GAMBLE: Rule of Cards

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

“Good morning, everyone,” Denton said as people on the board welcomed him with a pleasant smile and round of applause. The official board of members were all under Denton, and that was the reason why they gave a lot of respect to Denton who founded the company. Included in the lineup was Sandra who is the official assistant-s***h-secretary of Denton and Paul, who is the head of the production management. “Now that the board has already been completed, may you agree to let me start my presentation about the company’s growth throughout the whole month. Next slide, please…”

Sandra, as the assistant of the boss, pressed the next button and that signified the start of Denton’s presentation to the board. He continued as the board members seemed to be agreeing and are all giving on-point and positive feedback to Denton’s presentation. Denton’s presentation is scoping throughout the growth of the company, as a whole and not just inside one department. For all fairness, the growth of the company at that month was the highest growth of the company throughout the years, which makes the presentation even better. The products were mostly in-demand and they are now the runner-up in the business of making gambling equipment, legally. He also iterated about the gross income of the company for the whole month, and was also the most number of income recorded. A lot of things happened inside the company for a month, and a lot of improvement too. Although Denton was distracted by something else, the company did good by itself.

“And that’s all with my presentation,” Denton said as he finished his presentation with a smile. The board members clapped their hands as an appreciation for Denton’s excellent presentation. The presence of Denton itself helped a lot in making the presentation easy-to-understand. Denton himself did not stutter and looked experienced as he was presenting his presentation. “May I introduce the next presenter, Mr. Jobs, the head of the production management team. Give him a round of applause.”

Nervous Paul who was waiting for his turn stood up as he left his laptop on Sandra who was the one assigned in handling the presentations. He started with an awkward smile as he greeted them for the introduction. “Good morning to the board members. I am Paul Jobs, the head of the production management and I will present to you the report of the growth of our department,” he said as he officially started his presentation. He focused on the production management and such things such as the quality of the products. “The production management team does not have errors about the numbers of workers in the factory. Fortunately, with the use of new machineries, their work has been so much easier. There are few accidents in the factory but fortunately, they were not that severe. The company took charge of all the accidents that happened.” He continued his presentation, focusing more on the production management team and the factory which is under his lead. “That’s all for my presentation. I hope that I gave you informative details about how my team is doing. We will persevere more and give you much better results than as of now.”

“That is a very informative presentation, Mr. Jobs. We are glad to hear those improvements from your team and we will be rooting for more success for your team and the company as a whole. You did not seem nervous at all and we love seeing your improvement in talking as well,” one of the board members told Paul who just nodded at the positive response of one of the board members. Little did that board member know, Paul was really nervous and was really tense the moment he stood in front of the people around the conference table. “Anyway, I heard you have something to reveal to the board, Mr. CEO? I do not know if we should be happy or expect something about this revelation of yours, but we should listen to you about this.”

“Oh, yeah, I almost forgot about the main agenda,” Denton said as he tried to remember what he was going to say to the board member inside the meeting. “This is a very shocking revelation for you all who do not know what’s happening in my life behind my life as a CEO. This must be surprising to everyone, except Paul and Sandra who knew it already beforehand,” Denton said. He took more time to kill before gently going to the revelations. “I just want to say that I love this company more than anything… but I might need to leave this company for some time since I have new obligations to do, and those obligations, I can’t say no to. So yeah, I have to leave the company, or you can just say ‘be inactive’, for no definite time. I will be back before you all even know. This is also something you can’t stop since I have already decided.”

“What, Mr. Mayfly? Are you taking a leave or leaving the company for a guarantee already?” one of the board members said. The revelation was a bit alarming to the whole board member. It was not really a worry for everyone if it was just an employee of the company announcing his leave to the company but it is not when it is the boss who is announcing the leave. The board members were at awe after hearing that coming from the boss’ mouth. It was really shocking to everybody inside the company, even to Sandra and Paul who already knew beforehand. “Is that the only reason you have in your mind? If you are leaving, who will be the CEO of the company? The company won’t run without its owner, sir.”

“I am not leaving for a guarantee, people. I am not taking a leave, also… or if you think about it, the word that will most likely describe to me now is ‘taking an indefinite leave’. I know that I am not a regular employee, and that is why I will not be taking a regular indefinite leave. I will be back once I am done with my responsibilities outside my real job,” Denton replied. Unlike anyone, he seems cool talking about his ‘indefinite’ leave with the members of the board. Although the board members are worried, they are half-happy to know that their hard working boss is ‘kind of’ taking a leave and will taste the taste of freedom. “Also, since my daughters are still little, they cannot replace me as the CEO of this company. With that in regard, I will be assigning my younger brother to replace me while I am away from the company.”

