Prologue
Life is anything but fair. It has been two years since I thought life, for once, would be fair to me. And now, I'm thinking about how foolish I am for even believing that 'fair' is a word that exists in my life. Maybe I have been cursed since birth. Destined to be a lone star. That even divine intervention or whatever miraculous charms there are in the world could not change my destiny. "Rie, do you have any news about Felix yet? I heard he just returned from the States yesterday and they are planning to throw a party for him tomorrow". I stopped arranging the papers that were piled up on the table when I heard what Sienna said. I slightly lowered my head and let out a sigh. I can feel her looking at me with concerned eyes, worried if she said something wrong. "Ah, no," I tried to sound as good as I could so she wouldn't worry about me. "I hadn't heard any news about his return. One more thing, it's been a long time since we parted ways". I faked a laugh to somehow assure her that I was okay... when, in fact, I was not. "Carrie, I love you. I will always love you, no matter what happens." I smiled, bitterly. Will you still love me without the ring? Your love for me, your feelings for me are all fake. I tied you to this fake destiny of mine. I'm so sorry, I don't deserve you. Those are the words I wanted to say while looking at those deep brown eyes. You caressed my face, wiping the tears from my face. "Hey, why are you crying? Did I say something wrong? Or because you love me so much that you are crying?" Yes, I'm so in love with you that I can't save myself. Ah, no. There is no saving here, I'm trapped. Seeing that I just continued staring straight into his eye and not responding, he chuckled. His chuckle sounded so good in my ears. So good that I want to cherish it as long as I can possibly. If only I could be selfish, I would never let you go. Ever. "Rie, are you okay?" Sienna ended my reminiscing moment with her question. Sab sighed, "You still have the guts to ask, huh. Why did you mention Felix? You know our friend is still moving on." "I don't know! Besides, it was a long time ago." Sab glared at Sie, "Anyway, I'm sorry." Sie let out a nervous laugh. I laughed at both of them. They really look like children when bickering with each other. "Speaking of Felix, I was invited by our mutual friend to his party tomorrow. She said I could bring my friends since it would be a huge party. Hmm, I think it would be a surprise party." Knowing him, he hates crowded places, so of course he didn't plan this. But still... a party? I didn't think we would see each other again. "Wow, look at you, Sab. What were you saying a while ago?" "Why did you mention Felix," Sienna added, mocking Sab's words a while ago. "And yet you are here inviting us to the party?!" Sienna looked like a cat ready to pounce on her enemy. But it didn't last long... "Anyway, free food?" Sienna's eyes glistened at the thought of free food. She seemed annoyed a while ago, but now she's excited about the party. "Of course! So what? Are you coming?" Sienna did not answer, instead, she was busy organizing the folders so that she could finish work early. Sab rolled her eyes, "of course, you are coming. Why did I even bother asking?" "How about you, Rie? We can't go there without you, you know." This time, both Sab and Sie were waiting for my answer. Sab's eyes are screaming, it's a party, time to relax! Meanwhile, Sie's only concern is the free food. "You don't want to? You never know, maybe this is the closure that you are waiting for..." Yeah, for closure. Just for closure. Even just seeing him from afar, confirming that he is happy with his life... That is enough closure for me. So I agreed.
