"No matter what happens, we'll always find our way back to each other."

Those were the last words Ethan Cole and Lily Hart whispered beneath the old oak tree before life tore them apart.

Ten years later, they meet again as strangers carrying familiar scars.

Lily never forgot the boy who promised to stay. Ethan never stopped loving the girl he was forced to leave behind. But time has changed them, and the truth behind their separation is far more painful than either of them imagined.

As old memories resurface and long-buried secrets threaten to unravel everything, they must decide whether love is worth risking their hearts a second time.

Some promises are easy to make.

Keeping them is another story.

Will they finally fulfill the promise they once made... or will they break each other's hearts all over again?

Chapter 1 The Night Everything Changed
The football landed directly on Lily Hart's book. She stared at the muddy pages for three long seconds. Then she looked up. "What did you do?" The boy standing a few feet away froze. He was about her age, with messy brown hair, dirty knees, and a football tucked under one arm. "I'm sorry." Lily lifted the ruined book. "You destroyed it." "I didn't mean to." "You still did." The boy walked closer, looking at the muddy pages. "I'll buy you another one." Lily almost laughed. "With what?" He reached into his pocket and pulled out three coins. He placed them in her palm. "This is all I have." Lily looked at the coins. Then at him. She wanted to stay angry, but there was something about his serious expression that made it difficult. "What's your name?" "Ethan." "Lily." He smiled. "So... are we friends now?" "No." His smile disappeared. Lily hugged the ruined book against her chest. "You still owe me a new one." Ethan grinned. "Then I guess I'll have to see you again." Neither of them knew how true those words would become. Years passed. Ethan and Lily became inseparable. They went to school together. They walked home together. They shared secrets beneath the old oak tree overlooking Willow Creek. The tree became their place. Whenever life became too loud, they went there. At thirteen, Ethan told Lily he would become rich. At fourteen, Lily told him she wanted to leave Willow Creek someday. At fifteen, they began noticing that their friendship was changing. At sixteen, they stopped pretending they didn't feel it. And at seventeen, Ethan finally said the words Lily had secretly been waiting to hear. "I love you." They were sitting beneath the old oak tree. Lily stared at him. "You've taken long enough." Ethan laughed. "So you love me too?" She looked away, pretending to be annoyed. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "Don't push your luck." He smiled and held out his little finger. "Then promise me something." Lily hooked her finger around his. "What?" "No matter what happens, we'll find our way back to each other." She looked at him. "Even if we leave Willow Creek?" "Especially then." "Even if our families don't agree?" "I'll still find you." "Even if everything changes?" Ethan's smile faded. "Everything can change." He squeezed her finger. "But not us." Lily believed him. That was her first mistake. The summer before graduation began like every other summer. Until the phone call. It happened at 11:47 p.m. Ethan's phone rang while he was asleep. He almost ignored it. Then he saw the number. His father's private line. Ethan answered. "Hello?" There was no greeting. Only his father's hurried voice. "Ethan, listen carefully." Ethan sat up. "Dad?" "Don't leave your room." "What happened?" "I said don't leave." Something was wrong. Ethan could hear voices in the background. His father's breathing was heavy. Then his father whispered something that made Ethan's blood run cold. "They found out." "Who?" "The people we've been hiding from." Ethan stood. "What are you talking about?" "I don't have time to explain." His father's voice broke. "Take your mother and leave through the back door." "Dad, where are you?" Silence. Then— A loud crash. Ethan heard his father shout. The call ended. "Dad?" He called again. No answer. Again. Nothing. Ethan ran downstairs. His mother was already awake. The moment she saw his face, she knew. "What happened?" "We have to leave." "Where is your father?" Ethan swallowed. "I don't know." Before his mother could answer, headlights appeared outside the house. A black car stopped near the gate. Then another. His mother grabbed his arm. "Don't go near the window." "What is happening?" She looked terrified. "Ethan, you need to listen to me." A loud bang came from outside. His mother flinched. "We are leaving now." "But Lily—" His mother froze. Ethan knew exactly what she was thinking. "Lily cannot know." "What?" "If they know about Lily, she could be in danger." Ethan shook his head. "No. I have to warn her." His mother grabbed him. "You cannot go." "She's waiting for me." "Your life is in danger!" "I promised her." His mother's eyes filled with tears. "Sometimes promises have to be broken to keep someone alive." Ethan didn't understand. Not then. He only knew that Lily would be waiting for him beneath the old oak tree the next morning. And he had promised he would always come. At sunrise, Lily arrived at the tree. She carried two cups of coffee. One for herself. One for Ethan. She smiled when she saw the empty space beside her. "He'll be late," she whispered. Ten minutes passed. Then thirty. An hour. The coffee became cold. Lily checked her phone. No message. She called. The phone was switched off. She frowned. That wasn't like Ethan. He always answered her. Always. By noon, worry had replaced annoyance. She called again. Nothing. She tried his home. No answer. Then she saw a car passing on the road. For one second, she thought it was Ethan. She stood. "Ethan?" The car disappeared around the corner. Lily slowly sat back down. Something was wrong. She didn't know what. But deep inside, she felt it. This wasn't Ethan being late. This was something else. Three days passed. Then a week. No Ethan. No call. No message. Nothing. Rumors began spreading around Willow Creek. The Cole family had left town. Some people said Ethan's father had been involved in a business scandal. Others said the family had lost everything. Someone even whispered that Ethan had been sent away. But nobody knew where. Lily refused to believe any of it. "He would tell me." She repeated those words every day. "He promised." Then, one rainy evening, Lily found something beneath the old oak tree. A small wooden box. Her name was written on it. Lily. Her hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was the book Ethan had ruined nine years earlier. Except this one was new. Clean. Perfect. Tucked inside was a note. Lily unfolded it with shaking fingers. Only one sentence was written. I'm sorry. Please don't look for me. Her heart broke. She read it again. Then again. There had to be more. There had to be an explanation. Ethan wouldn't leave her like this. He wouldn't. She turned the paper over. Nothing. But as she lowered it, something caught her eye. A tiny dark mark at the bottom of the page. It looked like a fingerprint. Beside it was a single word. RUN. Lily's breath caught. She looked around the empty hill. For the first time, the old oak tree didn't feel safe. It felt like someone was watching her. Then her phone rang. Unknown number. She hesitated before answering. "Hello?" No one spoke. "Ethan?" Silence. Then a man's voice came through. "Stop looking for him." Lily's heart pounded. "Who are you?" "You don't know what you're getting yourself into." "Where is Ethan?" The man was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "If you care about him, forget he ever existed." The call ended. Lily stood beneath the old oak tree, staring at the phone. Rain began falling around her. She should have been afraid. Instead, she felt something stronger. Anger. Because whoever had taken Ethan had made one mistake. They had left Lily with questions. And Lily had never been good at walking away from unanswered questions. She looked at the old promise carved into the tree. Ethan + Lily. Her fingers traced the words. "You promised you'd come back." Her voice shook. "So I'm going to find out why you didn't." She didn't know it yet, but that decision would change the rest of her life. Because Ethan hadn't simply disappeared. Someone had taken him away. And years later, when he finally returned to Willow Creek, Lily would discover that the night he left was only the beginning of a secret that had been buried for years.
