In His Shadow
The night was never supposed to change my life. I was just a good girl leaving the office late, hugging a stack of files to my chest and wishing for sleep. The streets were nearly empty, the hum of the city reduced to flickering streetlamps and the sound of my heels clicking against the pavement. I hated staying this late at work. But when you're the quiet one... the girl who never says no... It's easy for everyone to dump their unfinished tasks on you. And me? I just smiled and took it. That was who I was: the obedient intern, the invisible girl in a world too big for me. Until I saw him. A tall figure leaned against a sleek black car at the edge of the parking lot. He suit was sharp, his presence commanding, but it wasn't his wealth that made my breath catch.... It was the way the shadows seemed to bend towards him, like even the darkness belonged to him. Our eyes met, and I froze. His gaze was cold, unreadable, yet sharply magnetic. I should have looked away. I should have walked past like he was nothing. But my feet betrayed me, slowing down as though some invisible thread pulled me closer. "Leaving late", little one?" His voice was low, smooth, carrying the kind of authority that made the hairs on my arm rise. I swallowed hard. "I.... I work here. Just finishing up". A faint smirk curved his lips. He took a step forward, and suddenly the air between us felt heavier. Dangerous. "You shouldn't walk alone at night," he said, his tone almost teasing, almost warning. "Shadows can be.... Unpredictable." I tightened my grip on the files, forcing myself to take step back. "I'll be fine. Thank you". But before I could move, his hand brushed against mine... not roughly, not gentle either, but enough to make me freeze. His touch was warm, commanding and for a moment I forgot how to breathe. "Be careful, good girl, he murmured, his eyes glinting like secrets in the dark. "Now that you've stepped into my shadow, escaping won't be so easy." And just like that, he was gone... sliding into his car and driving away as though he hadn't just shaken the ground beneath me. I stood there, heart pounding, unable to explain why a stranger's words felt less like a warning.... and more like a promise. ----- I forced myself to move. The files was slipping from my sweaty grip, and I cursed softly under my breath as I hurried towards the bus stop. My cheap heels pinched, my blouse clung to me uncomfortably, and yet all I could think about was his eye.... dark, sharp and unreadable. Who was he? I shook my head, scolding myself. He was probably just another rich man who thought the world was his command. I should forget him, pretend the encounter never happened. After all, what would someone like him have to do with someone like me? But the way he said those words... my shadows.... they echoed inside me long after I boarded the bus. ------ The next morning, I tried to push the memory away. I straightened my cheap blazer, tucked my hair behind my ear, and forced on a polite smile as I entered the office. My boss, Mrs Grant, immediately shoved a stack of reports onto my desk. "Be a darling and finish these before lunch, Amelia," she said without even looking at me. I modded. "Of Course". That was my role here. Quiet, efficient, invisible. The good girl who never argued. But that morning felt different. I couldn't shake the feeling that the air was heavier, as if his shadows all clung to me. At ten, a buzz of whispers spread through the office. Everyone suddenly sat straighter, adjusting ties and blouses, pretending to look busy. Curious, I peeked towards the glass doors. And froze. It was him. The man from last night. The one who had warned me about shadows. He walked into the office with the kind of presence that silenced entire rooms. He suit was flawless, his steps measured, his expression unreadable. "Mr . Blackwell," "Mrs.Grant said, her tone a mix of fear and awe. "We weren't expecting you today." My heart stopped. Black well. Ethan Blackwell. The name was enough to make headlines. Billionaire. Ruthless. Dangerous. And he was here. In my office. His gaze swept the room lazily, like a king surveying his subjects. And then, unbelievably, it stopped.... on me. Those same dark eyes locked onto mine, and my pulse spiked so violently I nearly dropped my pen. "Her," he said simply, his deep voice cutting through the silence. Mrs. Grant blinked, "S... Sir?" He didn't look away from me, send her to my office. Now." Every head turned towards me. My face burned as I stood on shaky legs, my files clutched to my chest like a shield. I could feel the whispers following me, questions hanging in the air. Why me? Why the invisible intern? I stepped into his office, the heavy door clicking shut behind me. He was already there, leaning against the desk like he owned not just the building, but the world. "Amelia, isn't it?" His lips curved into that same dangerous smirk. I nodded, my throat dry. "Y...Yes, sir." His eyes glinted. "I warned you last night. Now you're bound to me, little one". I gripped the files tighter. "I don't understand". "You will", he said softly, stepping closer, shadows pooling around him like a cloak. "Because I always get what I want. And right now, Amelia... what I want is you". ----- My lips parted, but no sound came out. Me? Of all the polished executives, the confident assistants, the women who looked like they belonged in his world...why me? I tightened my grip in the files until the edge bit into my palms. "Mr. Blackwell...you must be mistaken. I'm just just an intern." He chuckled, low and dark, like he knew a secret I didn't. "Intern. Assistant. Heiress. Pauper. Tiles mean nothing to me, Amelia." His voice dropped, silken and dangerous. "What matters is that you caught my attention. And that...is very rare. Heat rushed up my neck, half from fear, half from something I couldn't name. His gaze was too steady, too consuming, like he was peeling back the layers I'd spent years building around myself". I shook my head, forcing my voice steady. "Sir, I think you are overestimating me. I'm nobody important. Ethan Blackwell pushed off the desk and closed the distance between us with unhurried steps. Every inch he moved forward, I felt myself shirking back until the edge of the chair behind me stopped my retreat. He didn't touch me...but his presence pressed against me all the same, thick and suffocating. "You are wrong," he said softly, his hand brushing a strand of hair away from my face. His touch lingered, deliberate, claiming. "From the moment I saw you, I knew. You dont belong in the shadows, Amelia. You belong in mine." My breath caught. His words wrapped around me like chains, terrifying yet magnetic. I wanted to run...but some reckless, hidden part of me wanted to stay. The sound of Mrs.Grant's voice outside the door shattered the tension. "Mr.Blackwell, the board are waiting for you". Ethan's jaw tightened, but he didn't look away from me. His thumb grazed my cheek, almost possessively, before he finally straightened. "Stay close, Amelia," he said, his tone more command than request. "Your life is no longer your own. It's mine." And just like that, he strode out of the office, leaving me trembling in the what had just happened? One thing was certain .... whatever game Ethan Blackwell was playing, I had just become a piece on his board.
