CHAPTER 1
~WREN~ "Welcome to the Luminary Heights Elite School for all Supernaturals and counterparts!" Those are the only words I hear from the chirpy school guide I have been assigned to on my first day in my new school. Sage. Her name is easy to remember because it reminds me of my favorite part of the day. Plants. My mind however decides to find an escape from her overly enthusiastic voice as I look around me. The hallway is filled with different kinds of supernaturals. I can only tell them apart because of their different uniforms that I spent part of the last half hour learning about. Werewolves wear jungle green, vampires are in red, and witches are in black which is kind of cliche. Purple is for the ghouls who are easier to identify because of their pale skins, the fairies get the white and silver. I guess because they are considered the purest of the species or whatever. I'm not really keen on what they all mean because all I can think of is how I got here. "Wren?" Sage's voice alerts me back to the present. I look up to meet her eyes. "I hope you are loving it so far?" she poses it as a question. "Mm-hmm," I mumble back as we continue walking. "It will take a few days to adjust but you can always come to me for anything," she offers. Once again I nod my response and adjust my backpack on my shoulder. Right. That reminds me... I'm the only human in a whole sea of supernaturals and my shouting yellow uniform isn't helping my case as everyone has eyes on me. As long as I have known, I am human and according to the stories I have been told, my parents were major counterparts of this institution which I'm guessing is why I scored this opportunity. I didn't know them since they died when I was four years old. I have lived the entire thirteen years as a charity case for my foster family. That is until this letter came offering me a chance at this school which they embraced too quickly, almost as if they were glad to get rid of me. I don't understand how I got it. I'm not the best when it comes to sports, my overall grade in school is not appealing and I have never been a team leader. In short, I suck. I guess I should be glad to get away from home where I thought I was never going to leave. What I am not sure about is how I will adjust to this new curriculum. Of course, I was aware there were supernaturals but I never thought I'd have to interact with them, let alone spending two years of what was left of my high school with them. I feel odd. I feel lost and I don't think I'm ever going to fit in here. But what choice do I have? It's either here or drop out since according to my foster parents, they can no longer afford to pay for my school fees and apparently, I need help. This came after they found my diaries filled with morbid drawings and worrying contents of my recurring nightmares. I'm not sure how this school is going to help me but it's not like I have a choice. Sage leads me into a large hall where more students are having lunch. We stop at the door looking around. More like following her voice and eyes as she explains more of what to expect. "The A-level students have lunch before everyone else. That is, the juniors and seniors in other words. So, this is us," she states excitedly. "Come on." I follow her and join the long line of students at the cafeteria buffet. I can feel their eyes burrowing into my skin deeply but I try to ignore them. Supernaturals and humans are not enemies but that doesn't mean I'm not a little freaked out being here. At least the line is moving fast so I don't have to stand there for long. Just before our turn comes, a group of boys walk past us and plant themselves right in front of Sage. Rude! I utter inwardly as I feed my eyes on them. They are wearing green which means they are werewolves. What appalls me most is the fact that Sage doesn't even seem bothered. She steps back to give them enough room. I manage to hold my tongue until they have all served themselves then turn to Sage. "What was that?" My anger is clear in my voice even though I try to clip it. She smiles, "Well, you can actually talk?" Her sarcasm doesn't amuse me. "Those are the big five—the most powerful group of werewolves in the school under the command of Alpha Roman Grayson who is..." The room falls into complete silence before she can finish her statement. Well, maybe she does. I don't hear it because my focus is carried away to the person who just made everyone lose their tongues. He stands at the door, a figure of full authority as he looks around with a powerful set of deep golden eyes. His arms are crossed over his chest, he is wearing a tight green sweater and skin-tight jeans highlighting his thighs. His hair is cut short on both sides and the longer middle portion is tied in a short high ponytail. I'm guessing he is wearing such revealing clothes to display his highly achieved muscles probably meant to impress everyone. Well, I'm not immune. I'm curious about why he holds such an effect on everyone but the moment he turns his gaze towards my direction. I freeze and hold the stare. My stomach turns and rolls as a wave of excitement creeps up and tightens around my chest. He is gorgeous! "Wren!" Sage's voice alerts me as the guy starts walking towards us. Does she sound shaken? Or terrified? I turn to her and confirm my guess. She is terrified. I don't know why but I guess I'm about to find out. She leans in closer and continues. "That's Alpha Roman Grayson and you can't hold eye contact with him!" "Why?" I furrow my brows in confusion. Sage looks over my shoulder briefly and doesn't say anything to me. I am aware that the guy is behind me so I turn around slowly and find his gaze rooted on me. Talk about male domination! I don't know if he expects me to step aside to let him through but I hold my ground. He stares at me blankly for two minutes straight which makes me question whether I have something on my face. He is intimidating but I hold the stare. No one like him ever stops to look at someone like me twice. If they do, it is to bully or insult me. If he is anything like the guys in my former school, I don't expect less. His silence however makes me question everything in my head. "Aren't you going to say something insulting to gratify yourself while everyone laughs at me?" I ask breaking the intense silence. "I know that's how it works with guys like you." Several gasps spread through the room but my gaze remains on him.
