A dangerous mission. A forbidden attraction. A love that was never meant to happen.

Ares Norcross never expected to fall into the hands of the most terrifying man in the empire.

When his younger sister mysteriously disappears near the legendary Grey Iron Castle, all clues point toward one person—the infamous Duke Garrick Valerius.

Known as the “Golden Duke,” Garrick is wealthy beyond imagination, powerful enough to influence the entire empire, and feared for his cold personality and ruthless reputation.

Rumors say he is cursed.

Rumors say he is creating the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.

Rumors say he will do anything to obtain eternal life.

Desperate to find his missing sister, Ares abandons his peaceful life as a university professor and enters the duke’s castle under a false identity—as a private tutor for Garrick’s two troublesome nephews.

His plan is simple:

Gain the duke’s trust.

Discover the truth.

Rescue his sister.

Leave without looking back.

But Garrick Valerius is not the monster Ares imagined.

Behind the cold mask is a lonely man burdened by an ancient family curse. Behind the terrifying golden eyes is someone who has spent his entire life waiting for a person who would see him—not his wealth, not his title, but his true self.

And that person is Ares.

The red-blooded scholar who dares to challenge nobles.

The gentle teacher who wins the hearts of two rebellious heirs.

The only person brave enough to stand before the Golden Duke and refuse to bow.

Slowly, the line between deception and affection begins to disappear.

Ares came to the castle pretending to care.

But Garrick begins to care for real.

When the truth finally comes out, the fragile trust between them shatters.

The man who once protected Ares becomes the man who refuses to let him go.

The duke who never believed in love becomes obsessed with the one person who betrayed him.

“You said you loved me.”

“Then don’t even think about leaving.”

Ares thought he was using the duke.

He never expected to become the only thing the duke could not lose.

In a world ruled by bloodlines, magic, and power, can a love born from deception survive?

Or will the Golden Duke’s obsession consume them both?

