I take a breath and turn my head. “Grandma.. err.. Your highness, what are you doing here?”
“I’m here because you never abdicated your claim to the throne. I was hoping to start transferring some responsibilities to the countess assuming she’ll be next in line.”
She looks at me. “As I was heading through the doors I discovered the very disturbing betrayal from Duchess Mara. I was worried she got to you with a vampire army, but it seems like you might have some guardian angels looking out for you.” She glances around at my friends with a soft smile.
My heart falls just hearing the word angel.
“I.. we.. lost someone dear to us. Can you bring him back?” I whisper.
“No Jade. I can’t bring people back from the dead. I’m sorry.” I look down again.
