Ronan's Perspective
After punishing Raine, I turned and walked a distance, but the tightness in my chest lingered.
Sable was still following behind, crying and sniffling, her makeup ruined, the finger marks on her face red and not yet swollen down.
Marta was an old-timer in the Ashgrave Pack, and Sable was her adopted daughter, so I gave her a bit more leniency.
I couldn't stand the noise, so I took her to treat the wounds on her face.
"Alpha, you're so gentle!" Her voice was full of coquettishness.
"Mm, go back and rest well."
I placated her with a few perfunctory words, and she left cheerfully.
Watching her back, my gaze uncontrollably drifted toward the figure kneeling on the training ground.
It was Raine. Even in such a sorry state, the way she looked at me while kneeling was still so bright, even carrying... longing and pleading for me.
That beautiful, pure face was full of fragility. It ignited a strange thrill deep in my heart.
I was an Alpha, holding power. Weak omegas relying on me, begging for my favor—it was only natural.
When Raine wasn't so stubborn, I would soften too.
But she was a wolfless person, even lower than an omega. The favor I had shown her in the past was too much, letting her become spoiled, which would make others think I was being unfair.
Forget it. It was just punishing a wolfless person who didn't know her place. I had done this countless times; there was no need to care.
I tried to convince myself, but my chest still felt tight.
Elder Elowen was still waiting for my reply.
I suppressed my irritation and left.
Raine's Perspective
My knees had gone numb. It had long been past dark, but no one had said I could leave, so I kept kneeling.
Exhaustion, pain, stickiness—my body and gaze seemed weightless.
Sable came over with two lackeys, walking lightly.
She had changed into a more delicate dress, and the red swelling on her face had faded to a faint mark.
"How does it feel to kneel for so long?" She looked down at me.
I pretended not to hear.
She circled around in front of me: "Raine, no matter how you struggle, in Alpha's heart you're not even a fraction. You're just a purchased Wolfless. Do you think because he glances at you a couple more times, you can climb to some position?"
"Idiot."
I looked up at her and sneered coldly.
Sable's face stiffened for a moment. "What did you say?"
"You heard me." I couldn't be bothered to waste words on her.
Her face turned red and white, and she raised her hand to slap me.
I straightened my back, staring at her without blinking, even lifting my chin.
"If you want another taste of what you got earlier, go ahead."
Her hand froze in midair and never came down.
The omega beside her grabbed her hand and persuaded: "That's enough, Sable. Don't lower yourself to her level."
Sable gritted her teeth, withdrew her hand, threw out "Just you wait," and left with her people.
The footsteps faded. I closed my eyes again, the soreness and pain under my knees spreading once more.
The sky was completely dark when Ronan returned.
Sable rushed up from the side and hooked her arm around his, her voice soft: "Alpha, I've prepared hot water for your bath. You've worked hard all day..."
Ronan didn't respond.
His gaze swept around and landed on me.
"Call Raine in," he said.
Sable's smile instantly froze.
I was helped up. My legs felt like lead, every step sinking into soft mud.
By the time Sable was throwing a fit, I had already walked into Ronan's bedroom.
Ronan had already taken off his outer robe and was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking lazy, a smile playing at the corner of his lips, his gaze signaling me over.
I reached out to unbutton his inner clothes. The wound on my shoulder was pulled, and my fingertips trembled so much that a single button took several tries.
He looked down at me, silent.
I felt his gaze on me from head to toe, but I never looked up.
Half the pain in my body was thanks to him. Expecting him to truly care about me was a luxury.
After changing his clothes, I was about to step aside, but he suddenly wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me into his arms.
"Sable grew up in the Pack," he said with a trace of disdain, "She'll have her place in the pack in the future. You're just a purchased Wolfless Omega. Stop making trouble for yourself."
I lowered my lashes, showing the obedient side I wore before all men.
"Understood. I'll try not to make Miss Sable unhappy."
I nestled quietly in his warm embrace, cursing this dog of a man in my heart.
After giving Ronan a relaxing massage, I could finally lie down.
Soon, a servant came in with a small bowl.
A small bowl of dark liquid sat on a tray, placed neatly on the corner of the table.
It was a Pack rule: any unmarked Omega could not become pregnant before the Luna was chosen, and had to take suppressants on time.
But today, Ronan looked at the bowl and frowned.
After a long moment, he spoke: "Don't drink it today. You knelt all day and got hurt."
Even so, I could still hear the charity in his tone.
I had knelt all day, covered in wounds, hungry and thirsty. Normally hearing that would have been a relief—but I was very clear: to escape, I absolutely could not become pregnant.
In that instant, I struggled up.
"I need to drink it." I didn't care about anything else. I picked up the bowl and drained it.
The medicine was bitter and astringent, but once in my stomach, there was a strange, comforting warmth.
I wiped the corner of my mouth.
Seeing my unusual initiative, Ronan's face darkened, as if he had thought of something.
He stared at me for a few seconds but said nothing.
The air chilled. He said nothing more and went back to sleep without interest.
That night, I gradually felt my whole body burning.
Nausea surged from my stomach. The moment I turned over, I vomited.
I hunched over the edge of the bed, cold sweat instantly soaking my nightgown.
My head was splitting, and my limbs were so weak I had no strength.
"Raine?" Ronan was woken by me.
In the dim light, he sat up and put his hand on my back.
The young master didn't know how to care for people; his touch was clumsy. After patting me twice and seeing I was still vomiting, he became even more flustered.
"What's wrong with you?" His voice lost its usual steadiness. He turned and shouted toward the door, "Get the doctor, quickly."
I lay on the edge of the bed, my vision darkening in waves.
I hadn't eaten much anyway, so there was nothing left in my stomach. The bitter taste of bile spread from my throat to my tongue.
My eyelids kept twitching.
Ronan lowered his voice and spoke to the people outside, his tone urgent.
I couldn't hear clearly, my mind a blur, but one thought kept jumping out.
This time, nothing must go wrong...
Otherwise... all my plans would fall apart.
