Chapter 1
The operating room was filled with blinding, cold light, tearing apart Lingchen's last glimmer of hope. Lying on the surgical table, she could feel the cold metal seeping through her thin surgical gown, chilling her to the bone. Lingchen's consciousness was gradually slipping away. Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier, as if weighed down by a thousand pounds. She strained to keep them open, but her strength was ebbing away bit by bit.
"Mubai..." Lingchen's voice was so faint it was barely audible. She mustered every ounce of her remaining strength to whisper the name. She had expected to hear a familiar, gentle response, but what greeted her was a burst of cold, mocking laughter.
Mubai leaned down close to her, his sharply defined face almost touching Lingchen's pale one. His lips curled into a smile, but his eyes were filled with detachment and coldness. His voice was icy and derisive: "Save you? Ha, Lingchen, out of respect for the fact that you are my fiancée, let me tell you this: Everything that is happening today was arranged by me. You owe a debt for your father's actions. It's only fair that you pay it with your heart."
Lingchen's heart twisted painfully. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Mubai had been adopted by the Ling family when he was just a teenager. Her father had treated him like his own son, showering him with kindness and favor. Even on his deathbed, her father had promised her to Mubai. After her father's passing, Lingchen had taken over as the CEO of Ling Corporation, and Mubai had naturally become the vice chairman. He had always been so attentive and caring to her. Lingchen had never imagined that he could be so cruel to her.
"No... it can't be..." Lingchen's voice trembled as she struggled to move her eyes, searching Mubai's gaze for a hint of the familiar warmth she once knew. But all she saw was endless coldness and resentment.
"Do you think I would show mercy to the daughter of my enemy?" Mubai's voice was as cold as ice. "Your father ruined everything for me, and you are his only weakness. Today, you will pay the price."
Lingchen's mind was in chaos. She vividly remembered the car accident just moments ago as she drove out of the company's underground parking lot. She had thought it was just a coincidence, but now she realized it was all part of Mubai's meticulously planned conspiracy.
At that moment, a figure in a white isolation gown approached the operating table. Lingchen recognized her—Tang Yuner, a top star under Ling Entertainment and her subordinate. Tang Yuner suffered from congenital heart disease, a secret she had always kept hidden. But today, she had become the key to this sinister plot.
"Ms. Ling, long time no see," Tang Yuner looked down at Lingchen with undisguised triumph in her eyes. "Your heart will soon be part of me. So, while you're still conscious, let me thank you personally."
Lingchen's brows furrowed tightly. She could smell the scent of conspiracy in the air, mingled with the antiseptic. She finally understood that everything was a meticulously orchestrated plot by Mubai and Tang Yuner, and she was merely a pawn in their game.
"You... are despicable!" Lingchen's voice was filled with anger and frustration as she glared at Mubai, trying to find some explanation in his eyes. But all she saw was his cold indifference. Mubai simply let out a disdainful snort, turned around, and took out a document. He forcefully grabbed one of Lingchen's fingers and pressed it onto the paper.
Affected by the anesthesia, Lingchen couldn't see what was written on the document, but she knew it was a prearranged will. Her heart filled with despair as she realized how thoroughly they had planned this.
"What did my father do to you?" Lingchen's voice trembled slightly as she struggled to stay conscious, but the anesthesia was growing stronger, and her consciousness was slipping away.
"Your father betrayed me, and I am just reclaiming what is rightfully mine," Mubai's voice was cold and resolute. He turned away from Lingchen without another glance. "Your heart is the best compensation."
Lingchen's consciousness was fading bit by bit. She felt her body growing colder and heavier. She was filled with regret and frustration. There were still so many things she hadn't finished, so many people she needed to protect. But her voice grew weaker and weaker until it finally disappeared into the cold air of the operating room.
"No..." This was Lingchen's last whisper, filled with endless regret and despair, as her world turned pitch black.
