I shook her to wake her up, she seemed to be having a bad nightmare. “Maeve, just open your eyes. You’re okay, it’s just a nightmare.” I said as I shook her softly. She woke up suddenly and she wiped the tears off her face, she turned to look at me. “You should go. I don’t want my roommate to find you here.” She said as she got out of bed. I guess she did have a point, I have already cheated on Zoey, which I feel guilty about but she is probably some girl I wouldn’t be seeing again any time soon so that should take care of itself. “You are right.” I agreed as I got up and started putting my clothes on. There was a knock on the door, “Maeve let’s go grab…” he stopped when he opened the door and saw me getting dressed as Maeve was leaving the bathroom. He looked at Maeve and smiled, “get ready so we could go get breakfast. I’m too hangover to cook and I want to thank you for covering my shift yesterday.” The man said then he turned to me, “you’re free to join if you want to.” He offered. Before I could even reply Maeve answered, “he has a busy day and he unfortunately wouldn’t be able to join us.” They were both looking at me, “uh… she’s right. I have to get going.” I said as I grabbed my shirt and walked out. I grabbed a taxi, told the driver my address and bolted out of there. I entered my apartment to find Zoey asleep on the couch, I walked up to her and kissed her forehead. She woke up, she looked at me as she rubbed her eyes, “I waited for you all night. I tried calling but your phone was off.” “Oh, I didn’t know that.” I said as I felt around for my phone but I couldn’t find it, “I probably left it in my car. Carson dropped by my office, I don’t know if you remember him?” “I do. How is he doing?” Zoey asked as she made her way to the kitchen. “He’s fine. He did take me to a party, now I’m suffering from a headache and I’m hangover yet I have to go to work.” I complained. “Maybe you shouldn’t have had so much to drink if you knew you were going to have to get to work today.” Zoey stated. I pouted like a small child. She looked at me and chuckled, she handed me some painkillers and a glass of water, “that should take care of the headache. Now you go have a shower then you could come down for breakfast. I’ll try and prepare something that would make the hangover slightly less painful.” I smiled as I pulled her in for a kiss, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” It felt kind of hypocritical telling her that when I just left another lady’s house but the worst part was that I didn’t feel guilty about it. It was a mistake, a drunken one, and who doesn’t make mistakes. I’m only human but the best was that Zoey didn’t have to know, I mean what you don’t know can’t hurt you. I called my assistant from the phone at home requesting her to go get my phone and car from the bar and drop it off at my place. I made sure she had a copy of my car keys for this kind of situations. I got a shower, I was getting dressed when the phone rung, “Artemis speaking.” I answered. “Sir I dropped your car at your place but I couldn’t find your phone inside it.” Brianna said. I picked up my jacket suit, “what do you mean it’s not there?” I asked. “I looked around, even under the car seats but your phone wasn’t there.” Brianna replied. I sighed, “thank you Brianna.” I said then I hung up. If my phone wasn’t in my car, then it’s either back at the bar… or I left it at Maeve’s place. I face palmed myself, so much for not seeing her again. I went down had breakfast with Zoey who was planning to go to an orphanage, one of the many orphanages she volunteers at. Zoey was a very nice lady, kind, polite, charming, beautiful and she always puts everyone’s needs before her own. We had very little in common but after mostly dating bad girls, I wanted to try someone who was calm and laid back and that’s how we got together. Thinking back now, that was probably the wrong reason to get into a relationship with someone. After a while, I found my life with her wasn’t what I thought it would be and I ended up find the relationship really boring. “Thanks for the lovely breakfast. I have to leave and try to track my phone, I don’t think I know where I left it.” I said as I took my plate to the sink, “how long will you be at the orphanage today?” I asked. “The better part of the day but I will be home before seven and so should you. I want to plan a romantic dinner for us.” Zoey said with a smile. “I will definitely be home by seven.” I kissed her goodbye then I left. I was to go to the bar first then try and track where Maeve’s house was. I was too drunk last night and too ashamed this morning to pay attention to where we were going. Not how I pictured my day going. Maeve Thompson We took a seat at this café that was opposite our apartment building, “I see you decided to take my advice and you got laid.” Mateo said as he looked at the menu. “Stop pretending to look at the menu as we both know what you will order and I didn’t take your advice, it was a mistake what happened. I don’t even know the guy’s name.” I said as the waitress approached us. We ordered our usual; Me with my coffee and croissant and Mateo with his pancakes, omelette and coffee. “Hey I’m not judging. As a matter of fact, I think now that you have all that pent up s****l frustrations out, you seem to be glowing.” He joked. I tried to his him from across the table but I missed making him laugh at me. “All I’m saying is that, it was a one-night stand and I probably won’t be seeing him again. Now let’s just have our breakfast in peace.” I stated. Mateo looked at me for a while, “I think you should join me in this party I’m attending this weekend. It’s going to be amazing, you can get drunk as much as you want because you won’t be driving anywhere.” I sighed, “and why would I want to do that?” I asked. “Because you need to wind down and relax, you are so uptight and I know you are nervous about your upcoming interview but you don’t have to be because you’ll crush it.” Mateo said. “You think so?” I asked. “I know so. I mean you are the most intelligent and intellectual friend out of all my friends.” Mateo said with a smile. I sighed and shook myself as though to shake away all my fear and nervousness. “I guess I will be attending that party then.” “Yes!” Mateo yelled gathering us an audience. “It always took days to convince you to come to a party. I can’t believe I have convinced you now within minutes.” “Don’t let it go to your head.” I said with a smile. “Oops! Too late.” Mateo said as the waiter put our meals in front of us. The rest of the time we were there he kept telling me who was going to be at the party that I might know and who to avoid as they get handsy when they are drunk. We finished our breakfast, paid the bill and we went to our apartment. My shift wasn’t until in the evening so I had time to kill and I thought I might get come laundry done as I wait. A minute after we entered there was a knock on the door. I looked at Mateo confused, “were you expecting someone?” I asked. He shook his head. I opened the door and standing there with a suit was the guys from this morning, “Hey?” He greeted me. I didn’t get a good look of him last night but with the sun out, it really brought out his features. “Hey, why are you here?” I asked as I looked at Mateo who was smiling as he walked away. “I didn’t mean you inconvenience you but I think I left my phone here last night.” He said. “Um… I’ll go check for it in my room. Come in.” I invited him in as I went to try and look for his phone in my room. It was going to be hard to find as I hadn’t cleaned up in a while. I went back to where he was seated, “uh… hey? I didn’t get your name.” I said. “Oh… it’s Artemis.” He said with a smile. “Ok Artemis, my room is kind of in a mess and I don’t think I would be able to find it. How about you give me your number and I can call it so we can find it faster?” I suggested. “Okay.” He said as I handed him my phone and I went upstairs to find the phone. I heard his ringtone and I was able to find it under one of my pillow. I went downstairs and handed it to him, and chuckled, “sorry for that.” “No problem.” He said as he handed me my phone back, “I guess… I—I will see you around.” He said on his way out. “Okay then. Bye.” I said as I closed the door behind him. What just happened? I wondered.
