The next morning, before work, the three men called me to follow them out to the forest, where Nathan brought us to a halt just within the border. “Okay, Jem, this is my offer of compromise. Sean isn’t ecstatic over it, but it’s better than leaving you to your own devices.”
I glanced at Sean before gesturing Nathan to go on.
“You are not to go into the forest ...” As I stiffened to protest, he held up a finger. “You are not to go into the forest without first calling one of us, to ensure we’re on our way home. So, you can only go in at the end of the day, or if we’re returning for lunch. That way, you won’t be in here long, and we’ll come and find you. You with me so far?”
My lips curved. “Yes.”
“You must take your mobile with you and double check you still have it before entering.
