Chapter 2

Ronan's POV "So this is what your obedience today was really about! Impossible!" The sound of the cotton swab and ointment being tossed back onto the table made Raine flinch. She seemed to want to avoid my gaze. I gripped her chin and forced her to look at me. "Raine, don't even think about it! You're mine, and you'll always be mine. I will never let you leave!" I stormed out of the bedroom, but my agitation wouldn't dissipate. Raine was a Wolfless—lower in status than even an Omega. I had favored her so much in the past, always letting her grow spoiled and arrogant, making everyone feel it was unfair. I had punished her, but afterward, I personally applied medicine to her wounds. I had already been good enough to her. Treatment that countless others begged for and never received—and she didn't even know gratitude! Her face kept appearing in my mind. The way she looked when moved, and the way she looked when crying pitifully. The way she looked at me was so… longing and pleading. That beautiful, pure face was full of a sense of brokenness. It ignited something in the depths of my heart—something like a strange pleasure. But what she said was that she wanted to leave my side. In that instant, both my wolf and I flew into an unpremeditated rage. I couldn't explain that anger, but I knew. I was the Alpha, holding power in my hands. It was only natural for a weak Omega to depend on me, to beg for my grace. But her—she could not leave. I absolutely would not allow her to leave. Raine's POV Sure enough, all the tenderness was just my fantasy. I was still that worse-than-dog Wolfless Omega, still an object he could summon and dismiss at will. I wept silently. And my plan only grew more resolute. I could have lived with more dignity. My family and friends must have never given up searching for me. I wanted to return to human society, to continue university—not to be a slave here! I must escape! My knees had already gone numb. The night was deep. Exhausted, sticky, my body and my gaze both seemed to float. I just wanted to go back to my own bed and sleep. Sable, with two lackeys in tow, stepped lightly into my path. She had changed into a finer dress, the red swelling on her face faded to a faint mark. "After all that, you still couldn't spend the night in Alpha's bedroom, could you?" She looked down at me. "How did it feel, kneeling for so long today?" I pretended not to hear. She circled around to stand in front of me again. "Raine, no matter how you fight, you don't amount to even a fraction in Alpha's heart. You're nothing but a bought Wolfless. You think just because he looks at you a few more times, you can climb to some position?" "Idiot." I raised my head and looked at her with a cold smile. Sable's face froze for a moment. "What did you say?" "You heard me." I couldn't be bothered to waste words on her. Her face flushed red and pale by turns. She raised her hand to slap me. I straightened my back, stared at her without blinking, and even lifted my chin. "If you want another taste of what you got earlier, go ahead." Her hand froze in midair and didn't come down after all. The Omega beside her pulled at her hand and urged, "Enough, Sable. Don't stoop to her level." Sable gritted her teeth, withdrew her hand, threw down a "Just you wait," and left with her people. The next night, I was summoned again. Sable went up to meet him, looping her arm through Ronan's, her voice soft and sweet. "Alpha, I've prepared hot water for your bath. You must be tired after a long day…" Ronan didn't respond. His gaze swept around and landed on me. "Send Raine in," he said. The smile on Sable's face froze instantly. By the time Sable left in indignation, I had already walked into Ronan's bedroom. Ronan had already removed his outer robe and sat on the edge of the bed. He looked languid, his gaze signaling me to come over. I reached out to unbutton his inner robe. He looked down at me and said nothing the whole time. I felt his gaze on me, from head to toe, but I never looked up. After changing his clothes, I was about to step aside. But he suddenly reached out, wrapped an arm around my waist, and pulled me into his embrace without a word. "As long as you don't provoke Sable, nothing will happen." His tone carried a hint of disdain. "Also, I hope you won't bring up yesterday's matter again. I won't let you leave me. Don't anger me again." I lowered my lashes and showed the obedient face I showed all men. "I understand." I nestled quietly in his warm embrace, cursing this bastard in my heart. After giving him a relaxing massage, I could finally lie down. Soon, a servant came over carrying a small bowl. A small bowl of dark liquid, placed on a tray, set properly at the corner of the table. This was the Pack's rule. Any unmarked Omega could not become pregnant before the Luna was chosen, and must take contraceptive decoction on time. But today, Ronan looked at the bowl and frowned. After a long while, he spoke. "Not tonight. You just got hurt yesterday." Even so, I could still hear the charity mixed into his tone. Perhaps the old me would have felt a trace of emotion at this—but now I knew very well that to escape, I absolutely could not become pregnant. In an instant, I picked up the decoction. "I need to drink it." Regardless of anything, I lifted the bowl and downed it. The medicine was bitter and astringent, but once in my stomach, it brought a kind of comforting warmth. I raised my hand and wiped the corner of my mouth. Seeing my unusual initiative, Ronan's expression darkened for some reason. He stared at me for a few seconds, his jaw tight, but said nothing. The air grew colder. He said no more and lay back down to sleep, all interest gone. At night, I gradually began to feel feverish all over. Nausea surged up from the bottom of my stomach. I had barely turned over before I threw up. I leaned over the edge of the bed, cold sweat instantly soaking my pajamas. My head throbbed splittingly, my limbs so weak I had no strength at all. "Raine?" Ronan was woken by the noise. In the dim light, he sat up and patted my back. The young master didn't know how to care for anyone. His touch was clumsy. After two pats, seeing me still vomiting, he grew more flustered. "What's wrong with you?" His voice lost its usual steadiness. He turned and shouted toward the door, "Call the doctor! Hurry!" I leaned over the edge of the bed, my vision going black again and again. I hadn't eaten much to begin with, so there was nothing left in my stomach to throw up. The bitter taste of bile spread from my throat to the tip of my tongue. My eyelids kept twitching. Ronan lowered his voice to speak with someone outside, his tone urgent. I couldn't hear anything clearly. My mind was chaos, but one thought kept surfacing. Nothing must happen this time… Otherwise… all my plans would be ruined along with it.
