Calling Home

1164 Words
Jewel's POV That evening I needed to call my mom. I sat on my bed, pulling the cell phone they gave me from my bag. I hardly ever have to use it. I know weird right? An 18-year-old who doesn't play with their phone all day. Yeah, training to be Queen and to survive whatever it was taking up a lot of my time. Turning it on I seen I have several messages from some friends back home. I scrolled through them and responded to the ones that needed it. They all knew, I hardly checked this thing. I found mom's number and dialed it. I heard the ringing on the other side. "Hey honey," I beard my mom's voice. It sent a wave of warmth through my chest. "Hi mom," I sighed. "Seems like you have a lot to tell me." She chuckled on the other end of the phone. "I do," I flopped down on the bed to look up at the ceiling. "Start at the beginning and we will go from there. I am going to grab a cup of coffee and head onto the porch." Her tone was always like a soothing balm to me. "Ok," I got comfortable myself. Letting my body melt into the bed. "All settled, boo." She murmured. you could hear the smile on her lips. I proceeded to blurt everything from meeting Linzi to where the big half-dragon half-wolf guy showed up today. Mom never said anything just listened like she always did. "They want me to get married too." This was the last part I needed to tell her. "We knew that was a possibility." She answered as if it was a fact. "Did they say who?" Yep, this answer is what made me nervous to say. "Hawk and Some others have eluded to Tau being my mate. So they chose him." I said the words and squeezed my eyes shut. I wasn't sure what I expected her reaction to be. There was silence, I was starting to panic. Mom was silent when she was about to go berserk. The silence stretched out longer. I was unsure if she had hung up or not. "I think he is an excellent choice, honey." Her words were soft, I could hear the smile in them. "Wait, your not angry?" I was a little taken aback. "No, I am not." Again that hint of a smile in her words had all sorts of emotions raging in me. "Did you know?" "Yes, I did. I just wasn't going to say in case he does not make the second task." She sighed, you could hear the weight of her worry in those words. "I understand I worry about it too." I groaned a little as that pang of worry shot through my chest. "There is something else I need to tell you," My mom paused again, briefly. "Rachel is here. She divorced her human husband." "OMG!" I squealed over the phone. "Rachel was a Southern wolf and pack wolf mix. She was born in Australia so she had seen another like her until she met us. We hit it off and were fast friends exchange numbers and emails. She had married a human man but it was a strained one. I had told her to leave him and look for her mate. But she had not. I wondered what had happened for her to seek my mother out. " Does she want to come here?" I asked. "She does, but with all that you had I didn't want to surprise you with more." Mom was getting distracted suddenly. You could hear kids fighting in the distance. "Mom, can you hand the phone to Uncle Hawk I have a question for him," I asked I knew she need to go deal with my younger sister and cousins. "Of course. Bye honey I love you." She mumbled just before the phone was handed over. "Athena!! Why did you hit Ronan this time?" My mother's roar even made me still winch on the other side of the phone. "Jewel?" It was my Uncle Hawk. I know that faint deep lightly accented voice anywhere. "Uncle, I had a question." I was getting used to calling him that. It was kinda nice to get ancient demons' perspective on things. "Of course, what is it?" I could te he was smiling. "Do you know of an Ivan Nightbreed?" I asked. Uncle Hawk's silence meant he was thinking. A few thousand years old he had lots of memories to filter. "Yes, that is the original demon's name." He grunted. "How did you hear it?" "I was introduced to him through my security head. He said he was his half-brother." I knew something ticked in my chest I did not like. An ancient demon here playing a game with my head of security. I did not like this. "I will ask Athens to take me down for a quick visit tomorrow. That vampire owes me a few favors." He chuckled. "Thank you, Uncle. Should I tell the others?" I asked him. I knew he was going to hang up soon. "Say nothing, except your brother and that griffin Tau." His accent got thick. "I will be there tomorrow for training in the morning." In the last part, he vibrated a growl. I am pretty sure he realized what I did. There is not a suitable reason to play games with someone's head if he had good intentions. Who was he laying in wait for? Hawk can you and Tau come in here. I used the mind link. Be right there. He answered. A couple of minutes later, I had sent a text to Rachel and told her to come down to me. When my brother and Tau came in from Tau's room. "What's up?" Hawk asked. "Uncle Hawk will be here tomorrow." I started looking around the room. "Ivan Nightbreed is the ancient Nightbreed demon's name," I answered. I could see the exact moment, that the realization of everything took place. Both boys instantly built a growl in their chest. "Why would..." It was Tau's words that failed. "I don't know. But, my uncle will he it sorted tomorrow morning." I had no doubt he would. If it was because the demon was to kill me or anyone associated with me my Uncle would kill him. He was the one thing in this world that let my danger bells go off instantly. Plus he was my Uncle! It was crazy! "What if Nightbreed attacks him?" Tau asked. "He will die and we will see it." I had seen my uncle kill. It was the most vicious thing I had ever witnessed. He could not be killed. Nothing could stop him if he wanted something dead. Tomorrow Ivan Nightbreed would face his greatest test. Cacodemon. I don't think he believed me when I said he was my uncle. He was about to realize I was not just name-dropping.
