Zara enjoyed working for the Gardners and without even noticing she put on some weight. While the food wasn’t fancy or extravagant, there was always enough of it. The abundance in comparison to what she had experienced in Berlin left her feeling guilty for her friends who’d suffered even more shortages since the Soviets had begun the blockade.
Charles Gardner worked in the supply department at the Wiesbaden airbase and often mentioned things like tonnages, calories and basic needs. Like everyone else, he was worried that a bad weather spell similar to that horrific rainstorm a while ago might send the entire operation tumbling, and to feed the population after that they might have to concede to the Soviets.
