Elara Blackwood
Chapter One: The Howling Wind
The full moon cast an eerie glow over the forest, its silver light weaving through the thick branches and spilling onto the ground below. The woods were silent, except for the occasional hoot of an owl or the crunch of a distant animal treading lightly on brittle leaves. I am a princess of the Lupine Court, standing in the clearing, my keen wolf senses drinking in every sound, every scent. Tonight is my eighteenth birthday, a night meant for celebration. But instead of joy, I feel a heavy weight pressing on my chest.
I close my eyes, inhaling deeply, my senses catching the familiar mix of earthy moss and aged pine that lingered in the air. My father had always told me that a true royal could find peace even in the wildest parts of the forest. Yet peace eludes me tonight. Because tonight, my life would shift in ways I can't fully control.
From birth, I had known I was bound to an ancient pact between my family and the ruling alpha clan of the southern wolves. My life had always been woven with responsibility and duty, stitched tightly to my birthright. But now, that birthright has come to claim my freedom as well. My marriage has been arranged to solidify an alliance with the Westwilde Pack, a family as old and as royal as my own.
Ronan, my betrothed, seemed like a good match on paper. He was known for his strength, his loyalty to his pack, and his charm. I had met him only once before tonight, during a formal court meeting. He had seemed respectful, even kind. His hazel eyes had held mine with an intensity that made my skin prickle, and for a moment, I had thought perhaps…perhaps there could be something real between us.
But tonight, as I walked the halls of my family’s estate, dressed in flowing midnight blue with a thin silver circlet over my dirty blonde long hair, I hear voices just beyond the grand hall. The thick oak door had muffled much, but my heightened senses didn’t miss a thing.
“…you think she’s going to bend to your will? That she’ll just accept you as her husband without a fight?” It was his father’s voice, gruff and dismissive.
Ronan’s voice had been soft, almost calculating. “I’m not worried about what she thinks, Father. I’m going to shape her into the woman I need her to be. She might be a princess, but a queen knows when to yield.”
The words stung like a venomous bee sting. My stomach clenches as I listen, every syllable winding tighter around my heart. The promise of kindness I had seen in Ronan’s gaze earlier now felt like a trick, a mask meant to make me fall easily into place. And perhaps that was the worst of it—that he saw me as something to mold, rather than a partner, a friend.
I turn from the clearing, my vision sharpening as I glance back at the lights flickering from the hall windows in the distance. The pull of duty was still strong, urging me back, but the pull of my own spirit—wild, untamed—is fighting against it.
A soft howl echoed in the distance. I straighten, my eyes narrowing as my wolf’s blood thrummed to life within me. I had been born for more than this, more than a quiet life shaped to fit another’s will. I am Elara, of the bloodline of the Silverclaw, a princess destined to lead, not to yield.
As I walk back to the estate, I make a silent promise. Whatever happened after tonight, I would not be merely Ronan’s bride, or my father’s obedient daughter. I will be myself—a woman who would bend to no one’s will but my own. And if my future husband wants to reshape me, he would have to contend with the fire that lay dormant beneath my skin, waiting for its moment to ignite.
Chapter Two: The Bond of Brothers
I slip quietly through the halls of my family’s estate, my bare feet moving soundlessly across the polished stone. The deep shadows and flickering candlelight made it easy to move undetected. I make my way to the east wing, where my brothers’ rooms are clustered together. I knew they’d be awake, packing for their early departure tomorrow.
I tap softly on my brother Raik’s door.
“Elara?” Raik’s golden eyes flickered with curiosity and then concern. He pulls me into the room quickly, closing the door behind us. “What are you doing here so late?”
Behind him, my other brother, Finn, looks up from a bag he was stuffing with clothes. He tilts his head, catching my expression. “What happened?”
I take a deep breath, struggling to steady my voice. “I need to get away. From here. From this…marriage.”
Raik raises a brow, crossing his arms. “I take it you heard something tonight?”
I nod, my hands clenching at my sides. “Ronan was talking with his father. They think I’ll just bow to his will, like some… tame wolf. He plans to ‘make me’ the woman he wants me to be. He doesn’t even see me as a person, just as something to shape.”
Finn’s face darkened, his jaw clenched. “That arrogant bastard,” he mutters. “He clearly has no idea who he’s dealing with.”
I give a small, grim smile. “I won’t let them cage me, Finn. But I don’t know how to escape this without causing a war between our families.”
Raik paced the room for a moment, deep in thought. Then he stopped suddenly, a spark in his eye. “Come with us.”
I blink I must have misheard him. “What?”
“Come with us to Alpha Training School,” Raik repeats, his voice more certain. “They wouldn’t expect you to be there, and it’ll buy you time to figure out your next move.”
I shake my head. “It’s an all-male school, Raik. If I’m found out, the Council could use it against Father. Besides, they’d never let me in.”
“Who said anything about letting you in?” Raik smirks. “You won’t go as Elara. You’ll go as a new student—a young male wolf, someone they haven’t met yet.”
Finn chuckles, shaking his head. “Raik, you’re insane. They’ll know the second she steps in.”
“Not if we’re careful,” Raik argues, giving me a mischievous grin. “It’ll take some work to disguise her, but it’s not impossible.”
I felt a thrill of excitement pulse through me. The idea was wild, dangerous…but it was a way out. “How would we even do it?”
“We’ll start with your hair,” Finn said, studying me thoughtfully. “It’s too long and obvious. You’ll need to cut it short, like ours.”
I reach up instinctively, fingers curling around the length of my hair. “Cut it? All of it?”
Raik shrugs. “It’ll grow back. Besides, you’re not just Elara for now. You’ll need a new name, a new walk, even a different way of talking. Everything.”
My heart pounds with the thrill of it. “I’ll do it.”
Finn’s expression softens. “Are you sure, Elara? This will be risky. Alpha training isn’t easy for any wolf, let alone someone trying to hide who they are.”
“I’d rather face the danger of training than live under Ronan’s control,” she said, steel in her voice. “I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Raik and Finn exchange a look, then both give a single, resolute nod.
“Alright, then,” Raik says. “From tomorrow morning on, you’re no longer Elara. You’re…Elian ..Eli for short.”
“Elian,” I repeat, feeling the name settle into my mind. I take a steadying breath. “Let’s do this.”
“First thing’s first,” Finn says, reaching for a pair of shears in his pack. “Say goodbye to your hair.”
I grin, determination lighting up my eyes.
