By the time they returned to the Froste Mansion, the sun had scattered the morning rays all over the horizon.
The grand doors opened without delay as Albert stepped inside, soaked to the bone, mud-streaked, and visibly shaken. The guards froze for only a moment at the sight of the unconscious girl in his arms before quickly stepping aside.
“Where is Alpha Arthur?” Albert demanded, his voice strained.
“In the study,” one of them replied immediately.
Albert did not wait.
Each step he took echoed through the vast halls as he made his way toward the study, his grip tightening slightly around the girl as though afraid she might disappear if he let go.
When he finally reached the door, he did not knock.
He pushed it open.
Inside, Arthur Froste stood by the window, exactly as he had before, his tall figure outlined against the dim light filtering through the glass.
He did not turn immediately.
But he already knew.
Albert stepped forward, his breathing uneven as he spoke.
“She jumped,” he said, his voice hoarse. “Off the cliff… into the river.”
A brief silence filled the room.
Arthur’s hand, which had been idly spinning his phone, came to a stop.
“And yet…… she’s alive,” Albert continued, swallowing hard in the end.
That was when Arthur turned, but his eyes narrowed slightly, a very subtle change in his expression that Albert noticed, enough for him to shiver in fear.
Arthur’s sharp, cold gaze landed on the unconscious girl in Albert’s arms.
“Put her there and call the doctor,” Arthur commanded him coldly, still standing at the same point.
His fingers tightened their grip on the phone, but there was no change in his demeanour.
Albert did what he was asked to do.
He put Skye on the couch gently, scared that he would hurt her more if he got rough.
He had already mind-linked the pack doctor and their friend, Colton Webb.
Arthur could scent wolfsbane mixed in her faint smell.
She smelled like a mix of Orris and Hyrax.
But he also knew that he was the only one who could smell this scent on her.
Other people said that she smelled like roses and cardamom.
The heavy silence in the room suffocated Albert, but he didn’t dare to make any sound.
Arthur slowly approached the couch.
Every step that he took was deliberately slow. Albert knew that Arthur had no interest in women, especially in his chosen mate, this mute girl.
He still didn’t know why Arthur agreed to take Skye as his chosen mate when he could have had any powerful she-wolf.
When Arthur was asked, he only said that controlling a mute was easy and that it saved him from unnecessary conversations and arguments.
“Do you think it’s her wolf that kept her alive?” Arthur asked Albert when he stopped near the couch.
Albert gulped hard before answering Arthur.
“In my opinion, it must be her wolf, Alpha. The river was like a beast on the hunt, and after falling from that height, the chance of survival of a human is less than 5%, and she also has wolfsbane in her system.”
Arthur’s jaw clenched, but Albert didn’t notice that.
A knock on the door made Arthur move away from the couch.
Colton entered with two nurses, having all the supplies that they could need.
“For how long has she been out?” he asked Albert hurriedly while running in the couch’s direction.
“Ummmmm….. I… I don’t know. We found her after the storm ended,” Albert answered hesitantly, not looking in Arthur’s direction.
Colton grimaced but started taking Skye's vitals.
The wounds had stopped bleeding, but they weren’t healing as they should.
Colton already knew the reason. So, he asked the nurses to clean Skye’s wounds with disinfectant as she was still covered with mud, making it hard for him to assess all her wounds.
Arthur watched them working on Skye.
On the surface, he was cold, but inside his heart, he was furious.
They dare touch what’s his.
They will pay the price.
“They called her parents, too,” Albert spoke softly, closing the distance between him and Arthur.
Arthur didn’t ask, but Albert knew very well.
“They…. They also said the same thing,” Albert added, whispering.
Arthur didn’t react, but the coldness in his gaze intensified.
“Of course. She has no value for them now,” he remarked coldly.
Albert sucked in a breath but didn’t comment.
It was known to everyone that Skye was given to Arthur as his chosen mate as Arthur’s beast, Grimm, had killed four chosen mates in the past.
Arthur’s fated mate died in a rogue’s attack five years ago.
After that, his family chose mates for him from the powerful families in exchange for a strong alliance and financial aide.
But after the death of his fourth mate, Arthur was labeled as a cursed wolf.
But no one can say it openly because Arthur was the strongest beast in their world.
Even the king doesn’t show his authority in front of Arthur.
Six months ago, the council chose Skye's younger sister, Gloria Ashborn, as Arthur's mate, but the family sent mute Skye Ashborn instead.
The matter of swiping the bride was enough for the Frostbite Pack to start a war against Skye’s original Pack, the Hollow Shadow Pack, but Arthur didn’t take any action against them.
However, he withheld the promised business projects as a form of punishment for changing the chosen one.
“I heard that one of your distant aunts adored Skye?” Arthur suddenly asked Albert.
Albert’s heart skipped a beat, but he nodded in response.
“Aunt Roma Frankfurt, my mother’s distant cousin,” Albert confirmed.
“Call them tomorrow and ask them if they are ready to register Skye in their household. They can get the Coastline Project.” Arthur instructed indifferently, but Albert’s eyes widened in shock.
“You… you want to move her name from her original family?” he asked in a shocked voice.
Arthur’s corners of the mouth curled up slightly.
“What’s the use of having such a family to her? She doesn’t need them either,” Arthur remarked casually and took a deep breath.
“Damn. Her willpower to live must be strong.” Colton remarked, getting their attention.
“She….. she was beaten badly, breaking her right thigh, her right hip, and her ankle. They stabbed her arms and lower abdomen with a silver knife. H… her survival is nothing but a miracle, alpha.” Colton explained her injuries grimly.
Albert gasped aloud in shock but lowered his head immediately.
“And …. And she ran with all those injuries.” Still, Albert couldn’t help but mumble to himself.
“Her wolf?” Arthur asked coldly.
Colton sighed and slowly stood up, moving in their direction.
“Barely alive. She used her strength to heal those injuries to the extent that Luna could run away. With wolfsbane in her system, she took a grave risk on her life.” Colton replied to Arthur, his eyebrows knitted so tightly that they formed a straight line there; his dark brown eyes were filled with rage and helplessness.
“Let’s go,” Arthur ordered Albert and walked out the door, leaving Colton to treat Skye.
Arthur didn’t even spare a glance at Skye when he went out of the room.
Albert glanced at Skye, who was on the verge of dying at any time, before closing the door after exiting the study.
“Where are they?” Arthur asked him coldly, moving in the opposite direction from the living room.
“In the basement, Alpha,” Albert replied to him calmly.
