~WREN~
"Stop it! Let me go!" I scream and try to get her hands off me.
Alistair holds on and starts chanting some words. Flashes cross in front of me as I try to look at the images. It's too painful and kneeling there, I am helpless. I give up fighting and close my eyes tightly.
Slowly, the block I have been feeling in my head lifts up. I hear a voice. It is a woman's voice at first before a male voice follows. I don't recognize them. A child laughs making me open my eyes slowly.
"Remember who you are!" Alistair's voice reaches me in waves as I explore the unfolding events around me.
"Come on Maia. It's time to go inside," the woman states sweetly to the young girl.
"Okay, Mommy!"
I follow her jumpy movement as she rushes toward the woman and man. She looks my way before passing and smiles. Her hair is silver and the moment she turns to me, I notice the grey eyes. That's the look I see in the mirror every day whenever I look at myself. Only that this one is younger and more at peace. I gasp in realization and turn quickly. The three however disappear. I want to call out to them but it's too late. Alistair lets go of me and everything fades away. I gasp loudly and sit back panting.
"Are those my real parents?" I ask when I finally catch my breath.
"Yes, they were your birth parents."
The word 'were' reverberates in my head. I have never questioned why I was adopted and just then I realize how arrogant my foster parents must think I am. I don't know why. However, questions about my real parents started weighing me down over the last year. Maybe because I have been at the peak of puberty or whatever. I just haven't asked out loud. I guess I'm just scared of the answer but now I don't think I want to stay in the dark anymore.
"What happened?"
"You were young. You had no control over your powers," she explains softly. Something twists within me like a sharp knife. Somehow I feel that what she is about to tell me is not going to be easy. "They were trying to protect you by bringing you here. On the way, there was an accident."
"Wh... what kind of accident?" I ask in fear.
"Your father lost control. The car ran off the highway." Alistair sighs heavily. "They didn't survive."
"I d... I don't remember," I shake my head and look away trying to access that memory. Alistair doesn't say anything and after a minute, I look at her. "Did I...?" My lip trembles as words get lost in my mouth. I can't bring myself to ask it out loud. The thought of it is too painful.
"It wasn't your fault, Maia."
"Wren! Just call me Wren, please," I swallow guiltily.
She nods, "Alright, Wren." I sigh heavily. "The creatures you saw yesterday have been looking for you from the moment you were born."
My heart races dangerously. I remember the whispers, the urge to step forward in that field. It was almost like they were calling me to them.
"I requested them to let you grow up in this academy but your mom was not willing to give you up at such a young age. So, we found an alternative." At this moment, I don't even know what to say. Alistair goes on. "Spells to keep you hidden and give you a chance to grow with your parents."
A tear rolls out of my eye but I don't bother to wipe it off. Alistair continues.
"As you grew, so did your powers. It's a beacon that signals to every being that is looking for you and on the day of the accident they found you. Your parents died trying to keep you safe from them."
I shake my head slowly, "Why are you telling me this? I killed them. I am the reason they are not here today!"
"You were three years old, Maia. " I turn to her with disapproval. I don't know what that changes. I am a murderer and a part of me has always felt that. "Wren," she corrects herself. "I am not telling you this to make you hate yourself. I am telling you so you can know where you come from and what you have to do to be ready for your future."
"What is a future without a past?" I ask. "I don't remember that part of me at all. Why don't I remember?"
"I had to erase your memory, Wren." My mouth hangs low in shock. "You needed to be safe and the only way to keep you safe until you were old enough was by suppressing your powers and wiping the memory of the person you were fourteen years ago."
Everything begins to make sense now. I have always felt like a part of me is missing. I have blamed it on being adopted but now I see the truth. I don't know what to say to her. Instead of feeling a weight lift off of me, I suddenly feel grounded, pinned down by baggage.
She takes my broken hand and heals it with a spell. It feels as good as new within seconds.
"If you can do that, why didn't you heal Sage?" I ask in surprise.
"It works differently for everyone." She offers her hand to help me up. "Come on, go clean up. Breakfast is in an hour."
An hour and some minutes later, I walk sluggishly towards the school cafeteria. Everyone else is already gone, even Sage. I didn't want anyone's company so I lagged behind deliberately. My mind is gone. I can't stop thinking about everything Alistair said to me. How am I supposed to live with the thought that I am the reason my birth parents are dead? Hell, maybe it is better if those beings supposedly looking for me get me and kill me. I deserve it.
Someone bumps into me in the hallway bringing me back to my senses.
"Watch where you are going!" A werewolf shouts at me angrily.
Well, maybe I bumped into them. I don't know, my mind is hazy.
"Sorry," I mumble almost inaudibly
"Stupid abomination!" he spits.
I ignore him and keep walking. It's too early to start a fight. A bump behind me however makes me turn around. The guy who just shouted at me is pinned against the wall, his feet dangling in the air. My eyes land on his attacker and a surprise gasp escapes. Roman.
"What did you just call her?" His voice booms as his hand closes in on the guy's throat. "What the f**k did you just call her!"
