CHAPTER 5 Candles illuminated the dining room, throwing billowing shadows across the table and the green-and-white china. The warm aroma from the beef, potatoes, and freshly baked bread wafted up Charley’s nostrils. Her stomach rumbled as she took her seat. Aunt Lydia sat down next to Katherine, while Andy folded his newspaper, tucking it between his leg and the chair arm. After they said grace, Charley watched Katherine fidget in her chair and play with her napkin. Folding it, unfolding it. Katherine glanced up. Charley smiled at her and nodded.
