Prologue
Prologue Ava Ten years in the past “I have to do it. I have to do it now.” Ava kept the constant mantra going in her mind. The truck she was in finally stopped, as she shifted in the bed. She heard the distinct sound of both truck doors opening and shutting. Their voices lingered by the truck bed for a while. They must have thought she was still knocked out or they just didn’t give a damn if she heard their disgusting conversation. After everything they had already done to her, they were arguing over whether not to use her one more time before they discarded her. Ava had no idea what ‘discard’ meant, but she didn’t want to stick around to find out. She didn’t want to be in the back of the truck one second longer than what was necessary. She was so battered and bruised she wasn’t even sure she would be able to hold her body upright, let alone run. Come hell or high water, she was going to try. As the voices faded off and the sound of gravel crunching under their oversized bodies drifted off, she took a deep breath. Then she slowly made her way to the back of the truck bed and peeked over the top. Just as she had suspected, she was alone for the time being. Careful of her injuries, she slipped herself up and over the tailgate, easing herself onto the gravel. Barefoot and in tattered bloody clothes, she took off. The gravel road was in front of what appeared to be a bar. Ava didn’t take more than a minute to look at it before she took off as fast as she could manage down the road. Her ribs were in excruciating pain, making it hard for her take deep breaths. Her s*x was sore from their abuse, and her legs were trembling under her own weight. Still she pushed on. The bar seemed to be out in the middle of nowhere. Every time she would round a turn she’d pray that there would be some sort of civilization there, but there wasn’t. Just more road twisting up ahead of her under the moonlit sky. Time seem to suspend during her escape, and even though Ava felt like she had been walking for hours, she knew it hadn’t been that long. Every noise frightened her, but the noise she had been dreading the most chilled her to her bones. The sound of truck tires on the gravel. Ava dipped into the woods and ducked behind a tree. A minute later, a truck came into view, but it was coming from the opposite direction. Ava had a split second to make a decision. The odds of the people in the truck being shifters were pretty good, but the odds of them being as sadistic as the two she had just escaped from seemed rare. With nothing less to lose, she pushed herself out onto the road and waved the truck down. Tears poured down her face. She hadn’t shed a single one throughout her entire ordeal, but the thought of being rescued had set them free. The truck skidded to a stop dust flew everywhere. Her heart pounded as the doors opened on the truck. Her life would change based solely on the occupants of the truck. “Please let them save me.”
