Chapter One: The Girl He Liked in Silence
CHAPTER ONE THE GIRL HE LIKED IN SILENCE 1. The Girl Across the Classroom In the beautiful country of Averna, there was a town called Bellford. It was a peaceful town with busy streets, small shops, and schools filled with young people who dreamed of becoming successful in life. One of the best-known schools in Bellford was Westbridge Academy. The school had six years of secondary education, and students who attended it experienced many things as they grew older. They made friends, faced challenges, fell in love, and discovered that life was not always as simple as they imagined. For Gracious and Crystal, Westbridge Academy was more than just a school. It was the place where their story began. They had been classmates since their first year, but they barely spoke to each other. Gracious knew Crystal's name, and Crystal knew his. They attended the same lessons, wrote the same examinations, and listened to the same teachers. However, they belonged to different groups of friends, so they rarely had a reason to talk. But there was something Crystal did not know. Gracious had liked her for a long time. He could not explain exactly when his feelings started. He only knew that he had slowly begun to notice her more than he noticed other girls. He liked her smile, the way she treated people, and how she remained focused during lessons. She was friendly without trying to impress everybody, and she had a calm way of speaking that he found interesting. Gracious was not a shy boy. He was confident, playful, and sometimes stubborn. He enjoyed making jokes with his friends and was never afraid to speak his mind. However, whenever he thought about approaching Crystal, he suddenly became nervous. He would plan what to say, imagine how the conversation might go, and then change his mind before doing anything. His best friend, Daniel, eventually noticed. One morning, while their classmates were preparing for the first lesson, Daniel caught Gracious staring toward the windows. "Guy, what are you looking at?" Daniel asked. "Nothing." Daniel followed his gaze and immediately smiled. "Ah! It's Crystal again." Gracious turned sharply. "Keep your voice down!" Daniel laughed. "So it's true. You like her." "Who told you that?" "Your eyes told me." Gracious shook his head and returned to his book. Daniel leaned closer. "Why don't you just talk to her?" "Because I don't know what to say." "Say hello. Is that not English?" Gracious laughed despite himself. "You're not serious." "I'm very serious. You can talk to every other person in this school, but when it comes to one girl, you suddenly lose your confidence." "Daniel, please face your book." Daniel continued laughing. Gracious tried to concentrate on his notes, but his eyes returned to Crystal. She was sitting near the window, speaking with her closest friend, Melissa. Crystal laughed at something Melissa said, and Gracious found himself smiling too. He knew he could not keep admiring her from a distance forever. One day, he would have to talk to her. He just did not know that the opportunity would come sooner than he expected. 2. An Ordinary Tuesday Crystal was a friendly and intelligent girl who took her education seriously. She enjoyed spending time with Melissa, who was talkative, playful, and always ready to tease her. That Tuesday morning, Melissa was complaining about their mathematics assignment. "Crystal, I think our teacher hates us," she said. Crystal looked up from her notebook. "Why?" "Because why would one person give us so many questions to solve?" "Maybe because we are students." Melissa stared at her. "Sometimes I wonder how you manage to be so calm." Crystal laughed. "Complaining won't solve the questions." "At least it will reduce my suffering." They both laughed. Across the classroom, Gracious was facing a different problem. He had opened his English notebook and discovered that he had missed an important part of the previous lesson. He checked the pages twice, hoping he had written the notes somewhere else. Unfortunately, the section was missing. He sighed. "What's wrong?" Daniel asked. "I missed part of the English notes." "Collect them from someone." Gracious looked around the classroom. Several students were packing their books, while others were still writing. Then he noticed Crystal arranging her notes. He remembered that her handwriting was neat and easy to read. Perhaps he could ask her. He stood up. Daniel immediately smiled. "Where are you going?" "To collect notes." "From Crystal?" Gracious gave him a warning look. "Don't start." Daniel raised both hands. "Okay, champion. Good luck." Gracious walked toward Crystal's desk. His heart was beating faster than usual, but he tried to behave normally. When he reached her desk, he cleared his throat. "Hi, Crystal." She looked up, surprised. "Hi." Gracious held out his notebook. "Please, I missed part of the English notes. Can you help me complete them?" Crystal took the notebook and checked the missing section. "Were you sleeping during the lesson?" "No." "Then what were you doing?" "Thinking about important things." Crystal raised an eyebrow. "What important things?" "Things that are too complicated to explain." She laughed. "You're funny." Gracious smiled. "Thank you. I try my best." Crystal moved his notebook closer and began copying the missing notes. Gracious sat in the empty chair beside her. At first, they spoke about the lesson. Then they started joking about their teacher's long notes and how difficult it was to copy everything before the bell rang. The