The Alchemist's Shadow and the Iron Citadel
In the bleak embrace of early winter, grey flurries of ashen snow swirled through the biting wind like charred confetti. Clack-clack, clack-clack— Out from the shifting shroud of frosted mist emerged a towering, skeletal carriage of sleek, biomechanical metal. It materialized abruptly upon the desolate road. Perched upon the driver's box sat a coachman distinguished by a prominently florid, bulbous nose. "Pray hold fast, my good sir! We shall make landfall at Castle Pig Iron anon," Debus , the driver, hollered over the gale. With a sharp snap of his wrist, he lashed his whip across the flank of the pulling unicorn. The beast, clad in an unblemished coat of ivory, let out a piercing neigh and surged forward with redoubled haste. Within the carriage's shadow-draped interior, the passenger remained taciturn. His lips bore a vivid, sanguine hue. At his feet rested a leather trunk of immense weight, its center adorned with an elegant, embossed coat of arms rendered in gilded filigree. Debus cast a curious glance rearward. "If I may inquire, sir—whence do you hail?" Castle Pig Iron was no sanctuary for casual sightseers. It stood as the sovereign heartland of the House of Valerius, a dynasty tracing its lineage to the ancient, golden bloodlines. Ordinary folk scarcely dared approach within twenty paces, pondering heavily whether any errand was worth risking the displeasure of the castle’s master—the august and unspeakably formidable Golden Duke. "In all my years driving for the ducal estate, I have yet to see a tutor of your tender years commissioned to the castle. You must be exceptionally well-lettered, sir." Ares Norcross chafed at his numb, stiffening fingers, offering a mild, self-deprecating smile. "You flatter me, goodman. Compared to my contemporaries, I possess no grand erudition. My modest expertise lies merely in literature and rhetoric—which happened to align with His Grace’s exacting requisites." Blessed with a natural, upturned countenance that lent him an air of perpetual amiability, Ares exuded warmth even before the speech left his lips. His pale green eyes, clear and pure as fine tourmaline, possessed a soothing gentleness that offered solace against the raging tempest. "There is no need for such stiff formality, elder. You may address me simply as Ares." From his satchel, Ares produced a silver hip flask brimming with rich whiskey and tendered it to the coachman. "Take this to stave off the chill. Toiling through such merciless elements must be exceedingly draining." "Ah, the truth of it!" Debus beamed, greedily accepting the offering. As the fiery spirit warmed his throat, his crimson nose flushed a deeper shade, resembling a ripe winter cherry. "I've been on my feet since the c**k's first crow. A grueling day, to be sure. Do not misinterpret my grousing, Ares—you are cut from a different cloth than the pedants who usually arrive here." He offered a hearty thumbs-up. "An exemplary gentleman." Ares murmured, "I am grateful for your kind estimation. My sole apprehension is whether the Duke's austerity will tolerate a temperament such as mine. Tell me, friend, are there any immutable protocols I must observe upon entering the estate? Should I adopt a more severe demeanor with the young masters?" Ares maintained an air of deferential inquiry, perfectly embodying a novice scholar eager to appease his patron to secure his tenure. Debu dismissed the notion with a wave of his hand. "Heavens, no! The young masters harbor a profound detestation for starchy moralists. The more austere the tutor, the more maliciously they torment them. They have driven away half a dozen scholars in a single month through their devilry." He scrutinized Ares from head to toe, noting his softly curling chestnut locks, his scholarly attire, and the faint, lingering indentations upon the bridge of his nose where spectacles routinely rested. "You possess a youthful countenance, Ares, which may well win their fickle affections. Yet, be forewarned: children are inherently capricious tricksters. If you vow never to credit their assertions blindly, nor consume any morsel they proffer, you shall circumvent the greater part of their machinations." "And regarding my audience with the Duke...?" "Alas, concerning His Grace, I can offer no counsel. Naught in this world can flatter him," Debu remarked, his voice dropping as he recalled the inscrutable lord of the fortress. "My solitary injunction: maintain your distance." "...Why so? Is His Grace given to tyranny or corporal malice toward his retinue?" "Not entirely," the coachman murmured, casting furtive glances to the left and right before lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "You are newly arrived outsider; hence the 'Valerius Curse' has not reached your ears." Ares shook his head with an air of naive ignorance. "The term is entirely foreign to me." "It is a malady of the blood—the 'Golden Fret'—a febrile madness that predestines the Valerius kin to an early, raving demise. Perhaps unhinged by this legacy, His Grace has grown exceedingly eccentric following the successive demises of his grandsire, the old Duke Garrick, and his own sister. He has arbitrarily sealed prosperous mining veins and diverted astronomical sums into the Academy of Sciences." Debu smacked his lips, savoring the smoky undertones of the whiskey as he relished the gossip. "Rumor whispers that in the subterranean vaults, the Duke commissions alchemists to forge the legendary Philosopher’s Stone—the panacea capable of purging all infirmities and granting life everlasting." The Philosopher’s Stone! Lost in his own narration, the driver failed to notice Ares’s hands clenching into white-knuckled fists, nor the flash of profound loathing and righteous indignation that ignited within his tourmaline eyes. Ares recalled the grim pronouncement of the scarred seer: "Ah, Professor, you claim your sister vanished whilst sketching near Castle Pig Iron? Heh... the pulsations of my crystal orb reveal that her disappearance is inextricably bound to the lord of that redoubt. Ten to one, he had abducted her. You ask what end? Clean maidens' blood is the cornerstone of the Great Work—the vital catalyst for the Philosopher's Stone. Who among mortals, even the most abject fool, could resist its sovereign power? The Crown has established its fifth royal laboratory this year; why marvel if another lies concealed within the bastion of a blue-blooded Duke?" The agonizing image of his sister, Catherine, languishing under the cruel caprices of the Duke filled Ares with a restless, burning dread. It was this singular horror that had compelled him to renounce his tenured chair at Charnewcast University to seek employment as a humble tutor. Suddenly, Debus flung back the leather curtain of the carriage. Biting sleet pelted Ares’s face like volleys of buckshot. "Behold! The pulsing heart of the Valerius dynasty—Castle Pig Iron!" Ares caught his breath. Before him loomed a colossal, monolithic fortress of slate-blue stone. Amidst the swirling squall, it stood in solemn, terrifying grandeur—a plutonic Titan forged of molten iron, seeming to lean against the lowering heavens as if to crush the earth beneath its weight. "Whoa—!" Debus reined in the unicorn. The carriage halted before a set of towering iron gates overlaid with a shimmering skin of auric film. "The majordomo Harley Tribe awaits you within the grand vestibule. Follow the main avenue past the gates, and you shall arrive directly." "I shall. My profound thanks for your guidance," Ares replied, descending into the slush with his heavy portmanteau. A sentry emerged from the watch-house, a ledger gripped in his gloved hand. "State your business and present your mandate or token for verification." Though phrased as a request, his tone carried the imperious weight of a martial command. His chainmail clinked softly against the scabbard at his thigh. An armor of such exquisite craftsmanship, worth a princely sum in the outer provinces, worn casually by a common gate-warden. "My invitation, officer." Suppressing his astonishment, Ares produced a heavy envelope from his satchel. Upon opening it, a delicate, pale-green phantasm projected into the frosty air—an advanced phantasmagoric matrix capturing his exact physical lineaments, a security measure reserved for high-security strongholds. The soldier compared the emerald likeness with Ares’s features, noting the corresponding glow upon his registry. "Professor Ares Norcross?" "The same." "By decree of the citadel, all personal effects must undergo scrutiny to preclude the introduction of illicit armaments or contraband." Ares unclasped his trunk. "As you require. It contains naught but my vestments, lecture notes, and instructional texts." As the sentry knelt to inspect the contents, Ares upturned his gaze toward the encroaching architecture. Up close, the opulence of Castle Pig Iron was staggering. Sunstones paving the courtyards, unicorns serving as beasts of burden, gaslit illumination—luxuries that would leave ordinary aristocrats breathless were standard fare here. And somewhere within this leviathan dwelt the Golden Duke himself. Beneath his sleeve, the platinum bracelet given by his sister pressed cold against his wrist, stinging his skin like steel needles. His lips moved in a silent, desperate vow: Hold fast, Catherine. Your brother is at hand. The piercing wind threatened to freeze blood in its tracks, prompting the sentry to curtail his examination. He returned the dispatch without further obstruction. "Heed this warning: save for the central avenue, all peripheral paths within the grounds are heavily fortified with active thaumaturgic wards. If you wish to avoid grievous injury, not deviate from the path. Go directly to the main portal; the majordomo Harley Tribe is within. Once you receive your identity token, the wards will recognize your signature." To fortify the interior with such dense magical defenses suggested an impregnable asylum. Yet Ares understood the necessity; the House of Valerius bore the solemn charge of guarding the imperial frontier against the rapacious, cunning machinations of the Shadow Fiends. Traversing the main avenue, he reached the grand portal, designed wide enough to admit two carriages abreast. Majestic marble columns executed in the classical Grecian style supported the portico, their natural veins twining like petrified ivy. Ares pulled the bell-gem, adjusted his lapels, and waited. Click. Silently, the ponderous doors swung inward. "You are a quarter-hour behind schedule, Professor Norcross," an elderly man intoned, consulting his pocket watch with an expression as frigid as the surrounding stone.
