CHAPTER 1: THE MEETING
The night draped the alleyway in an oppressive shroud, the moon veiled behind thick clouds that swallowed the light, leaving only murky darkness in its wake. Jenna's footsteps echoed against the damp pavement, each sound reverberating like a warning in the stillness. She knew she shouldn't have taken this shortcut home, but the allure of a quicker route had been too tantalizing to resist.
An uncomfortable sensation pricked at her senses, sending a shiver down her spine. Something was in the air, a tension that seemed to be sparking with lightning. The quick rhythm of Jenna's heartbeat against her rib cage mirrored the beat of her mounting panic.
Then a figure appeared out of the shadows, a shape with its features hidden by the night's veil of darkness. Jenna froze, her mind racing with a basic impulse to run, her breath tightening in her throat.
"Who's there?" Her voice wavered, just discernible above the low murmurs of the evening.
The creature said nothing, a silent ghost that loomed large in the shadows. As Jenna tried to make sense of what was happening, her own heartbeat could be heard thundering in her ears.
Jenna stumbled backward in fear as the creature suddenly lunged forward in a whirl of movement. Panic and confusion flooded her head as her heart thumped like an angry drum.
But just before impact, a hand appeared out of the shadows and grabbed Jenna's arm, its delicate touch belied by its might. She teetered on the brink of the abyss and gasped, her breath catching in her throat.
A familiar yet strange voice called out, "Easy there," from the shadows, its gentle tone calming Jenna's strained nerves.
Jenna met the stranger's gaze as her eyes grew used to the low light, gradually bringing their features into focus. She had never seen this face before, but there was something oddly familiar about it, a shudder running down her spine as she recognized it.
Nodding, Jenna found it difficult to articulate her thanks, her voice stopping in her throat. She managed to mumble, "Thank you," her voice scarcely heard over the silence of the night.
With a ghostly smile playing at the edges of their lips, the stranger nodded. Their tone was firm yet gentle, "You shouldn't be out here alone at this hour."
With a heavy heart, Jenna swallowed the words they had spoken. She whispered, "I know," as her eyes returned to the shadows that threatened to encroach on her field of vision.
Jenna's mind was racing with questions as she settled down next to the stranger. Who was this individual? And why, in her hour of greatest need, had they saved her?
She had no idea that this random meeting would start a series of events that would permanently change her life.
The man smiled comfortingly at her and said, "Come on," gesturing for her to follow. "I'll walk you home."
"Are you alright?" There was evident worry in the stranger's voice and eyes.
