Morgan Tory was complaining again, rambling on about the boy she had a crush on and the girl who 'stole' him from her. I roll my eyes and pretend to listen as she rants some more. "Honestly, Tory, I don't know why you even care, you know he's not your mate, so why does it matter?" I asked, exasperated . "Because!! I'm eighteen and I still haven't found my mate! Most wolves find their mate at 16! I'm a freak!" she wined, poking her lip out in a pout. "So… I'm almost twenty and haven't found mine, and not most wolves, just some" I said, rolling my eyes at her dramatics. "Ya but you're not even looking!" she says in a near shout. "I don't need a mate to define me... maybe you should think about that." I said, grinning now, because I knew my statement would make her angry. Before Tory could answer me, our mother came bursting through the door with a terrified look on her face. 'Girls run!! Go out the window and run to the forest, run and don't look back!'' She whispered and she shoved us towards the door. "What's going on" I asked, struggling against her grip as I tried to turn around. "There is no time, rouges have gotten inside the pack house and there are too many to fight off." Shocked Tory moved to do as she was told, shaking in fear. " No mom, I need to stay, I can fight!" I said "No! she said, her voice rising as she shoves me closer towards the window. "You need to take care of your sister, now go! " As we reached the window, our mother hugged us tightly. "I love you both so much" she whispered, struggling to keep the tears at bay "To the moon and back". She struggles out, kisses our foreheads and turns to go. As she turns she shifts to her wolf and disappeared through the door. We can hear the fight now, it gets louder as the seconds pass. Tory jumps out first and lands in the flower bushes below. She quickly climbs out of the bushes and hides in the shadows waiting for me. As I swung my legs over the window sill, I felt a searing pain in my side and I turned to see a deranged-looking rouge with blood dripping from his mussel standing behind me. I realized then he had shredded my side with his claws and was even now coiling to spring at me. Instinctively, a vicious growl rips from my throat. I launched myself out the window and landed in the bushes beside Tory . Grabbing her hand with one hand and my side with the other, we sprinted for the trees. Tears streamed from our eyes as we ran, knowing our parents were most likely dead and our lives would never be the same. I know they know where we are and we have no prayer of getting away, but maybe I can still save Tory. We get past the trees and shift to our wolves, putting as much distance between us and what was once our home, our safe haven. I can hear them chasing us, though our alpha blood gives us an advantage. I'm losing too much blood through the gash in my side and know I wont be able to keep the pace much longer. Taking a chance, we stopped at a huge tree. "Start climbing" I said, "and don't stop until you are completely hidden by the branches. " What are you going to do" she asked, shaking with fear. "I'm going to draw them away from you. When they are far enough away, climb down and run for the border. Beg the Blood Moon Pack for help and tell them what happened. They are our only chance, now go!" I said as I shoved her towards the tree. "No! she whispered "you could be caught. I cant loose you too!" She sobbed, clinging to me. " It's OK Tory, I'll be alright. I'm the strongest warrior in the pack, remember? Just be strong and send help, now go!" I said, shoving her up the first branch and taking off again headed in the opposite direction Tory was going to go once she got the chance to run. I could hear them coming as I ran. Pushing as hard as I could, I raced through the trees in an attempt to pull them farther away from Tory so she could slip away. My breathing is coming in harsh breaths now. I held my side while blood poured through my fingers. I knew I wasn't going to make it much further as spots blurred my vision, so in one last attempt to stall for time, I shifted, spun on my heal and attacked.