conversation felt natural. Crystal did not seem uncomfortable around him, and Gracious slowly forgot how nervous he had been. When she finished, she returned the notebook. "Here you go." He examined the page. "This is much better than my handwriting." Crystal laughed. "At least you know." "So you're insulting me after helping me?" "I'm only telling the truth." Gracious shook his head. "I came here for help, not embarrassment." "You're welcome anyway." They laughed together. Before returning to his seat, Gracious thanked her again. "Thank you, Crystal. I really appreciate it." "No problem, Gracious." As he walked away, he felt happier than he wanted to admit. It had been a simple conversation, but it meant something to him. He had finally spoken to the girl he had liked in silence. And she had been kind to him. 3. A New Friendship The next morning, Gracious arrived at school and decided that he would not act like a stranger around Crystal again. When she entered the classroom with Melissa, he looked up from his book. "Good morning, Crystal." She seemed surprised for a moment, then smiled. "Good morning, Gracious." Melissa looked at her friend and smiled mischievously. Crystal noticed immediately. "What's that smile for?" "Nothing," Melissa replied. "Melissa." "I said nothing!" Crystal shook her head and went to her seat. Gracious tried to concentrate on his work, but he was pleased that he had greeted her. Over the next few days, their conversations became more frequent. Sometimes Crystal borrowed his ruler. Sometimes Gracious asked her about an assignment. Other times, they discussed lessons they found difficult. One afternoon, Crystal approached him with her mathematics notebook. "Gracious, can you explain this question to me?" He examined the problem. "Of course. Sit down." He explained the steps carefully, making sure she understood the method instead of simply giving her the answer. When she solved the next question correctly, she smiled. "I got it!" Gracious nodded. "Of course you did." "Thank you. I was struggling with it before." "Anytime." Crystal studied him for a moment. "You're actually a good teacher." Gracious placed a hand on his chest. "Actually?" She laughed. "I mean, you're better than I expected." "That doesn't sound like a compliment." "It is. Just accept it." He smiled. "Okay. Thank you." Crystal returned to her seat feeling happy. She had always known Gracious as the confident boy who joked around with his friends. Now she was beginning to discover another side of him. He was helpful, thoughtful, and more serious than she had expected. Gracious was also discovering things about Crystal. She was intelligent, but she was not proud. She could laugh at herself, and she treated people with respect. She did not make him feel foolish when he asked questions, and she was willing to listen when he explained something. He began to enjoy their conversations more each day. Meanwhile, Melissa had started asking questions. One afternoon, as she and Crystal walked toward the school gate, Melissa suddenly said, "You and Gracious seem close these days." Crystal looked at her. "We're classmates." "Of course. But you didn't talk this much before." "We have been studying together." "Is that all?" Crystal sighed. "Melissa, what are you trying to say?" Melissa grinned. "I'm asking whether you like him." Crystal stopped walking. "Like him? As in what?" "You know what I mean." Crystal shook her head. "We're just friends." Melissa nodded slowly. "Okay." Crystal looked at her suspiciously. "Why did you say it like that?" "Like what?" "Forget it." Melissa burst out laughing. Crystal tried to remain annoyed, but she soon joined her. The truth was that Crystal did enjoy talking to Gracious. She liked his humour and the way he encouraged her when she struggled with schoolwork. However, she had not decided whether her feelings were romantic. For now, she was happy to be his friend. 4. The Academic Competition A week later, their English teacher entered the classroom with an announcement. "The school will be holding an inter-class academic competition next month. I have selected two students from this class to represent us." The students became quiet. The teacher opened his folder. "Gracious and Crystal." Both students looked surprised. Daniel leaned toward Gracious. "Congratulations, champion." Gracious smiled. "Thank you." Daniel lowered his voice. "Now you have an official reason to spend time with your favourite person." Gracious nudged him. "Please behave yourself." At the other side of the classroom, Melissa was giving Crystal a knowing look. Crystal pointed at her. "Don't even think about it." Melissa laughed. "I haven't said anything!" After the lesson, Gracious approached Crystal. "Looks like we're partners." Crystal smiled. "Yes. I hope you're ready." "For the competition?" "Obviously." Gracious pretended to think. "I was planning to lose, but now that you're on my team, I might change my mind." Crystal laughed. "You were planning to lose?" "I like keeping my expectations low." "That's a terrible strategy." "Then I'll depend on your intelligence." She shook her head. "You'll have to do your own work." They agreed to meet in the library after school to practise. The following afternoon, Gracious arrived early and arranged his books on a table near the window. Crystal arrived a few minutes later. "Sorry I'm late," she said. He checked his watch. "You're only two minutes late." "Late is late." "Should I report you to the teacher?" She laughed. "Please don't. I have a reputation to protect." They began