We may have taken one down, but there were still three to go, and they were approaching. With a growl, Sean took off—not in the direction of the nearing wolves, though, but to the side, circling around on them. Josh and I chased his disappearing hind. Unlike them, we knew where we were going. Once out of their path, we slowed to minimise our noise and enhance the chance of taking them by surprise. With deft steps, we stuck to the shadows, ears pricked. The other pack made no effort to conceal their trampling as they blazed through the trees, and I followed their route with ease. Stepping onto their course, I lowered my nose, sniffed the ground. When I lifted to the stares of Sean and Josh, communication somehow passed between us, and we resumed the path toward our foe. Roars rebounded