“Mr. Dennis?” the same board member asked. “It’s not that I am doubting your younger brother’s capabilities of leading a big company, but do you think he can handle all the pressure? I may say that he’s young to be doing this. It’s not that I am using his age to disagree, but we just don’t really know how Mr. Dennis will be able to lead the company without you.”

“Dennis was the only person who helped me in the creation of the company I desire. He most likely suggests things that he thinks are more suitable. He talks directly. He talks about one’s errors a lot, thinking that his critique might be needed for that certain somebody’s improvement. He is more matured-thinker than me. He has those things a leader should be, and I trust him,” Denton said. Denton has the greatest trust in Dennis, who did a lot of things for him. “He may be young but he’s well-educated and is surely a born leader. He might be lacking at some point, but please just help me point it out to him. You are older than him, so help him improve even more. I also think that it is the right time to train him how to handle bigger responsibilities. I hope you will agree with me this time.”

“We always agree to what you say, Mr. Mayfly. We know that whatever you do is for the sake of the company and you will not cause any harm to the company. We are acknowledging your decision, Mr. Mayfly,” one of the board member told with pleasing smile. One thing that Denton likes about in this company is that there is no competition against each other. People inside this company offers great camaraderie and they are working with the ambition of improving one’s self and the company as a whole. “So, when will be Mr. Dennis working? He should be started early of the month, so he’ll know what to do from the first thing to the last thing. Are you going to assess him beforehand?”

“Don’t worry about that, as the boss and the one he will be replacing to, I will be the one to assess him of what he must do after sitting on the position. I am thankful enough to you all for agreeing with my decision and I will promise you that Dennis will do a great job, nonetheless,” what he said was deep right from his heart. “Also, Sandra and Paul will be there at my new venture as the people who I know can help me. I know that I should not be asking you permission to let them go but for the sake of formality, please let them. Otherwise, I have people who I can assign as the secretary of the boss and the new head of the production management.”

“You have us on your back, Mr. Mayfly,” that one specific board member said before he stood up. The board member and Denton both shook hands with each other. “We will be rooting for more success of the company despite the new changes this month. We will be securing to support your younger brother’s term as the new CEO for the moment. We will be supporting him until you are back, Mr. Mayfly. I will also wish for the success of your new venture. That was an excellent presentation of the progress report of the company and you all did a good job. Thank you.”

The presentation ended well with the positive response of the board members. Denton and the gang went back to their respective offices and continued on doing their job. Denton and Sandra was inside the office, reading a lot of reports written in a bundle of bond papers in front of Denton. They were skimming it properly and was also exchanging words on how to solve the conflicts and how to improve the company more. Sandra was writing it all on her tablet to show Dennis what he must focus his sight to while he is on the position. Paul went back to his office and went on the factory to announce his indefinite departure and announcing the officer-in-charge, which is just his assistant.

After work, the family went dinner without Paul who drank some alcohol for his leave. He assured to treat the factory workers a good food and drink, since he became close with the workers. After the mini celebration, Paul went home. Denton called Sandra, Paul, Dennis and Jannah on the receiving area, while the kids are being taken care of by Imelda inside their room. “As you all know, Paul, Sandra, and I will be taking indefinite leave from the company,” he said as an introduction. “So, Dennis will be taking my position as the acting CEO of the company. I know that it will be a tough job for him but I know that he will do a good job.”

Jannah raised her brows. “So, why am I here? Why am I called here?”

“I called you here to announce that you should help Dennis on his job,” Denton replied. Jannah just raised her brows like she was expecting Denton to say that. “You will also be replacing Sandra as the new secretary of the acting CEO, Jannah.” The girl was too stunned to speak. She was just giving a confused look like she was not expecting that to happen. “I know, you are not into this type of job, like using the secretary’s uniform or what… but I know that you should be there to help Dennis. I know that Dennis will listen to you a lot…”

“And you are using that to push me to claim the job that does not really suit me, huh? Are you also going to expect me to wear that pencil skirts and all those decorations?” Jannah asked back. Denton just looked at Jannah who was contemplating on her own decisions. Denton was about to tell something to Dennis when Jannah cut him off and talked. “Of course, what should I do? As if I stand a chance. Just be quiet. I will be taking the position…”
