Chapter I: The Window
"I didn't realize that I had to appreciate every moment of my life. I learned that, but at what cost? I was getting up every day and doing my job, and this world, which had become so monotonous for me, had become very boring. Until I realized the value of this monotony. You never think that you will wake up a new day and look for that monotony, I assure you. There may come a day when you will sacrifice everything to live the life you hate again. The worst thing is regret. One day, everything you love will leave you or be taken away from you in some way. I'm glad I learned sooner rather than later that nothing lasts forever. I don't fool myself anymore, and I don't run away from reality when I have to face it."
Moving to a new city is a very difficult process for almost everyone. The friends you left behind, your neighborhood and maybe even the people you thought you would never miss are now behind you. You feel as if you have been reborn and started life all over again. There is nothing you can do anymore. Life always leads you to new adventures. Ian's adventure was just beginning when he and his family moved from a small and quiet village to the big city.
The tension between his parents in recent years had forced them to make a very serious decision. Although Ian did not want his parents to divorce, it would be best for the peace of the family. When he asked, this was the only explanation he heard from his parents.
The parents meet one last time to decide what to do and how to do it. Ian was sitting in his room listening to music with headphones in his ears. After hours of tense conversation, there was a knock on the door of Ian's room. His parents came in, and his father sat on the armchair in the room while his mother sat next to him on the bed.
As difficult as it was, Ian finally had to decide which one he wanted to stay with.
They both looked into their children's eyes and hoped that their children would be with them. There were tears in everyone's eyes. The family was ashamed that they had made their little boy make this difficult decision. They had said many times that they would never go against his decision. Ian, on the other hand, had chosen to live with a person neither of them had expected. This person was his grandmother, indirectly his mother.
The family wanted everything to be better for their son and for him to get through this ordeal with minimal damage. Plans were made and Ian said goodbye to his friends and the village where he lived. Very soon he and his mother would move to the big city to live with his grandmother. His father was going to start working in another city close to that one. They thought it would be good for Ian to get together at least once a week and play the role of family.
Days passed and when it was time to leave, Ian sat in the back seat of the car and looked at the neighborhood where he grew up, the road where he went to school, the houses of his friends one last time with tears in his eyes. After a three-hour journey, they arrived in a big, noisy city.
People are running everywhere, cars are lined up in a row and everyone is honking their horns. People laughing and having fun, angry people. Stray animals were waiting at every corner. His first visit to a big city scared Ian a little. All this chaos made him question his decision. This was going to be his new home, and he had to get used to it.
They had reached a slightly quieter neighborhood of the city. It was a bit more like where Ian had come from. There were fewer buildings and people than in the center of the city. Generally, large and small parks and large pine tree forests started just a little bit ahead of the neighborhood. Remembering where his grandmother lived, Ian realized that they were very close.
The car stopped in front of an old apartment block. Ian got out of the car quickly before his father and mother and looked around. He couldn't see anything that attracted his attention except a few apartment blocks opposite each other and a big old park. At that moment, he was awakened by the voice of his grandmother who was waiting for them on the balcony.
He looked up to find his grandmother sitting on an old iron chair on the second floor, smiling at him. Ian was very excited about seeing her. He wanted to run to her immediately. He pushed the rusted iron apartment door and climbed up the stairs, which could be called dusty and dirty. When he knocked on the old wooden door, he longingly hugged his grandmother, who opened the door, and they immediately went inside.
His family also came to the house with their belongings. His father, who did not want to stay there any longer, took his son in his arms and stroked his head nicely. He reminded him that he would always be there when he needed him, that he was not far from here and that they would meet often. As he was leaving, he took out a large sum of money from his pocket and squeezed it into Ian's hand and left the house. Ian did not say anything in response to his words.
The moment his father left the house, he ran to the balcony. He was watching him get into his car and leave the neighborhood. Clinging to the bars of the balcony, with tears in his eyes, he could only silently say, "Don't go". His leaving was very hard for Ian. His mother, who came to him and saw Ian's condition, repeated his father's words and told him that he could see him whenever he wanted.
Ian's father was a police officer in the same city. When the divorce came out, he wanted to be assigned here to be close to his son. He had rented a house on the other side of the city and was going to live there alone. His mother had quit her job and was going to find a new job in the city.
The grandmother took Ian by the shoulders and said, "Come and let me show you your room." Ian and his grandmother went down the corridor opposite the kitchen and entered another room, which was smaller than the other rooms. There was not much furniture in the room, only a table, a bed and a cupboard. Ian excitedly looked for a door in the room. Then he looked at his grandmother's face.
"Well, Grandma, isn't there a balcony here?" he said shyly.
Her grandmother smiled and took her to the next room and said, "There is no balcony in your room, but look, this is my room. You can come and spend time here whenever you want."
He hugged his grandmother with excitement and went out on the balcony and started to look around. There was a road between the balcony and the apartment blocks opposite. There were usually pine and oak trees around. Just around the corner from the apartment block was a big park.
The women were sitting on benches and talking while their children were playing in the park. It was a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood. For a moment, Ian felt as if he was in his village.
He went back to his room and stood by the old wooden table. He looked at his bed, his wardrobe and other old things in the room that were no longer in use. It needed a good cleaning. He dragged the chair next to the table to the window. He sat down, opened the curtain and looked around. This place had a view just like her grandmother's balcony. As he watched the cars and people passing on the road, something he hadn't noticed until now caught his eye in the opposite apartment block.
Then he saw that there was a girl, almost his own age, sitting on the balcony on the second floor of the opposite apartment. She was putting her drink on the table, reading her book and listening to music through her headphones at the same time. Ian panicked a little at first. He must have been afraid that she would see him or think that he was a p*****t looking at her. Nevertheless, he continued to stare at her secretly with some courage.
She had long red hair and white skin. He could not make out her face at this distance, but she looked like a tall girl. As she sat in her chair turning the page of her book, she suddenly crossed her legs and opened the short skirt she was wearing. Ian was shocked by this sight. For the first time in his life he saw a girl so n***d.
He quickly got up from his seat and threw himself on his bed. It was quite shameful to look at such a thing, but it was also very beautiful, he thought to himself. While his heart was beating fast, he was very extended from the sight he saw. While he was waiting like that with his head under the pillow, he fell asleep with the tiredness of his journey.
