The Promise of a True Luna
Alpha Greythorn stood stoic and thoughtful as he looked out, passed the lake into the far away trees. The smell of the rustling leaves and still water swirling all around him as his eyes teared with the grief of the loss of another pack member this night. His heart still splintering with the loss of the pack link like a knife tearing a part of his soul away. With each Blood Moon that had passed for the last two hundred years the Goodhaven Pack suffered loss after loss from their pack. Most believed this to be a punishment from the Moon Goddess, but Alpha Greythorn knew the real reason behind their misfortunes. Their pack had not been blessed with a true Luna since his great great grandmother, Matilda. Without a true Luna, the pack had slowly deteriorated succumbing to disease and madness. War ravaged his land, killing his pack members quicker than new life could be brought into it. The pack had done nothing but decline under Alpha Greythorn’s rule despite every effort he made. The rage that flowed through him was consuming his soul and tearing away at his wolf, Jebidiah. An involuntarily growl ripped from Alpha Greythorn’s throat as his hands clenched at his side and he the fur ripple through his arms, his fangs elongating as his body heated unbearably. As if desperate for relief from the pain his human form sunk back and his wolf shot through his skin, snarling, and snapping at the sky as if he was picking a fight with the stars. Jebidiah ran. He ran fast and far until his energy dwindled and fatigue overcame him. Neither Jebidiah or Alpha Greythorn paid no mind to the beauty of the land around him as his paws hammered the ground, leaping over broken branches and swerving century old trees. Alpha Greythorn’s mind blissfully empty as his wolf tore up mile after mile. Jebidiah stopped to drink from the spring, exhaustion over coming him. Neither of them was willing to return to the pack house though so he found a large over hanging tree and Jebidiah curled in on himself and promptly fell asleep. “Alpha Greythorn” the soothing light voice, almost a whisper called to him. “Please, we must talk. There is not much time.” Alpha Greythorn groggily opened his eyes, expecting his human form to be sheltered under the tree only to find he was simply standing in a bright white light of nothingness. Rubbing at his eyes due to the sudden brightness Alpha Greythorn face filled with confusion. He looked around until he noticed a wisp of smoky light coming towards him. The wisps transformed into a beautiful woman, with blazing red hair that hung in soft curls down her back and skins so white she remained almost translucent. “Alpha Greythorn, thank you for joining me.” The woman spoke, her voice was still light but Alpha Greythorn noted the confidence in her tone. “We do not have much time before your pack finds and wakes you. We must...” “Excuse me, what is this? Where am I? Who are you” Alpha Greythorn demanded. He was so utterly baffled by the events unfolding in front of him that he was wondering if the affects of the pack madness at gotten to him too. After a slight pause, as if debating whether to scold him for his harsh words the woman replied, “I am the Moon Goddess, the creator of Wolf Shifters and the original True Luna” The Moon Goddess’s voice held no arrogance or superiority. “You must understand Alpha Greythorn, I have visited you on this night with an important message for you, for your pack.” “For my pack? The pack that you have abandoned for the last two hundred years. Allowing the death of hundreds of wolf shifters. Leaving us to suffer immeasurably.” Alpha Greythorn spat out. His distain for the Moon Goddess evident in his words. “I have never abandoned you or your pack.” The Moon Goddess snarled out, her eyes flaring a bright gold which indicated her wolf’s presence at her words. Alpha Greythorn stepped back in surprise as the strength emanating from the Moon Goddess brought him to his knees. “Secrets are destroying your pack Alpha Greythorn- not me! I know your pack is suffering, I feel the death of each shifter deeper than you could ever imagine. I cannot help you whilst Goodhaven refused to help itself.” Alpha Greythorn still down on his knees pleaded “Please, Moon Goddess, forgive me. I am, we are, broken. The pack is divided and falling apart, and I just do not know what to do” Alpha Greythorn words shuddered out as despair and fear rose through his body as the thought of his pack sinking even deeper. “I understand” the Moon Goddess stated returning to her ethereal calmness, as she bent to take both of Alpha Greythorn hands and help him to his feet. “This is why I am here. I want to give your pack a chance. On the second Blood Moon from today a girl will be born, her parents are humble members of your pack. This daughter will be extraordinary and will rise, flourish, and become a True Luna.” Alpha Greythorn gasped. A True Luna, could it really be he thought to himself. This answer to the questions he had only dreamed would be answered. “You must remember this conversation Alpha Greythorn, secrets destroyed your pack and prevented a True Luna being born for two hundred years. I am giving you a True Luna in the hopes that she will help the pack thrive but if you continue to let those secrets fester, even a True Luna cannot save the pack. Remember, Alpha Greythorn a True Luna will only lead where she is needed. As the Moon Goddess spoke those last words, Alpha Greythorn felt soft shakes to his shoulder and consciousness rose within him.
