“Maeve! Let’s go.” Mateo yelled for me to get out of my room.
I went to meet him at the living room, he looked at me and snickered. “Let’s move.” He said as he walked to the door.
I ran after him, “I saw that. What was that?” I asked.
“Nothing. Let’s go.” Mateo said as he walked to the car.
“It’s because of what I’m wearing, right? Should I change? Should I wear something different?” I asked confused.
Mateo shook her head, “you look fine…you look like you.” He answered but he hesitated so I was sceptical about whether or not he’d like my outfit.
“You hesitated. Why… why did you hesitate?” I asked as I walked into the car.
“You look great. Now please let’s go before I become late.” Mateo said as he started the car up.
“I? I’m also going to this party that seemingly you didn’t want me to come.” I commented.
Mateo chuckled, “I definitely want you to come. Maverick definitely wants you here.” He whispered.
“Wait what?!” I asked surprised, “you are taking me there because your boss wants me there?”
“He likes you and he thinks you two could have the best chemistry together.” Mateo said.
I have to admit it wasn’t fun thinking that Mateo was trying to link me up with his boss but at the same time I felt I needed this before I went to work on Monday. It also felt a bit weird that I met Artemis again, it was supposed to be a one-night thing, he was an amazing lover, we had the most amazing time together but I also wasn’t expecting him to show up.
“Hey,” Mateo said, “you don’t have to worry about it. You don’t have to hang out with him if you don’t want to.” He assured me, “you won’t even have to see him if you don’t want to. The party is going to have a lot of people and it’s okay if you don’t want to see him.”
“Why would you assume I don’t want to see him?” I asked.
“Do you want to see him?” Mateo asked.
“Maybe, maybe not.” I answered, “let’s get to the party first then we’ll see what to do from there.”
Mateo shrugged then sighed, “I have friends there so I’m sorry if I won’t be able to hang around you all the time.”
“I don’t need babysitting. It’s a party and we should both have fun.” I said with a smile. Maybe I’ll get someone else to get my mind off of Artemis.
We got to the party, and Mateo wasn’t joking when he said there would be a lot of people. It didn’t look like an adult party but more like a college one. “Are you sure we aren’t at some random college party?” I asked Mateo as I got out of the car.
“It’s a bunch of people our age that know how to party so don’t be like you were in college, trying to act like a chaperone to everyone.” Mateo said as one of, who seemed to his friend, walked up to us.
“This is my friend, Maeve. Maeve this is Carl.” Mateo introduced me to his friend who smiled at me as he put his arm around me and walked me to the house.
“Mateo never told me he has a… hot friend.” Carl said and he also hesitated. I mean, did my clothes look that bad? I wondered.
I sighed, Mateo always thought I couldn’t have fun. Maybe I should show him how much fun I can have. I chuckled, “of course he wouldn’t he thinks I dress like a hobo.” I joked and they both laughed.
Immediately we walked into the house we were handed drinks in red solo cups. Mateo and Carl wondered off and I was left standing there confused, I guess Mateo did warn me that he won’t stick around. I started walking around trying to find something to do as I drunk, heavily.
I started to make friends, “so, what happened? Did you actually end up dating him?” I heard someone ask as I joined a few groups of friends. They looked at me as if I was out of place and I guess I was.
“Can we help you?” One of them asked.
I looked around to see who they were talking to and it turns out it was me. “I was just having a seat.” I said.
“Well, can you seat elsewhere? It seems kind of like you want to eavesdrop on our story.” Another lady said.
I scoffed, “the hell, what are we in high school where you don’t want to…” I was drunk and I wasn’t about to take any of this bullshit.
“Hey there beautiful. I have been looking for you everywhere.” I heard someone say as they helped me stand up.
It was Maverick and I could see all the girls where now batting their eyelashes. “Hey, you could seat with us.” The girl said.
This is high school, I thought scoffing. “No he won’t. You didn’t want me here so you don’t get to enjoy his company.” I rolled my eyes as I pulled Maverick away. Once we found some private space, I asked, “I heard you have a crush on me.” I smirked.
He chuckled, “what are we? Eight?”
“We have to be eight for you to have a crush on me?” I asked.
“No… I mean… that’s not what I meant.” He fumbled in his words.
I was having fun so I thought I might as well go along with it, “so what is it that you have on me?” I asked as I sipped my drink.
“I think you’re pretty.” He said.
“You think I’m pretty but I’m not?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.
“That’s not what I meant. I mean you are pretty and beautiful.” He struggled to explain but I couldn’t hold my laughter. He looked at me, “not cool making fun of me like that.”
“I was having fun.” I commented, “do you want to get out of here?” I asked.
“I would sure.” He agreed.
“Do you have a car though because I don’t want to leave Mateo stranded.” I said.
“I don’t have a car but I have a motorcycle.” He said unsure of himself.
“Even better.” I said as I dragged him out of the house. I walked a few steps when it hit me, I was drunk and I don’t think I remember where the door was.
“You don’t know where the entrance is, do you?” He asked.
I looked at him, smiled and I shook my head.
“I’ll lead then you’ll follow.” Maverick said as he took the lead.
We got to his motorcycle, he didn’t have an extra helmet so he gave me his. “Are you sure you want to give me this?” I asked.
“I’m sure. Where do you want to go?” He asked.
“Um… I don’t know. Let’s just drive around town. I want to get away from the drunk and mean people at this party.” I said as he helped me get on the motorcycle.
“Are you ready?” He asked.
I nodded. And off we went.
I have to admit being on a motorcycle isn’t the same as being in a car. I felt free while we rode through town, as I felt the wind on my skin and as I held on to Maverick, it didn’t feel so bad or out of place. Just calm.
He drove me to this place that was away from the city, it was a wooded area.
“You think I brought you into the woods to kill you, don’t you?” He joked as he chuckled.
“If you wanted to kill me, you would have by now. I have been to your bar a lot of times.” I replied. “Besides, I have come to realized that death plays an important role in the circle of life.”
“That was beautiful.” He murmured, “I’m taking you to this spot where you can see the stars. It’s calm and peaceful. It in the woods after all.”
We went to this spot where there was a clearing, we laid down and we looked up to the sky. The sky was clear and he was right you could see the stars.
“I feel like I need to just let you know that I really liked you from the moment I laid my eyes on you.” Maverick confessed, “you have a beautiful smile, you seem kind and empathetic. And boy you have an amazing voice.”
I turned looking at him with a confused expression.
“I heard you sing at the bar, during karaoke a few times.” He replied the unasked question, “there was this time where you came almost a whole week and you would sing that was the happiest week ever. Hearing you sing.”
“You do have a crush on me.” I said.
He chuckled, “I’m just yet to build you a shrine.” He joked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked while I kept looking at the stars.
“I didn’t want to come off as unprofessional to Mateo as I thought it would be weird if I asked you out and he worked for me.” He replied.
“That’s a lame excuse. You were just afraid I’d say no.” I stated.
He chuckled, “that too.” There was a short pause, “could I take you out tomorrow?” Maverick asked.
“I don’t see why not.” I replied as we both turned to look at each other and chuckled.
“I think this is the most romantic way I have asked someone on a date.” Maverick said as we both looked at the stars.
“I am not surprised.” I answered with a chuckle.
