Bree whispered and moved towards the door.   "No, you're not!" I  picked her up, hoping I wasn’t being too rough. I wouldn’t be as bad as they would though. I marched her into her room, where I set her on her bed and handed her ice cream off the dresser beside the bed.    "Stay," I ordered her, hoping that she’d listen. I could tell by the way that she sighed and lay back that she wasn’t satisfied, and she wouldn’t stay put for long…    I looked at her for a moment, worry and sadness boiling up inside me. I couldn’t let her go… I couldn’t let her get hurt.
