CHAPTER 1
GAMBLE, NOUN; an act of playing games in chance for money; while some other dictionary defined this as an enterprise undertaken or attempt with a risk of loss and a chance of profit or success. Sometimes, it is being compared to investing; both has to involve a lot of risks and choices. Though investing has a lot more chance of success than gamble, both still has the chance to fail. How about life? Is it considered as a gamble or considered as an investment? For some, it is a gamble. Gamble is typically a short-lived activity; and so as our life. We all will die in the end. Everything will end. We basically invest a lot of things in our life, just to secure a great future ahead of us. Though life includes a lot of investment, our life is typically a gamble, as we do not and cannot possibly know the billions of variables that may lead up to our choices. We do not know what will happen… and it is crazy, we do not know what will happen unless you started taking risks. Quoting Muhammad Ali’s quote; you do not let yourself believe it will happen to you. Whilst some are torn between choosing that their life is either a gamble or an investment; some thinks that their life is an opportunity, an opportunity in which the chances of succeeding vary. However, though we see our life different from other people, we still have to live up to it. We are lucky enough to have our life given to us. We are lucky enough to have given a chance to live our life. We are lucky enough to have given this chance of wasting our time living in a whole f****d up world today… or are we even? Sometimes, life is f****d up and a lot of s**t happens; are we even lucky? “f**k it…” a guy with a short, wavy hair silently cussed upon looking at the cards on his hand, leaving a grimace on his face. Everyone could see the annoyance in his eyes as he placed his card on the table, looking downward. He looked at the other player who is smirking while looking at him. “Should I show my cards…?” A big guy, with lots of tattoo on his hands and arms, talked. “Yeah, since you’re already f****d up,” he muttered and as soon as he told him that, the rest of the gang behind him started laughing their ass out. “Well, might as well getting your whole house from you. Do you even have more money to continue playing poker with me, Denton? I bet you do not…” “A widow like him, a f****d up jerk, and a gambling addicted; I bet he does not have any money left on him, boss,” one of the smaller jerks muttered. Denton and the boss remained silent while the rest of the gang behind their bosses laughed. “What are you waiting for? Show us your card so we could let you go home already. Our boss might have won a lot of cash just by playing with you, Denton.” Both the players, Denton and the so-called boss, went all-in. They both have their own prides, so upon looking at the one betting all his money, the other guy betted all his money, as well. The stake is higher and the chance of coming home with all the money on the table is even higher. They bet not just their money, but their prides in this final game. Each player is the master of their own fate, while the winning team would be the master of his own luck. “Let’s show our cards together,” Denton suggested that surprised the boss and the rest of his gangs. They thought it was a weak move of Denton to suggest. “Why? Are you afraid that I might win against you? That is so not you, sir…” The other gang members started on murmuring things behind their boss’ back. The boss looked back at them and gave them a death glare. “You little pieces of s**t, shut up. I am trying to focus on the game to take home the bet.” The little pieces of s**t shut their mouth and never tried to open the game. In Denton’s point-of-view, it really is terrifying to see the boss’ big build in front of him and the little pieces of s**t behind the boss who are like hungry hyenas hiding behind their mom. “Are you really trying to challenge me, you, son of a b***h?” “My mom is not a b***h, she is a lotto dealer when I was a little,” he answered, making the other player and the little pieces of s**t laugh their ass out. “Why are you all laughing? I was just telling you that my mom is not a b***h,” he defended but the other people in that desk just continued on laughing. He looked at the boss. “So, what? Is it a deal or a no-deal?” “Sure…” They looked at each other with different gazes. That was the moment he knew that he is surely f****d up. They held the five cards that they have as they are trying to feel what the other guy was about to do. They told each other that this is a deal but they do not trust each other; of course, they are opponents in this game. The big boss counted one to three and then, showed his cards. He looked at Denton who did not give a damn and remained unmoved. “Are you f*****g with me?” The big boss was cut when one of the little pieces of s**t started massaging his calves and burst out a big laughter from his mouth. “Stop stressing about that guy, boss!” the other hyenas looked at their boss’ card and was surprised to see a four-of-a-kind. “You surely are winning this game, boss…” Four-of-a-kind is the next highest hand in poker, the second highest hand in poker and will surely make every opponents of the player who has that nervous. He really thought that the victory is already him without even knowing what kind of cards does Denton have. “Have you already urinated on your pants?” Denton looked at his pants that was still dry and haven’t even gotten wet. “You can just let me bring my prize money and give up without showing your card if you are that coward to show your cards…” That was when Denton thought he really is in super-duper f****d up situation. He was in deep thought whether to show his cards or just give up in the thought. He looked at the prize money, a twenty-thousand dollar bills piled up on the table. “I am not the guy to give up in the middle of the game,” he muttered as he flipped his cards upside down and showed his cards. The boss’ smile slowly faded as soon as seeing his opponent’s cards. Denton’s card is a straight flush – a royal straight flush. His cards include the A, J, Q, K, and 10, all of hearts. He just got the odds of having this flush in one over six-hundred and fifty thousand chances. “This is impossible…” the big boss muttered. All the hyenas behind him were also in awe after seeing Denton’s card. It is really impossible but the God of luck might have supported him throughout the game. The big boss looked at his opponent who gave no damn. Denton was about to pack the prize money inside his lousy bag when the big boss talked. “You cheated…” Denton stopped upon hearing that statement. “What do you mean?” The younger gangs looked at Denton, carefully memorizing the terror written on Denton’s face. He really knew he would be f****d up if he won against that manipulative boss. Denton cussed a little earlier knowing that he got the highest hand and that the boss will not have a chance to win the prize, which is what led him into deciding whether to pursue playing or just give up but as soon as seeing the prize money, he knew he should continue as he was that desperate already. “Boss, I played a real, honest game. In what way could I have cheated on you?” “There’s no chance of you getting that f*****g royal straight flush, Denton, you, liar.” The big boss was already gritting his teeth. Of all the times that he played with him, this is the first time that Denton won, and that is why put all of his cash all-in to the bet. The younger hyenas looked at Denton who has already dropped the bag full of cash on the ground. He knew it was going to happen. “Get that dimwit and break all of his bones.” Denton shook his head while trying to escape from the younger gangster who is trying to get him and break all of his bones. “s**t,” he muttered, as he tried to run away but was blocked by one of the younger gangster. “I did not really cheat on your boss. I did not actually think that I would get a royal straight flush. I was just lucky enough to get that today… but yeah, just get the money and let me slip this time. Let me slip just this time… please.”
