Morgan
“Why hasn’t she woken up?” I heard someone growl through the fog that my brain seemed to have wrapped around it.
“I’m sorry, Alpha, but I don’t know. The condition she was in when she got here was severe. With all the broken bones, internal bleeding and cuts her body suffered, that alone should have killed her. Added to that, she had enough silver and wolfsbane in her system to kill an entire pack. She must have an extremely strong wolf to have survived this much damage to her system for three months. I don’t know when, or even if, she will wake up. I wish I had a better answer for you alpha, I’m sorry.”
Are they talking about me? Struggling through the fog, I try to open my eyes, but they feel like they have been glued shut. Next, I try to move, focusing on my fingers. I struggle to move them. Why is this so hard?
“Morgan? Can you hear me?” I must have gotten them to move because someone was talking to me.
Suddenly, I felt sparks shooting up my arm from my hand. The sensation seems to be enough to help me break through my subconscious and c***k my eyes open, only to close them against a blindingly bright light.
“Turn off that light.” The person next to me growls, and the light disappears from my face.
Cautiously, I opened my eyes again, looking around me. I’m obviously in some kind of a hospital room, the ceiling is white and the walls are a dull gray. I can smell antiseptic mixed with the most amazing scent, like the woods mixed with rain. Turning my head towards the person holding my hand, I saw the most handsome man I had ever seen. He had golden brown hair that was a little too long, brushing the collar of his shirt, and falling across his forehead, giving him a boyish look. Bright piercing blue eyes that seemed to take in every detail at once stared into mine, and it looked as if he hadn’t shaved in several days. He wore faded jeans and a black t-shirt that stretched tight across his muscled chest and biceps.
The moment my eyes met his, my vision blurred for a moment, and my wolf spoke for the first time in two and half months.
“Mate” she says, her voice sounding weak in my head.
“Desirae? Are you OK?” I asked her, worried, and relieved, for a while I had been worried the rouges had managed to kill her with all the chemicals they had pumped into me.
“I’m alright Morgan, I’m sorry I couldn’t answer you for the last three months. I had to use everything I had to keep us alive until mate could find us.”
“It’s OK, thank you for saving us.” I said.
“Morgan?” Alexander says with his eyebrows drawn together, and I realized I had been staring at him the whole time I talked to my wolf.
“What happened to your eyes?” he asked before I could answer him.
“what do you mean?” I asked, surprised at how scratchy and hoarse my voice sounded.
Getting up, he poured a glass of water and helped me take a sip, reminding me how weak I was.
“when you looked at me, they turned violet.” He says, rubbing circles on the back of the hand he was holding, causing more sparks to shoot up my arm.
“That’s new,” I said, surprised.
“They are your wolf eyes” Desirae says.
“They are usually blue” I said, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.
“What do you mean, they are usually blue; your eyes are green.” He asks, confused.
“Our eyes changed color because we found our true mate.” Desirae says softly.
“No, my wolf eyes are usually blue.” I told Alexander absent-mindedly.
“I think you are confusing, mate” Desirae says amused.
Turning my head, I focused my attention on Alexander. He was staring at my face with a very confused expression covering his face. That’s when I remembered all wolves have the same colored eyes as their human only brighter. My pack is so used to my eyes I don’t have to explain it very often, not to mention I tend to hide that part of myself from most people. In fact, the only people who know the reason behind my eyes are my family, and Damien, the Alpha of the Dark Moon Pack.
“It’s a long story, I would like to tell you, but it needs to be when we are completely alone.” I told him quietly, my eyes going to the door, where the doctor stood waiting for us to acknowledge his presence.
“I assume you are the doctor who has been taking care of me while I was unconscious?” I asked him.
“Yes Luna, my name is Dr. Jack Marcum. How are you feeling? If it’s alright I would like to ask a few questions now that you are awake.” He says while walking to my bedside.
“That’s fine, but first why did you call me Luna?” I asked.
“Because you are my mate, therefore the Luna of my pack,” Alexander answered for him.
Turning towards him, I raised an eyebrow. “While you are my mate, I have not agreed to be your Luna, I have a responsibility to my pack. With the death of my parents, I am the next in line to be Alpha, no matter what I want, I have to put my pack first.” I say, my voice shaking with the mention of my parents.
Closing his eyes, Alexander ran his thumb over the back of my hand. “I’m sorry I didn’t think about that, when you are released, we can talk about it more and maybe between the two of us we can come up with a solution that will benefit us all.”
