The date with Maverick was let’s say he tried to think out of the box. He took me to this restaurant that was outdoor but it was also at the outskirts of the city. But their meals were amazing and delicious, I wouldn’t complain about that. And on the plus side I was finally starting to adapt to the motorcycle rides, it wasn’t what I was used to and it felt nice trying new and different things. But now the weekend was over and it was the day of my interview and with the new day brought my nerves with it. I couldn’t even have breakfast.
Mateo walked into the kitchen rubbing his eyes. He looked at me, in my black pencil skirt, with a matching blazer and a formal blue shirt to match my stilettos. He smiled, “who know you owned a skirt?” He commented as he took the milk out of the fridge, “an official one at that.”
“I have skirts and dresses, I just choose not to wear them as I am comfortable with the sweatpants and jeans I wear.” I countered.
Mateo raised his hands in defeat, “no need to get defensive with me. I think you look great.” He took a seat, “where are you going dressed like that?”
“I have the interview today remember?” I asked as I tried to eat the banana I had picked out.
“Oh, that was today?” Mateo asked as he took a sip of the juice.
I sighed, “you went to another party again?” I asked.
He shrugged, “the party life just seems to call me.”
“You do know you are headed to thirty and you can’t just…” He held up a finger to my mouth.
He swallowed the drink in his mouth, then he stood up, “save that for your interview you’ll need it.” He said as he took the drink to his room, “good luck!” I heard him yell before his bedroom door shut.
Mateo had so many talents and a variety of things he could do but I felt like he didn’t care. I think a part of him just thought that there was no need to do anything, as he would have to run his parent’s repair shop but I don’t think his parents had the same idea.
I looked down at the unfinished banana, I cringed, threw it in the dustbin on my way out. I got to the tall building, I had done my research. It had almost thirty floors, with each department having its own floor and the CEO’s office being at the top floor. The CEO was this old guy who I heard was fierce, that I knew applying here was a long shot but I was trying anything. I was even surprised to have them call me back to this interview.
I approached the man that was at the reception desk, who told me where to go. I entered the elevators and as I passed each floor I could help but feel nervous and my mind was racing. What if it was a mistake and I wasn’t the one they wanted? It was going to be so shameful to have to be told that when I had my hopes up that I finally would be able to get a job.
I approached the CEO’s assistant after asking around, I was directed to her desk. “Hello…” I paused as I didn’t know her name.
“Ms. Sullivan.” She said.
“Ms. Sullivan, I have an appointment with the CEO today. Is he available?” I asked in the humblest way possible.
“You must be…” She looked through her tablet, “Ms. Maeve Thompson?”
I smiled, “that would be me.”
She pointed to a seat, “have a seat Mr. Gray will be with you shortly.” She said but I got the vibe that she didn’t seem to like me very much. I quickly brushed it aside, it was my first time here, I didn’t know anyone well enough to make a judgement but I was really hoping to get this job.
“Ms. Thompson, Mr. Gray will see you now.” Ms. Sullivan said as she led me to what I think was the boss’s office.
“Mr. Gray, Ms. Thompson is here for her appointment.” Ms. Sullivan announced to the man who was facing the window.
“Thank you Brianna.” He said without turning around.
Brianna walked out and immediately the doors closed behind her I couldn’t help but feel trapped, as though I was locked in here with someone or something that could murder me.
“So, Ms. Thompson you were here for an interview before, do you know why you didn’t get the job?” Mr. Gray asked and I could hear that voice seemed familiar but I couldn’t place it.
“I presumed it was because of my lack of experience considering the position that was to be filled.” I replied and immediately I finished he turned around to face me and I was shocked to see him. “Artemis?” I asked confused.
Recognition crossed his eyes, he didn’t seem please to see me though, “you are the Maeve Thompson that drew those plans?” He asked as if surprised that I was capable of that.
I immediately turned into defensive mode, “yes, I am.” I replied and it sounded defensive.
“I didn’t mean you couldn’t, I’m just surprised as when I met you, you work both as a waitress and a bartender.” Artemis commented.
I sighed, “the world hasn’t exactly been good to me so I do what I have to do to survive.” I replied.
I could feel a headache coming on top of being nervous, I mean this made it too complicated. I was hoping not to see this guy again but with him being my boss, it was going to be hard to do that. Why was this happening to me?
Artemis Gray
I had been hoping to see her again, she looked so different that when she was out and about and she seemed to be able to pull of the official and casual look perfectly. But I didn’t think the next time I would be seeing her was at my office, with her asking for a job. With her credentials, it only made me desire her more. A beautiful, intellectual woman. That was every man’s dream but not working with them.
I pulled her schematics of the new project, “what exactly inspired you to come up with this design?” I asked as now I was more curious about it that I was before.
“It is not only cost friendly, it’s also environmentally friendly.” She replied, “it has the least carbon footprint, while giving the consumer exactly what they desire.”
Wow, I thought, she was perfect. I cleared my throat as I tried to make sure to remain professional, “but we have done and tried dozens of schematics, this is purely theoretical are you sure it would be able to work when put into practice?” I asked.
“When I read your advertisement that you were looking for someone for the COO position and they should each have a design for what they assumed would be an effective improvement in the company’s design, I thought this was the best idea that you haven’t tried yet.” She said, “I went through your products over the years and I believe whoever designed them could have done a better job.”
Plus, she could challenge me and my work, it felt as if the universe sent her to me. “so, you believe your designs as what the company needs?”
“I believe that I could change a lot for this company. We could manage to still make profits while also causing less pollution.” She replied confidently.
I mean, she was perfect for the job and she would fit right in. Before I could say anything Zoey came walking through the door, seeing Maeve made me forget about her existence.
“Hey sweetie,” She said as she walked up to me, “I’m sorry to interrupt but I need you to take me somewhere.” She sat on my lap and I couldn’t help but feel like she was embarrassing me in front of Maeve.
“Zoey could we do that after I’m done with this meeting?” I asked.
She turned to look at Maeve, she covered her mouth then started to act embarrassed, “I didn’t see you there, I’m sorry.” She said as she waved at Maeve as she walked out, “I’ll let you finish up, I’ll be right outside.” She blew me a kiss then walked out.
I adjusted myself, “sorry for that. Where were we?” I asked.
“You have a girlfriend?” Maeve asked surprised.
I cleared my voice, “yes I do.”
“Yet you still agree to have s*x with me?” She asked again.
“You are the one who invited me to your place remember?” I responded.
“Yet you didn’t feel the need to say, hey, sorry but I have a girlfriend.” She replied.
I sighed, “let’s focus on the matter at hand, you are here for a job interview.”
“Which now I think I deserve to have considering you made me break my morals and I had s*x with a man who has a girlfriend.” Maeve said as she leaned back in her seat.
I chuckled, “you trying to blackmail me?” I asked.
She smirked, “no. I just know something that would be very scandalous for you, it could drop the company’s stocks, ruin your reputation and you’ll have to step down.”
This girl intrigued me.
I guess as I didn’t respond she assumed I wasn’t interested in her deal and she stood up to leave. “Wait.” I stopped her. I walked up to her and stood so close behind her, “I want you to know you are getting this job because I think you are qualified and not because of your half-ass threats, Maeve.”
She turned around and I realized maybe standing this close to her wasn’t such a good idea as I could smell her and with her lips so close to mine. I wanted to grab her and kiss her, reminding myself of the night we shared.
She smiled, “I’ll start tomorrow.” She said then she walked out.
