CHAPTER 26 Heavy, silent air hung around Jesse where he lay on his back in the yard. Charley held him in her arms. Warm blood spilled over her fingertips and stained them. Jesse coughed. “Charley.” His voice scraped across the silence. Morgan strode over, crouched down, and moved Jesse’s shirt. “He needs a doctor,” Charley said. Morgan tucked the shirt back into place and shook his head. Nothing could be done to save him. Charley felt lightheaded. “Oh, dear God.” “Ch-Charley,” Jesse whispered.
