CHAPTER 27 True to the family’s word, Charley had been sequestered in the house. When she did go out, Andy, Warren, or Cal accompanied her. Even then, they didn’t permit her to go farther than the back corral. But Charley had sneaked out of the house that first night. And every night after that for a week, she’d left at four in the morning. Tonight had been no different. Charley waited until four and stepped into the empty, silent hall. She’d grown up in this house and could navigate it with her eyes closed. Her eyes might as well have been since she couldn’t see anything in the dark.