working through the practice questions. Sometimes they agreed immediately. Other times, they disagreed and had to check their notes. When Crystal answered a question incorrectly, Gracious explained the solution without making fun of her. When he made a mistake, she corrected him, and he eventually admitted that she was right. Their study sessions became something they both looked forward to. One afternoon, while they were packing their books, Crystal asked a question. "Gracious, why didn't we talk before?" He looked at her. "What do you mean?" "We've been in the same class for almost three years. We knew each other's names, but we never really spoke." Gracious thought for a moment. "I think we were just in different circles. You had your friends, and I had mine. We didn't have much reason to talk." Crystal nodded. "That's true." He continued, "I don't like forcing myself into people's lives. If someone wants to talk to me, that's fine. If they don't, that's also fine." Crystal smiled. "I'm glad we're talking now." Gracious looked at her. "Really?" "Yes. You're not as difficult as I thought." He placed a hand on his chest. "Wow. That's the nicest insult I've received today." Crystal laughed. "I'm serious." He smiled. "I'm glad too." For a moment, they looked at each other without speaking. Then Crystal packed her bag. "We should leave before it gets too late." Gracious nodded. "You're right." They walked out of the library together, talking about the competition and what they planned to study next. For Gracious, every conversation was another chance to understand Crystal better. He no longer wanted to like her only because of her smile. He wanted to know her dreams, her fears, and the person she was when nobody was watching. He was beginning to understand that real feelings needed more than admiration. They needed friendship, patience, and honesty. 5. The First Messages After a few study sessions, Gracious suggested that they exchange phone numbers so they could share practice questions. Crystal agreed. That evening, he sent her a message. Gracious: Hey, it's Gracious. Just checking that you saved my number. Crystal: Yes, I saved it. Gracious: Good. I was worried you might save me as "the boy who talks too much." Crystal: I should have. Gracious laughed at his phone. Gracious: Wow. Is this how you treat your academic partner? Crystal: You will survive. Gracious: I hope so. Crystal: Send the practice questions before you start complaining. He sent the questions, and they discussed the answers for a while. Their messages soon became more than schoolwork. They talked about funny things that happened during lessons, their favourite foods, and the subjects they enjoyed most. Sometimes they asked each other how the day had gone. One evening, Crystal sent him a message. Crystal: Are you always this serious about school? Gracious: No. Crystal: Really? Gracious: Sometimes I'm more serious. Crystal laughed. Crystal: You are not funny. Gracious: Yet you're laughing. Crystal: Your confidence needs supervision. Gracious: That's why I have you. Crystal smiled at the screen. Melissa, who was sitting beside her, noticed. "Who are you chatting with?" "No one," Crystal replied. Melissa looked at her. "No one is making you smile like that?" Crystal sighed. "Melissa, please." "Is it Gracious?" Crystal did not answer. Melissa clapped her hands softly. "I knew it!" "We're just friends," Crystal said. "Of course. Just friends." Crystal threw a pillow at her, and they both laughed. Later that night, Crystal thought about Gracious. She enjoyed talking to him, and she was beginning to look forward to his messages. She liked that he could make her laugh even after a difficult day. Still, she was not ready to call it love. She wanted to understand her feelings before giving them a name. Gracious was thinking about her too, but he reminded himself not to rush anything. He did not want Crystal to feel pressured, and he did not want to mistake her kindness for a promise. He was happy with the friendship they were building. For now, that was enough. 6. The Day of the Competition The day of the competition arrived. Students gathered in the school hall, cheering for their classmates. Teachers arranged the seats, checked the microphones, and prepared the questions. Gracious sat beside Crystal near the front. He looked calm, but she noticed that his fingers were tapping against his knee. "Are you nervous?" she asked. "No." Crystal looked at his hand. "Then why are you doing that?" "I'm practising a new hand movement." She laughed. "You're nervous." "Maybe a little. What about you?" "I'm nervous too." "You don't look nervous." "That's because I'm pretending." Gracious laughed. "Then we're both pretending." The competition began. The first round covered general knowledge. Gracious answered a question correctly, earning cheers from their classmates. Crystal answered the next question, and their teacher nodded approvingly. As the competition continued, they worked together and encouraged each other. At one point, Gracious received a difficult mathematics question. He read it carefully, thought through the steps, and finally found the answer. He was correct. Their classmates cheered. Crystal turned toward him. "Nice one." He smiled. "Thank you." A few questions later, Crystal was asked a science question. She knew the topic but became uncertain when she heard the wording. Gracious leaned toward her. "Take your time. You know this." She took a breath and considered the question again. Then she gave her answer. It was correct. Their classmates