Smiling, I squeezed his hand. “I’d like that,” I said, then turned to the doctor.
“You can start now” I told him with an encouraging smile.
Turning towards Alexander, he smiled and motioned towards the door, “Alpha, if you would wait outside for a moment.” Frowning, Alexander moved to do as he asked, when my voice stopped him.
“No, he is fine in here, I have nothing to hide from him and I am sure he has been in here the entire time I have been out anyway.” I said with a half-smile.” Besides, my wolf won’t stop growling in my head and its very distracting.”
Both Dr. Marcum and Alexander laugh, while Alexander settles himself back in his chair, taking my hand in his again, needing contact as much as I did.
“So, your wolf is conscious and seems to be OK?” Dr. Marcum asks with his eyebrows up.
“Yes, though her voice is weak, and she seems to tire out easily right now.”
“It’s a miracle she survived at all with the amount of drugs in your system” he says, almost in awe.
“She had to direct all of her energy towards keeping us both alive during our captivity. They injected me with a daily dose of wolfsbane and silver in order to keep me chained to the wall.”
Alexander's hand holding mine tightens as I explain. Looking in his direction, I begin to rub circles on the back of his hand and he relaxes his grip.
“How do you know what they injected you with? I mean you’re right, but did they tell you?” Marcum asked.
“They each have a distinct feeling when it enters your body”, I answered him with a half-smile.
“Wait, have you been injected with these before?” Alexander asks, obviously not liking the thought of it.
“It was part of my training, in order to know how to fight it, or treat it, you have to know what exactly you are injected with.” I answered, still rubbing circles in his hand to help keep him calm.
“You are healing faster than is normal, even with the silver and wolfsbane in your system. I can’t find a reason for it.” Dr. Marcum says.
“That’s normal for me, I have always been a fast healer. I rarely have to go to the doctor for anything.” I answered, smiling at the astonished look on Dr. Marcum’s face.
“How is that possible? He asks.
“It’s a long story, one I’m not comfortable discussing as of this moment,” I answered.
“Can I ask why?” he asked, frowning.
“I don’t know you” I answered, with an amused smirk.
“Do you have any other questions you need to ask?” I asked before he could continue his questioning about my healing abilities.
Sighing, he shuffles through the papers in the file he’s holding and grumbles about my lack of cooperation. “I have one more question I have to ask, and I need an answer to it.”
Raising one eyebrow, I waited in silence for him to get on with it.
“I gave you a full examination when Alpha Alexander brought you here, but he would not allow me to check for s****l assault, so I need to know if you were harmed in that way.” He says while scrutinizing my face.
Beside me, Alexander lets out a low growl and tenses up, his muscles tight and rigid. “No, they tried but were unable to contain me well enough to get close enough.” I answer quietly, as my skin flushes red in embarrassment and anger.
Alexander relaxes next to me and begins to rub my hand, soothing some of the anger and embarrassment away. I smiled my thanks to him and turned back to the doctor. “Is there anything else?” I asked wearily.
“Not for now.” He says “I’ll come and check on you soon.”
“When can I leave?” I asked, stopping him as he turned to leave.
As soon as we get all the wolfsbane and silver flushed out of your system, I’ll see what I can do about releasing you.” He says once again, turning to leave.
“I have one more question” Alexander spoke up for the first time since the doctor started questioning me.
Turning, Dr. Marcum waited to hear what Alexander wanted. “When I found Morgan, my wolf claimed her as our mate, but when I said it out loud, she said she didn’t feel anything, what did that mean?” He asked.
“Hmm, the only thing I can reason out is the amount of drugs in her system repressed her wolf to the point she was unable to feel the mate bond until we flushed some of the wolfsbane and silver out of her system.” He answered, frowning.
“I feel it now” I said quietly, squeezing his hand gently.
Smiling, his eyes met mine, and it was like he was the only person in the room. Slowly he leans towards me, his eyes moving to my lips, causing me to lick them unconsciously. Just as our lips are about to touch Dr. Marcum clears his throat, and just like that, the moment is gone. Letting out a growl, Alexander turned to him, glaring. “What?”
“If you don’t need anything more, I’ll take my leave,” he says with an amused smile on his face.
“We don’t need anything else, thank you for caring for me.” I said, smiling, ignoring the growl coming from my mate.
Bowing his head, the doctor walked out of my room, closing the door behind him.
