Chapter 4 After dinner, Tom had a look at the excursion lists for the following day. The Ardeche Gorge trip would be a chance to see the famously spectacular gorge which had been eroded by the River Ardeche as it wound its way under natural rock bridges and the precipitous cliff sides riddled with extensive cave systems. These features would be best viewed from any of the many canoes available to hire, although unfortunately there would not be enough time to actually take to the river. There were, though, many viewpoints which would give good photo opportunities. The villages round the Ardeche are well known as being remote, untouched by time and particularly lovely, and the coach would be stopping at a small market where local honey and herbs, among other things, would be for sale.