cheered even louder. Crystal turned toward Gracious with a relieved smile. "Thank you." He nodded. "You had it." After several rounds, the competition ended. Their class came second. Some students celebrated, while others complained that they had almost won. Their teacher congratulated Gracious and Crystal for doing well. "You represented the class properly," he told them. "I'm proud of your effort." They thanked him. Afterward, Crystal turned toward Gracious. "We did well." He nodded. "We did." "Maybe next time we'll win." "Next time, we'll win." They stood together for a moment, watching their classmates leave the hall. Then Gracious decided to say something he had been thinking about for days. "Crystal?" She looked at him. "Yes?" "I've really enjoyed getting to know you." Her expression softened. "I've enjoyed getting to know you too." He took a breath. "I know we started talking because of schoolwork, but I'd like us to keep talking even when we don't have an assignment or competition to discuss." Crystal smiled. "Of course we can." Gracious felt relieved. "Really?" "Yes, Gracious. You don't need a competition as an excuse to talk to me." He laughed. "Good. Because I don't think I can survive another competition just to have a conversation with you." Crystal laughed too. "You're so dramatic." "Only sometimes." They walked out of the hall together. Gracious was happy. He had not confessed his feelings, and he had not asked Crystal to be his girlfriend. But he had taken another step toward someone he cared about, and she had welcomed it. That evening, Crystal sent him a message. Crystal: I had fun today. Gracious: Me too. We made a good team. Crystal: We did. We should study together again sometime. Gracious: Definitely. He placed his phone beside him and smiled. A few weeks earlier, Crystal had been the girl he admired from across the classroom. Now they were friends who could joke, study, and talk about their lives. He knew there was still a lot he did not know about her. He also knew that she might never feel the same way about him. But he did not want to force anything. He wanted their friendship to grow naturally. 7. Where Everything Started As the weeks passed, Gracious and Crystal became more comfortable around each other. They still spent time with their own friends, but their groups began to mix. Sometimes the four of them sat together during lunch. Other times, they walked toward the school gate together, laughing about something that had happened during class. Daniel and Melissa quickly discovered that they enjoyed teasing their friends. Whenever Gracious and Crystal disagreed about an answer, Daniel would pretend to take Crystal's side just to annoy Gracious. Melissa would then defend Gracious, and the argument would become so silly that everybody ended up laughing. Their school days became more enjoyable. Gracious learned that Crystal could be stubborn when she believed she was right. She worried about examinations and sometimes kept her feelings to herself when she thought speaking might cause a problem. Crystal learned that Gracious used jokes to hide his nervousness sometimes. He could be confident in public but thoughtful in private. He cared about his friends and took his responsibilities seriously when something mattered to him. Neither of them was perfect, but they were beginning to understand each other. One afternoon, the four friends sat beneath a tree in the school compound. Daniel was telling a story, and Melissa was laughing so hard that she could barely speak. Crystal turned toward Gracious. "Is he always this dramatic?" Gracious considered the question. "No. Sometimes he's worse." Daniel pointed at him. "This is why I need new friends." Melissa shook her head. "Nobody else would tolerate you." They all laughed. Gracious looked at Crystal as she smiled. For a moment, he remembered how nervous he had been when he first approached her. He had spent so much time wondering what to say that he nearly missed the chance to know her. Now, talking to her felt natural. He had learned something important: liking someone from a distance was easy, but getting to know them required courage. It required patience, honesty, and respect. He could not decide how Crystal would feel about him in the future. He could not promise that everything would always be perfect. But he could choose to be a good friend and allow their connection to grow. Crystal was beginning to think about him differently too. She was not ready to call her feelings love, but she knew she enjoyed his company. She looked forward to their conversations and felt comfortable sharing her thoughts with him. For now, she was happy to see where their friendship would lead. Neither of them knew what the future held. They did not know about the disagreements, misunderstandings, and difficult choices that might one day test their relationship. They only knew that something good had begun. Gracious had spent months liking Crystal in silence. Then, on an ordinary Tuesday, he had finally walked across the classroom and asked her for help with his notes. It had taken only a few words to begin their first real conversation. But those few words opened the door to a friendship that neither of them had expected. They were no longer just two classmates who knew each other's names. They were becoming important parts of each other's lives. And although neither of them was ready to admit that their feelings might grow into something deeper, the possibility was there, quietly waiting. For Gracious and Crystal, that was where everything started.
