Damien's POV
It was 2am in the morning and the only sounds I could hear were sounds of owls and bats deep in the woods. Those sounds helped me relax at night.
I sipped on the glass of water in my hand, not that I was thirsty but I did not want to scare my guest away by drinking blood like it was normal. She did not know what I was and the truth is, she didn't need to.
When I found her in that alley, it took all the self control I could muster to stop myself from feeding from her, but the smell of her blood was quite different. As a vampire, I hunt based on the smell of blood and I could say for sure that her blood was different from any other. It had a strong smell that you could perceive from a mile away, it practically invited you to her but I did not have to taste it to know it was bitter.
Humans sure are funny, they always bragged about living in peace and harmony unlike we divided vampires but for the past four decades, vampires fed on half dead humans. It seemed like there was no more peace for humans.
They were killing themselves.
But this one that I found was different, I did not need to be told.
The soft patter of little feet is what stopped my thoughts. I stayed still and listened, until finally, the human in my home showed up in the doorway of my kitchen. It baffled me sometimes how humans misuse the luxury of sleep given to them. Vampires find it difficult to close their eyes for up to two minutes and then these ones who could sleep whenever and wherever they want hardly seem to do so. At the sight of me, her mouth fell open and her hands flew up, ready to demonstrate her reason for being in my kitchen by this time of the night.
"Uh-uhm I needed a gla-"
"You really think you could sneak around like a thief in this house and not get caught?" I said smugly.
She looked like a deer caught in headlights. It was obvious that she thought I was asleep.
"I thought you were asleep. I did not want to disturb"
"You don't need to worry about that"
"What?"
"Why aren't you asleep? I thought humans fall asleep immediately their asses are on a comfy bed" I diverted the question to her, I could not tell her I don't sleep.
She looked at me dumbly, surprised at my choice of words.
"I could not sleep" she later replied.
I nodded. I wanted to know what happened to her to land her in her position. Of course I could always search her thoughts and figure it out but if I can help it, I always try not to do that, especially to humans.
"It is not necessary" She spat. It seems I struck a nerve, she stormed to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. I made sure to move all the blood I store in my fridge to the closet in the guest room. She did not need to see that. I wanted to keep her for a while before telling her what I really needed her for and carrying on with it, although now that I realized her blood was undrinkable, I had to find out why and what she was.
"I will find out either way" I told her.
She slammed the bottle against the counter and turned to me. "How?" She taunted.
I walked towards her and stared deep into her eyes. The eyes were the gateway to the mind and for a girl that fragile, I had imagined that it would be easy to read her thoughts.
I was wrong.
It was blocked. Everything was blocked. I could not even peep into her mind, it looked like she had no thoughts. Her mind was dark and blank but it was not supposed to be so. She is a human, isn't she?
Blank minds are common among vampires because some of them have the power to block their thoughts from others, but I have never-- ever seen a human with a blank mind.
The more I think about it, the more uncanny it gets. The moment I saw her, I knew she was to be my servant-- the one who feeds me-- but now I realize that her blood is too bitter for me, not only that, but I also cannot read her thoughts. Did my intuition lie to me?
I shut my eyes and let out a groan. It was difficult to get into her mind and physically, it messed with my mind.
"Are you okay?" She raised her hand to touch me and mine flew up to catch it mid-air. I held her wrists firmly and backed her to the wall, I grabbed her other wrist, pinning them against the wall.
"What are you?" I asked her, my voice coming out in a growl.
"W-what? W-what are y-you talking ab-bout?. Let me go!"
She stuttered in fear, trying to pull her hand out of my grasp but failing miserably.
"Answer me!" I sneered "You are not a human being, are you?"
"P-please let me g-go" Tears were falling down her cheeks and immediately, I let go of her.
I lost myself.
The moment I let her go, she ran back into her room and shut the door, locking it. I followed her and stood by the door. I did not really know how to explain myself, but I just needed her to know that it was not intentional. I allowed my feelings to get the best of me, I can only but imagine how much it scared her-- she was a human after all.
"Persephone" I called "open the door"
There wasn't a single sound coming from the other end of the room and this somehow startled me. I pulled on the handle and shoved the door open, not wanting to use my telepathy because I knew it would scare her the more.
Once inside the room, I found her in the space between the wardrobe and the wall. She sat on the floor with her knees up, her hands on them and her head resting on her hands. She was practically shaking with fear, but she wasn't making a sound. For some reason, my chest constricted tightly upon seeing her like that. For some reason, it crushed me to know that I was the one she was afraid of.
I took slow steps to her and sat on the floor near her, with my back against the wall. I did not make any attempt to touch her, I just sat there quietly, fiddling with my thumbs. I desperately wanted to tell her how sorry I was but I was afraid my voice would scare her again. I did not want to scare her.
God, what the f**k was happening to me?
We stayed like that for a few minutes and finally, she spoke, but without raising her head.
"Why did you help me? Why did you bring me to your house?'' Her voice was only a little higher than a whisper. "To treat me like this?"
She raised her head and it was then I realized that she had been crying, silently. She did everything silently and tried as much as possible not to make a noise but it did not seem natural rather, it looked like she trained herself to be that way.
"I don't know what came over me" I looked at her contritely, "I apologize"
"You did not just decide to help me, did you? You definitely have a reason for bringing me here. What is it?" She spoke with so much conviction like she had known all along.
"What are you talking about?" I feigned ignorance.
"Your house is in the woods" She mumbled, stating the obvious. She looked deep into my eyes as if trying to read me like a book.
Oh how the tables turned.
I stared back at her with a blank face but I did not expect the next words that came out of her mouth.
"You are a vampire, aren't you?"
