THE WELCOME THAT WASN'T
The iron gates of Echo Hall creaked open with a reluctant groan, like the school itself had second thoughts about letting her in. Aria stepped into them, the wheels of her modest suitcase bumping against the uneven cobblestone path. Above her, the ancient building loomed in silence - dark brick cloaked ivy, spires clawing at the gray sky like forgotten memories.
It was beautiful.
It was unnerving.
She pulled her blazer tighter as a cold breeze swept across the courtyard. The uniform they'd sent in advance fit perfectly - black pleated skirt, silver accented navy blazer, and a deep crimson tie that shimmered faintly when the light hit it. It was elegant. Elite. Designed to remind every student that this place was for the "Chosen".
Echo Hall was a boarding school with a reputation - academically rigorous, socially ruthless. And hiding behind it's polished veneer, rumors of secrets no one dared speak aloud.
Aria's steps echoed as she entered the front hall. Marble floors, arched ceilings and chandeliers draped in crystal masse her feel like she'd stepped into another century. The scent of old books and polish mingled with something fainter. Something metallic. Something wrong.
"Name?" a sharp voice asked from behind an oak reception desk.
The school officer didn't look up. Her gray bob was neat, her uniform crisp. A single silver pin- shaped liked key- clipped on her collar. Aria hesitated, suddenly unsure of herself.
"Aria Quinn" She said, clearing her throat. The woman's eyes flicked up- cold, clinical and far too assessing - she didn't smile.
"You're late. Dorm E, Room 4. Top floor no elevator." She handed Aria a folded map and a lanyard. " Keep your ID visible at all times".
"Of course", Aria murmured, but the woman had already turned away.
The corridor behind the desk stretched on endlessly, lit by old lamps and lined with portraits whose eyes followed her movements. She could feel it. The way the air shifted the deeper she walked. Like the walls had seen to much and remembered every detail.
And then.... her phone vibrated.
She pulled it from her pocket and frowned. There was a new app. One she didn't download.
It had no name. Just an icon: a black door with a silver lock.
A chill ran down her spine
This wasn't just another term. Echo Hall was watching her. And deep down she knew -
She'd been here before.
Even if no one else remembered....
